A quirky eating habit

SGBear's avatar

In general, my wife doesn't like her food to touch each other.

Berkelium97's avatar

My kid just started going through a rather extreme version of a phase like that. To test it I recently made her a quesadilla for lunch--she didn't touch it. The next day, I gave her a tortilla and shredded cheese and she devoured it. Same thing happened the other night: she loves rice, cilantro, and limes but had no interest in the cilantro lime rice we made. But she's only 2, so she'll probably grow out of it soon.

O.Overall's avatar

My kids’ peak pickiness was around ages 2-3. I think they learn that they have the ability to say no and just kind of go nuts with it

Cugel's avatar

In my mind, that's kind of a problem.

O.Overall's avatar

School humbles all eccentricities eventually. As my kids’ pediatrician used to repeat like a mantra, “it’s a phase”

TheBuckeyeBear's avatar

You think people grow out of their weirdo phases, but a lot of us just get weirder

That's the running joke in the house lately: she's an enthusiast for deconstructed meals.

TheBuckeyeBear's avatar

A friend is the opposite; I remember him getting the Grand Slam at Denny's and cutting everything up and mixing it together!

His mom said that, when he was little, he didn't want his food to touch, though.

FiatSlug's avatar

I find this interesting. Can you say why?

SGBear's avatar

A chaotic childhood caused by a messy divorce that forced a child to become precocious in all elements of her life. This precociousness has manifested in a drive to manage all elements of her life. On the positive side, she's supremely organized and detail oriented. On the negative side, even having a non-malevolent control freak around takes a lot of patience and thick skin.

FiatSlug's avatar

Thanks. I now have some new insight into myself.

Cugel's avatar

MMMmmmMMmmm. The rice and spicy and rich pork and various bell peppers and chilies in the chili verde con cerdo over rice with a sprinkle of cheese over it after it's been heated. 5 hours for the sauce basis, the meat chunks and the other veggie items for texture added at 2 - so so good; I've never had a copy of this ANYWHERE that was as good.

I am so lucky.

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

I don't like to eat on a first date...

Oski Disciple's avatar

I cannot eat while wearing glasses.

SGBear's avatar

What don't you mess with?

Berkelium97's avatar

My wife's Mini Cooper. I enjoy different types of car/motorcycle/bicycle maintenance, but that car has the world's smallest engine bay and everything is computer-controlled and thus requires some proprietary tool from BMW to reset. For example, the battery was recently in need of replacement. In my car? Simple: take out the old one and pop in the new one and it's done. Her car? Uninstall the old one, install the new one, and then program the new one to the car so that it's compatible with its "intelligent charging system." Thankfully we have a great, reasonably priced local shop specializing in German cars, so I let them handle all its silly quirks.

GoldenSD81's avatar

My wife had a mini Cooper and I was very happy when we finally got rid of it.

Fun car to drive but like you said, maintenance on it was tough and everything required a mechanic.

Oski Disciple's avatar

Oski Disciple's avatar

FiatSlug's avatar

Local politics. In my case, that means Berkeley politics, which is largely dysfunctional, corrupt, and an effing blood sport.

sycasey's avatar

I feel similarly about local Oakland public school politics. I dipped my foot in near the end of the pandemic when I wanted to try to get my 1st grader back to school and the district was taking forever. It's all such a mess.

BentPawn(Don)'s avatar

Five episodes in to Slow Horses. Gary Oldman is a treasure. He can pass gas in my vicinity at any time.

heyalumnigo's avatar

I thought this season was great. Can't wait for the next one.

O.Overall's avatar

S2 was amazing, agree!

MoriBear's avatar

When the second Planet of the Apes movie came out, the missus and I got to see the world premiere at the Palace of Fine Arts. With cast (including Andy Serkis) and director.

Mr. Oldman was there. I felt bad being in the same room as him because the reaction to the film was so tepid. Not his finest moment (PotA, not being at PoFA).

SGBear's avatar

Only Murders in the Building S2 (17/19, Hulu WB). Thoroughly entertaining follow-up season that didn't get lazy with its writing. Campy, well-written, and has a stellar supporting cast. Would definitely bang.

Oski Disciple's avatar

Yup. And the three co-stars shine.

O.Overall's avatar

Selena Gomez works surprisingly well w the two old dudes. Just a top notch effort on every level - concept, writing, acting, directing. I think this and Lasso are in a league of their own in overall quality of current shows

sycasey's avatar

I mostly knew Selena Gomez as a singer (and even then, not all that well), but I was surprised at how well she embodies an "old soul" kind of young person. She fits right in without being grossly sexualized or whatever.

O.Overall's avatar

Yes, agree. I think a lot of that is owing to her voice, which is a bit surprising as it does not seem to match how she looks, and also conveys a certain kind of weariness very well

Started Kaleidoscope on Netflix, a limited series caper show that can be watched in any order. All episodes are named after colors, and I’ve decided to watch them in the ROYGBIV sequence, minus the I, and plus White and Pink. The show itself is ok so far bc of how spread out the timeline is for the eps I’ve watched so far. I’ve made it through ROY so far 14/19 WPB, but may amend depending on how the remaining eps play out

Scootie's avatar

Oh come on, you'd bang any 14/19. Don't pretend you have super high standards.

MoriBear's avatar

Watched The Meal last night. Had meant to only watch half – it was late – but was so good, that I just kept going. And then watched the 13-min "about" video afterwards. Was not what I was expecting.

Cugel's avatar

Finished the whole 18 episodes of Freaks & Geeks (from 1999-2000) set in 1979-80 last night, such a really fun show.

Highly recommended.

O.Overall's avatar

So many actors that went on to have big careers!

O.Overall's avatar

I just finished S1 of Peripheral - quite enjoyed it, maybe 15/19 or so if I understand that scale. I have never read William Gibson, may do so now as I think some of the concepts are probably better explored in the format of a novel

MoriBear's avatar

I watched it. the last few eps were just for the completionist in me. I'd lost interest in the overall arc.

Oski Disciple's avatar

Loot on Apple TV. Late to the party on this one. The missus and I are surprised by how much we like it. Hard to go wrong with Maya Rudolph (a national treasure).

GoldenSD81's avatar

My wife and I tried this when it first came out and we didn’t like it that much. Stopped watching after 2 episodes.

MoriBear's avatar

got bad reviews. but I liked it. hit its stride about halfway thru.

the "gazillionairre being buds with proletariat" wasn't believable, but hey. it's tv

Peetyjay's avatar

Started S-2 of White Lotus last night. We had some healthy discussion of this show last week. Despite some of my criticism, I do find it binge worthy, the acting and cast are pretty amazing. I do like the social commentary each character embodies, even if I did find some of the themes in S1 overdone.

Berkelium97's avatar

I think S2 leaned more heavily on character development and conflict development and was less heavy-handed with the satire, and I think it was better for it.

O.Overall's avatar

Yes agree, and to the comment of some folks, there are more likeable characters that you are pulling for - eg the Stanford kid and the two local girls.

Peetyjay's avatar

Let this be the last time anyone ever utters on WFC they are pulling for a "Stanford kid."

GlueAndBold's avatar

Maybe it's the Cal bias but I kept expecting the Stanford kid to be a shit due to some of the things he said to Portia.

GoldenSD81's avatar

Also, the staff/help came out ahead this season compared to the first season.

O.Overall's avatar

Yes the hotel manager was also more likeable but still I did enjoy the hotel manager character from S1 also even though he was not likeable

Peetyjay's avatar

A saving element of S1 is that despite being either being pathetic or downright unlikable, the characters are entertaining, particularly the hotel manager from S1.

GoldenSD81's avatar

I agree. I think S2 was better than S1.

MoriBear's avatar

I quit about 3 eps in and felt bad that I watched that much (too many eps/too ugh for the completionist in me to plow thru)

Cugel's avatar

We watched S-1, finished episode 4 last night, I will say we quite enjoy it, but I suppose I would say we don't take it seriously. Just a goofy fun show.

O.Overall's avatar

Btw I have never really considered going to Sicily but it looks amazing!

Scootie's avatar

It is set in, BY FAR, the nicest part of Sicily, which is very nice. The western part of the island is a lot of scrub and desert-y landscape, without the cactus (so maybe dust bowl?).

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

Treason, on Netflix. Five episode limited Brit series starring the guy who played Daredevil on the TV, the woman from 007's Quantum of Solace, and Rob Stark's wife from GoT.

Pretty good. I enjoy the Brit shows...they're usually shorter, stylish, and move quickly.

Scootie's avatar

One thing I like about British shows, which took a lot of adjusting when I first moved there, is that they're not afraid to do the Bad Thing.

I remember watching the first season of Spooks (I think maybe it was Spies here?) and Tom Wambsgans's (the hero spook) wife was trapped and some bad guys were going to blow up her house, and I said to my friend, I wonder how he'll rescue her? And he said, Oh Scootie, you're not used to British shows yet and next thing I knew, BOOM, no more wife, end of season. OH.

heyalumnigo's avatar

*Spoiler* Reminds me of the first season of 24 and Jack Bauer's wife is killed by Nina. I figured for sure he'd rescue his wife.

DC Trojan's avatar

it was shown as MI-5 here, and yeah, they were not shy about bumping off main characters

MoriBear's avatar

Slow Horses also.

I remember watching Star Wars (age 11) and thinking that [spolier alert] Luke died in the garbage area when pulled into the muck by the snake thing. I was too young to know that stuff like that didn't happen. Which is why [spoiler alert] Lando lived in RotJ.

Cugel's avatar

This is 100% correct - can't remember the name - a show after 9/11, two spies & his wife gets her whole face gets completely burned in oil, and is dead.

US shows as a whole have never done this, and my wife hated this idea. We stopped watching.

DC Trojan's avatar

I think that was also MI-5 / Spooks - a very jarring episode (they end up assassinating the leader of the far-right group who was responsible for the fried face)

MoriBear's avatar

will have to watch this
