So do I have this right? Next Monday is the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the inauguration and the night of the national title game in college football. January 20th is doing some heavy lifting this year.

1/20 is also National Penguin Day.

Fitting as the future feels like it will reflect the series, "the Penguin."

Forgotten Lyrics:

State of Utah may want to meditate on the first stanza as they have filed a lawsuit claiming all land held by BLM should be turned over to the state.

There was a big high wall there that tried to stop me.

The sign was painted, said ‘Private Property.’

But on the backside, it didn’t say nothing.

This land was made for you and me.

One bright sunny morning in the shadow of the steeple,

By the relief office I saw my people.

As they stood hungry,

I stood there wondering if God blessed America for me.

I have no faith in Justin Herbert. Bolts lose to the Texans 32-12. Throws 4 INTs, though one was on the receiver and one was a hail mary.

Expand full comment

I have faith. Watching him play his last game at Cal reminded me so much of Rodgers' play Cal - regularly spun the ball through porthole-sized windows to receivers. I think he'll be ok, usually have to perform badly to eventually rise to the top. Of the two int's we agree he's responsible for, I think one high one was trying to get the ball over a lineman, a common problem.

Expand full comment

I think he is fine, and the Chargers are too. My view is there is enough other that needs worked on, and if progress is made in those areas, Herbert will be fine, and not asked as much to be superman.

Bought tix to Cal MBB at GA Tech on 2/15-- lots of great seats left at decent prices as it is Presidents Day Weekend and lots of people here are out of town then. You can even find a ticket for $7 (pre-fees of course), and "nosebleeds" at McCamish aren't bad. Cal fans are definitely buying tix as seats behind the visitors bench were double the stubhub price as the seats behind the Yellow Jacket bench.

Week to week? Daily.

The bald-face grifting. The culture warfare. MAGA has built its foundation about stoking fears about THEM doing the THINGS to YOU and YOUR WAY OF LIFE. It'll be interesting - from a troll's perspective - to see how they can actually govern when they have a majority of House, Senate, Executive, and Judiciary branches. I predict a power struggle will immediately start tearing them apart and then they will implode when nobody can follow in Trump's ketchup-stained footsteps.

Impossible to choose the most stunning stat from the game. Perhaps the ten second half points for the Mustangs. Maybe being blanked in the third. How about The Mustangs going 5-for-44 from the field in the final 31 minutes? Maybe my favorite is that they didn't make a two-point bucket after the first quarter.

Some stat nuggets from Pitt's record-tying comeback:

SMU shot 2-for-28 (7%) in the second half.

Pittsburgh started 0-for-10 and 2-for-20 from the field.

SMU was 10-for-18 from the field in the game's first nine minutes. The Mustangs were 5-for-44 from the field in the final 31 minutes.

SMU missed its final 21 shots from 2-point range. The Mustangs didn't have a 2-point make in the final three quarters; all five of their made baskets in the final three quarters were from beyond the 3-point arc.

Pitt made 16 of its final 24 shots.

SMU's Nya Robertson had 21 points in the first half, then just two in the second half. The only Mustangs player with a field goal in the second half was Zanai Jones; she was 2-for-10 in that span, and her teammates combined to shoot 0-for-18 in the final two quarters.
