DBD stats (Adventures in AI coding continued)

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

clear decline in commenting activity over the last year. i am sure some of the data is suspect and i havent fully checked it all (used AI to code it up)

I wonder if the fortunes of the football team will have an impact on those numbers.

During the Tedford heyday, the DBD (when it was on SB Nation) had a period where comments often exceeded 1,000 in a day. The number of comments in one DBD have dropped off precipitously since then.

MoriBear's avatar

I started following DBD about five years ago. Not only about 3x the comments then vs now, but many many more commenters. Like was typically 20 to 25 folks. Now 5 to 10.

That match others’ sense?

heyalumnigo's avatar

Unfortunately it has been dwindling. The switch from sbnation to substack changed the commenting system and it isn't as good for mobile so that was some of it. Changing job function and being more busy was some of it. We're just trying to keep it going. If you have an idea on how to bring the numbers up let us know.

to be clear, this wasn't a criticism of you or HSB or SBBear or...I'm amazed at the effort that's needed to keep this going day after day!

As a semi-noob and as a "long-time listener, first-time caller", I don't have any thoughts on how to bring the numbers back up. I've just noticed that a lot of folks who'd be good for a handful of comments every other day aren't around anymore.

Figured it might be folks getting older, busier, having life changes, etc. Plus Cal sports not having been great (altho getting better, hopefully!). I see enthusiasm there increasing...maybe it'll bleed over into here?

I think once the portal dies down, I may ask Rob to put it on the front page, especially on the slow days. We tried it one or twice last week but there are just so many portal articles we don't want to go in front of those.

just leftover Nepali takeout from yesterday. we had some technician in the house until 230p or so and that messed up my idea of exploring some new place in town.

also, it is only 15 deg F so maybe it was fine that i didnt walk around all over town today.

and then there DBD dinner.

This our local fish place. You can only get Orange perch currently from lake Champlain.

Cash only. 2 guys sit around all day filleting what other people catch and sell. i got a pound of fish for dinner. breaded and fried is apparently the way to go.

That looks awesome. I think the crab boats can how sell at Fishermans wharf. The season got delayed this year.

Running to Costco so doing the hot dog and coke. I've tried the calzone which is fine, but not $7 fine. I do miss the polish dogs nad the combo pizzas. The only other food thing I've had is a few bits of the Chicken bake. I think we did split a cheeseburger once to just try it out.

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

Costco is not so close to you right?

maybe you need to go anyways ..

heyalumnigo's avatar

On Monument in Concord. Only like 15 miles. I was going with No 3 to get stuff anyways. When I worked in Pleasanton, we would go at least once a week to the one in Livermore/Pleasanton border and get a dog and samples.

The Pitt (HBO Max) - I'm halfway through the first episode and it's so good. Looks like a cross between ER and 24. I think I read it's the most realistic hospital show. Maybe doctors that have read it can confirm.

Dodgers sign Kyle Tucker under a ridiculous 4-year $240m deal (not including another 110% luxury tax). MLB is indeed the unfair game.

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

HAG and sons are not complaining. feels like a modern-day Yankees dynasty.

to be fair, i am not a hater. a lot goes into winning aside from just players and money. and given that the Dodgers are on a roll they might as well pile up the WS wins while they can.

everyone knows that those times dont last forever and the dry spells can last decades.

heyalumnigo's avatar

No 2 dosen't want him. 60/year is an overpay, but it isn't my money. I'm waiting to hear what the deferrals are.

Sources: Mets, Bo Bichette agree to 3-year, $126M contract

https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/47631398/sources-mets-bo-bichette-agree-3-year-126m-contract

Infielder Bo Bichette and the New York Mets are in agreement on a three-year, $126 million contract, sources confirmed to ESPN on Friday.

The deal, which is pending a physical, includes opt-outs after the first and second seasons and no deferrals, sources said.

heyalumnigo's avatar

Seems like a panic buy after missing out on Tucker. I think it's a massive overpay.

Warriors beat Knicks on some balanced scoring.

i watched the first half. Ws fell behind early, came back in 2nd, and took a slim lead into halftime.

looked like a good game

Really amazing to me that baseball contracts can be so big. As far as I can tell, baseball is losing popularity, its fan base is ancient. Will be interesting to see what happens to the A’s over the next few years. Sport needs a salary cap to give smaller market teams a better chance, and needs to find a way to get kids interested in baseball.

heyalumnigo's avatar

A salary floor will need to go with a salary cap. No way teams should be taking the competitive payout and pocketing all of it.

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

yes i am perplexed by this too.

that being said, in increasing order of where there are kids in the audience ..

- hockey

- football

- basketball

- baseball

it is still an amazing place to take your kids and you see plenty of kid oriented entertainment.

sadly you can barely buy cotton candy or Cracker Jacks anymore.

probably the same for pct of women (unverified claim)

This iconic Bay Area Taco Bell, one of the last of its kind, to close after almost 60 years

It's one of the last Taco Bells housed in the chain's original mission-style buildings.

https://www.ktvu.com/news/iconic-bay-area-taco-bell-one-last-its-kind-close-after-almost-60-years

i have been here (the one in Lafayette) a bunch of times. been to the one in Moraga a lot more

SGBear's avatar

The Lafayette one had a bell in the appropriate space. The thieve(s) found out that the bell was made of plastic. After a while, that spot bricked in the bell spot. In the photo, there is the modern bell logo covering the bricked over area. I may or may not have gone to high school with some of the vandal(s).

... to the unknown.

Everyone will eventually pass through at least one portal to the unknown. With advancing age, the sense of that portal becomes a little more real, especially as more of one's world vanishes: people, places, things.

Time to rewatch "The Good Place"

Wiata78's avatar

I think of my life as having something like 4 or 5 sub-lifetimes.

Wiata78's avatar

Why does On3 have us with only three 4star transfers incoming, but

24/7 says we have five?

Strut’88's avatar

Yeah, there are discrepancies. I wonder if one is only going by high school recruiting stars.
