Do you name your car(s)?

My current car is called "Willow" because her navigation software voice is so wooden.

The family has taken to naming the trucks, so we have Little Red, Big Red, and The Gray Whale.

We did this a very long time ago for a van (a 1970 Chevy Sportsman van), but it wasn't terribly imaginative.

The license plate for the van was ZOT 880, so the van became known as "The Zot". We went many places in California in that van. In 1975, we made a cross-country trip in that van when we moved from Berkeley to Hunterdon County, New Jersey.

Kind of.

I do not, but my brother does. He has a Volvo named Sven, and they have an Eddie Bauer Explorer named, naturally, Eddie.

SCOTUS agrees to hear Trump's eligibility on 14th amendment - priming half the country to scream that SCOTUS is a bunch of partisan hacks no matter the outcome.

I am tempted to agree with the strategy minded folks who say we should just let him on the ballot because otherwise it plays into his whole persecution thing. But bigger picture, I think it would be beneficial to have a clear rule that your ass is DQ’d forever if you try to upend the democratic process and foment a coup. I’m a little weary of everything being viewed in terms of how it plays in the next election. We are being too short sighted

Expand full comment

Your last sentence is why I think that Newsom and others are being supreme cowards when it comes to the issue of DQing Trump from the California primary ballot. That also goes for any other state that is hiding behind the ballot as the way in which to defeat Trump.

If you're not going to use the tools left to you by previous generations, then you are committing political malpractice, plain and simple.

Expand full comment

But at this juncture, why not wait to see how the SCOTUS rules? Seems like the better, calculated, political move, no?

Expand full comment

Because I don't want SCOTUS to take their sweet time in ruling. This is a constitutional issue. Setting the tone matters.

Expand full comment

They have set it for oral argument on 2/8. It is being expedited. Yes it is a constitutional issue, and that aspect will be addressed despite California declining to remove Trump. There is also major political calculation involved. I don't feel passionately about the position that California takes either way as there is clearly a split in how to proceed among those who do not want to see Trump win in '24.

Assuming that is the outcome of the SCOTUS review, which is not at all a guarantee. And, unfortunately, this next election IS the big picture when it comes to our democracy.

Yeah the difficulty is the fact finding aspect of it - not something they normally do

Lenox Hill (Netflix, WB 17/19). An over-the-shoulder documentary in a Manhattan hospital that follows a neurosurgeon at the top of his game, an ER who is the first line of medical treatment for the city's underinsured, and an OB-GYN. A fascinating look into their world without trying too hard to manufacture drama because their daily jobs and themes surrounding them speak for themselves. I thought this was going to be a standard mediocre Netflix production, but sucked me in.

I’ve stuck with Comcast for the last decade partially because it had PAC-12 Networks and DirecTV did not. So… what provider has the best coverage of the ACC? In spite of college sports selling out, I plan to keep watching Cal football and basketball for the same reason I always have – the hope of that one magic season when the ball bounces the right way, and we have a chance to do something special.

Once the Pac-12 college basketball season is over, I think I'm switching to YouTube TV. They have basically all the college sports networks besides Pac-12.

The signs were there and Michigan stole out of the CFB with a win over Washington thanks to big plays 34-13

Washington failed to execute their game. Had the Huskies done that, they might have defeated Michigan.

Drops and penalties were killers for the Huskies.

Expand full comment

I think the fact that Michigan was the better team was the most important factor in the outcome.

Expand full comment

Hence why I wrote, "might have defeated Michigan."

Clearly, Michigan was the better team. Washington needed Penix and his receivers to be on their A game. They weren't.

Expand full comment

didn't help either that a couple of key UW players including Penix seemed to be playing hurt. You need the plays at the margins of ability to have a shot against a slightly better team, and UW wasn't getting those.

I also think there's something to the way that Spencer Hall characterized the Michigan team of the last few years, which is that it was first and foremost designed to beat the absolute shit out of Ohio State, a team with more reliance on very skilled QBs and WRs rather than size. That's a good starting point for taking on a dented Washington.

Expand full comment

A bunch of 6th year players and another bunch of 5th year players who did not leave Michigan early for the NFL certainly helped. Washington had quite a few too, and talent with experience is why no one else could beat either of them.

Expand full comment

Yeah just way better on the line on both sides. That tackle on UW that got called for holding a few times was really getting beat pretty badly

Jan 9·edited Jan 9

Yeah, there's a lot of focus on Penix having a rough game but IMO the problem was mostly up front. Every QB will look bad if his OL is constantly getting beat.

Expand full comment

There was one overhead shot of him when the ball gets snapped and everyone moves but him. Almost tik-tok quality humor if it weren’t so tragic for the Huskies.

I noticed women’s hoops in “others getting votes” in this week’s poll. Tough road to travel with four PAC teams in the top 10.

Expand full comment

Because the Bears swept the Washington schools a 6th or 7th place finish with a .500 conference record now seems within reach. That should get Cal into the tourney. But they can't afford a stumble and probably need to pull off an upset. Not going to be easy but it's doable.
