Damonic Williams recommits to Cal after decommitting this morning
One of the wilder Cal recruting stories in recent memory.
And so ends a crazy day of Cal football news with a potential happy ending for Bears fans. After decommitting from Cal this morning, Damonic Williams has decided to repledge to the California Golden Bears and is expected to sign tomorrow morning. Greg Biggins has the report.
It seemed Williams had a great official visit to TCU this past weekend, and former Cal head coach/current TCU head coach Sonny Dykes had him all ready to be a Horned Frog tomorrow for Early Signing Day.
“I had a great visit, I really loved it out there,” Williams said. “I liked the all around fit for me on and off the field. TCU is a great academic fit as well for what I want to do.
However, it appears the family (and likely the last-minute efforts of defensive line coach Andrew Browning and the Cal coaching staff) convinced him that Cal was the right place to be. A meeting of the Williamses prompted the change of heart and Damonic is now ready to sign with California tomorrow.
"We had a good family meeting and I decided to go with my gut and stick with Cal," Williams said. "I'm going to sign with Cal tomorrow, Cal is home for me and where I feel I belong.
"You can't beat that degree from Cal and I love the coaching staff. I like the defense, they play multiple fronts, 3-4 and 4-3 depending on who they're playing. It has been a crazy 48 hours for me, I'm pretty exhausted right now but I'm excited and going to go out and celebrate with my family now."
At 6-2, 325 pounds, Williams is currently ranked as the 76th best defensive lineman by 247Sports Composite, and the 41st best prospect in the state of California. He will provide Cal with much needed defensive tackle depth.
The Cal coaching staff probably can’t breathe easy until that letter of intent is in the door tomorrow though.
What a day. And another wild day is expected to follow.
