UC Berkeley suspends in-person class, all on-campus events over 150 people.

No 2 just got an email that Vandy has cancelled classes this week. Just went back over the weekend for the end of spring break. Then no in person classes for the last 2 weeks of march. They'll do some sort of online instruction. They reserve the right to keep it going until finals start the last week of April. Maybe I should cancel my trip to Philly and NYC.

That was ugly. The Cal stream people are really hating on the modern defensive shift (which Cal did try in the 9th) and the Bears back their complaints up when a ground ball went between 2nd and short that probably should have been knocked down.

I'm noticing a pattern here and I don't like it.

I was surprised that on the USC stream, they had Cal listed as the No.18 ranked team. That was clearly a mistake, but it was going to be tough for Cal to beat the 8th ranked USC anyhow. It's worse that Cal lost to ASU last week when the ASU program is only in the 2nd year of existence. When it's all over, I expect Cal to be ranked around 50th out fo around 100 schools in the final RPI...baby step forward.

Rams have been holding back a new logo design and uniform revamp to coincide with the opening of the new stadium. I remember reading about this years ago and was kind of surprised that the NFL actually has some rules about how often a team can change their uniforms.

Expand full comment

These are always a tough thing to do (and yeah, I'm speaking from a little experience here). New logos (or "identities") rarely are well-accepted and typically bashed on first presentation. I agree, subjectively speaking, I don't love it for design reasons - not sure what it was trying to accomplish, though.

The NFL does have some very strict regulations around any branding changes (e.g., uniforms, logos, field design, etc.) and typically those things need to go through them, and sometimes even sponsors, for approval depending on what is being changed, for how long, and why. But they are learning from other sports in that more styles typically equates to more revenue.

Cal's "branding" is an entirely different set of problems that they simply cannot get out of their own way about - starting with our name. It has become a bit better in recent years - mostly due to Under Armor's interest in extending beyond revenue sports, but it is still a bit of a challenge. Heck, just referencing Oski can create some fierce debates in the hallowed walls of the Cal Sports administration (trust me!).

Anyway, logos are always a tough thing to change. It takes a lot of money, a lot of discipline, but the results (both financial and consumer support) can have huge dividends.

Ohio State trying to register "The" is a great example from one of the strongest and smartest brands in college sports.

OUR CRUMBLING DEMOCRACY

"Those lies will kill.

Two weeks ago, today, Trump tweeted that “The coronavirus is very much under control in the United States … Stock market is starting to look very good to me!” At that point, there were a small number of cases, but public health experts clearly stated that the number was likely to spike. Nonetheless, Trump accused his critics of perpetrating a “hoax” and said their concerns was overblown. He said that the number of cases — 15 at the time — would soon be “close to zero.”

Today, there are more than 500 cases. There will soon be thousands.

Yet every new infection was viewed through the prism of political self-interest. Every warning was dismissed as media hype. Crucial hours and days ticked by without the urgent action that was needed.

Early on, public health experts and front-line doctors began ringing alarm bells. Testing kits weren’t available even for high-risk cases that were showing matching symptoms to covid-19. Trump responded by meeting with Fox News media performers Diamond and Silk at the White House. “Vote red, R-E-D,” Diamond said. “Remove Every Democrat.” Trump nodded and smiled."

Poetic justice in a germophobe constantly bragging about the stock market being undone by this. But people’s memories are short. Look at China where many are now buying into conspiracy theories about the US planting the virus there to undermine Xi. We see similar patterns here - initial shock of bad event X brings honest criticism of T, but with passage of time Hannity and the like figure out some angle and people go back to their camps believing whatever nonsense is needed to bring them back home

Expand full comment

I don't think so, not for anyone that's not part of 25-30% of the population that are true believers of trump. This is going to be months in the making, and I can already envision the ads of T saying something stupid contrasted with number of deaths. The administration was so utterly clueless at the beginning of this.

They had time, but they wasted it.

Don’t buy into the manufactured consent. They’ve been slow walking results in the states Bernie won for 6 days now and there are valid claims of rigging fuckery in Massachusetts, Maine, Texas and California. If all the delegates were counted Bernie is tied or winning right now.

What we’ve witnessed is the power of corporate media in coordination with the old guard Dem establishment. The drop out/endorsement kabuki last Sunday was a Hail Mary to stop Bernie. And boy did it work.

Joe fucking Biden? Seriously? The man can barely form a complete thought anymore. They’ve been throwing shitlibs against the wall praying for one to stick, Beto, Kamala, Mayo Pete, Bloomberg, and on and on, a different one every few weeks. Super Tuesday was coming and Bernie was going to seal it.

It would be amazing to see the Dems fight for anything like they fought to stop poor people from getting healthcare😂😂😂

We’ll see what happens tomorrow. Polls are looking big ugly for Bernie but he overperformed polls ~20% in 2016 so we’ll see. If Michigan goes the polls are saying it will that will be a big blow, and if they can protect Biden in the next debate (first 1 on 1 debate, already watered down to townhall format to help Biden get through it with canned responses and little confrontation) and nothing changes in the next round (which includes Florida) then it will be over.

This his narrative was bulls*** in 2016 and it's even more so now. Bernie isn't winning because he's failed to expand his base in the last four years. All of the kabuki by the Democratic Party leaders would have meant nothing if more voters supported Bernie Sanders. They don't.

And hey, I voted for Bernie. I wanted him to win. I'm just not about to embrace conspiracy theories about why he's not winning. I don't think that's helpful to the cause. Reflect on what did work and try new ways to reach a broader swath of voters next time.

“The pro-Kremlin newspaper Vzglyad complained that Biden ‘rose from the ashes like a phoenix,’ prevailing ‘in spite of the corruption scandals’ that have long been alleged and cultivated by the Russians—and the Republicans—concerning his son, Hunter, and his own activities in Ukraine,” the Daily Beast reports. “With notable irritation, Vzglyad griped about [Biden’s] primary victories in North Carolina, Oklahoma, Tennessee, and Alabama, claiming that the pro-Biden votes in rural states were secured by ‘rednecks, who shoot skunks for fun, bowl, beat their wives and associate the word ‘socialist’ with the communist threat.’ The newspaper bitterly surmised that through Biden’s anticipated nomination, the U.S. elites won yet another Cold War against socialism.”

Bowling? *gasp*

Expand full comment

Your first couple of paragraphs is conspiracy theory bullshit.

I agree that it's slightly mystifying that we've landed on Biden, whom I see as a needlessly risky and uninspiring choice. But it's fucking over. If you look at the polling, the demographics, the delegate map and election dates, Bernie's got like a 1% chance of pulling off an upset here. He just doesn't have the coalition to do it.

Bernie hasn't overperformed any polls in 2020 so far; Biden has. I don't think a 1 on 1 debate with two septuagenarians is going to accomplish anything we don't already know.

Expand full comment

While it's currently conspiracy theory bs for 2020, wasn't this basically confirmed in 2016?

Expand full comment

I think it's confirmed that some people within the DNC were doing things around the margins to try to make Hillary Clinton the nominee. Scheduling debates on Friday nights when fewer people are likely to be watching, etc. By far the biggest factor was that everyone else just decided to clear out and leave Hillary alone. So you can argue that the lack of a competitive primary plus the general attempts to suppress attention on the race would hurt an insurgent like Bernie and were also a bad approach to take, as it left a lot of people feeling disconnected from the party and its nominee.

That said, it's highly unlikely that even with highly watched debates and high turnout that Bernie would have been able to beat Hillary in a one-on-one race that year. She just had too big an advantage over him in terms of name recognition and support within the party. And THIS year, with a high-turnout competitive primary with many highly-watched debates, all of that DEFINITELY doesn't apply. People had plenty of chances to get a good look at Bernie and everyone else. They didn't pick him.

Sure, the mainstream media outlets and party leaders were tilted against him. It's still entirely possible to win as an outsider insurgent if you have enough popular support (see: Barack Obama and Donald Trump). Bernie didn't have it. Take the L and move on. A lot of Bernie's ideas have already taken root within the party platform, which presumably is the long-term goal here.
