going to this event in NYC for the Bancroft Library on Monday that i forgot i RSVP'ed for ..

i have not been to a "soiree" in quite some time!

We are delighted that you are able to join us on Monday, January 23rd at 5:30PM for a cocktail reception at the Knickerbocker Club, located at Fifth Avenue at 62nd Street. This soiree, hosted by Gifford Combs, will be a wonderful opportunity to meet Kate Donovan, the new Director of The Bancroft Library and Associate University Librarian for Special Collections at UC Berkeley, as well as hear Library priorities from University Librarian Jeff MacKie-Mason.

The Knickerbocker has a few club rules:

Dress code is strictly observed. Gentlemen are required to wear jackets and ties at all times. Appropriate attire for ladies is NYC business attire, dresses, skirts, and dressy or business pant suits.

Then you can still wear jeans so long as you have a blazer and a tie.

This week I got tickets to one of the 4 tapings of the last season of Whose Line is it Anyways tomorrow night. No 3 was going to but he has too much work. My mom is coming down to LA with me since my sister is having a Lunar New Year party tonight. Anyone that wants to go to the taping I've got an extra ticket.

Or aluminium, if you want to mispronounce it per yesterday's DBD topic

heyalumnigo's avatar

I had a British Materials Science prof that pronounced it that way. I didn't really know any Brits before then so I didn't know it was pronounced that way.

DC Trojan's avatar

it's not mispronouncing if you're following the spelling*. I always wondered why there was the discrepancy between aluminium or aluminum when you don't see something similar with say chromium.

*A risky proposition to make with a lot of spelling in English variants, to be sure

FiatSlug's avatar

I hear the British pronunciation as "AL-oo-min-yum". The first time I heard it, I was taken aback by the sound. It's somewhat akin to the British pronunciation of "schedule", which sounds like "SHED-yoo-ul".

Another Brit pronunciation that is rather different - "jaguar" as "JAG-yoo-arr". I first noticed that pronunciation in an ad for Jaguar cars.

Scootie's avatar

Aluminium is pronounced AL-oo-min-i-um. The second i is its own full syllable.

GoldenSD81's avatar

Yeah, first time I heard aluminum pronounced like that was from my friend at Cal who is originally from South Africa. I was also taken aback by it.

Cugel's avatar

I don't think that's "wrong"; just British.

GoldenSD81's avatar

This was my thought as well and one of the words I purposefully mispronounce or pronounce correctly depending on how you feel about it’s pronunciation.

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

correct me if i am wrong ..

i was under the impression that the AL content of regular aluminum foil has such little AL that it actually cant be recycled. the heavy duty stuff on the other hand is mostly AL.

SGBear's avatar

I don't think that's true. All aluminum foil is over 90% aluminum with the balance being iron and silicon for strength so it isn't so brittle. The difference between heavy duty aluminum foil and regular is the quality of the rollers. Inferior rollers can't roll it very thin, so its products are marketed as heavy duty.

FiatSlug's avatar

I doubt that is true. Advice on recycling aluminum foil is that you ball up several pieces together. Balls of foil are easier to pick out of the waste stream since aluminum is not attracted to magnets.

Peetyjay's avatar

Sometime in the 90s I read about a suspected link between aluminum and alzheimer's. I stopped using aluminum pots and stopped using all underarm deodorant and have never gone back.

This past summer I was enjoying hazy and juicy IPAs. But now I'm happily enjoying heavy beer season (stouts, barrel-aged ales, etc.) for as long as I can

Cugel's avatar

I'm still enjoying some sort of wine.

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

i am enjoying the hazy, West Coast, East Coast, New England style versions these days.

there seem to be an infinite variety of them wherever you go ..

We were renovating our offices a few years ago and when it was time to move back into the renovated floor, this one coworker wanted to switch offices with me. I jokingly said “of course… and I drink Racer 5 btw” And the next day there was 6 pack of Racer 5 on my chair!

GoldenSD81's avatar

I enjoy a nice hazy year round and tend to switch to session IPAs in the summer.

Frank, Franklin, or other similar name

Franklin TN. 5 acres, Mansion + large guest home. Last remodeled in 1997. Only $1.5m. I wonder why it's so cheap.

CruzinBears's avatar

So did they just not have fire insurance? Or did the previous owners take the money and are selling without repairing?

goldenone's avatar

Who wants to live in Franklin, TN?

SGBear's avatar

Franklin is arguably the nicest Nashville suburb. I've considered living there.

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

i almost took a job based there. cant exactly remember the company, but they were defense contractors doing ML algorithms

it was right off the main highway as you head south of Nashville.

Tangtpt's avatar

Apparently my sister and brother-in-law...they just moved there this past weekend after moving out of Los Angeles.

Frankly, I'm surprised nobody noticed/commented that Paddington Bear is the middle of the main picture.

DC Trojan's avatar

I wasn't looking that closely, I do like that account on Twitter

GoldenSD81's avatar

I enjoyed the first two. 3 and 4 dragged a bit and weren’t as good. I wonder if the prequel will be any good.

Hunger Games was much better than the Divergent series.

Maze Runner had potential but it just got too complicated.

YA stuff just falls apart the further a series continues.

DC Trojan's avatar

I think the challenge for some of these authors is that they have one book that's a hit and then the pressure is on to deliver, and they aren't really ready. The Hunger Games series had a slight drop from the first to the second book, and then a bigger drop to the third (amplified by the 3rd & 4th films), whereas the Divergent series was "decent" to "okay" to "ah okay we've just given up on anything other than the Christ metaphor," but with a lot of frottage as the unifying theme between the three.

RIP David Crosby.

glad to see that "Almost Cut My Hair" made the list of 15 essential songs

Still love DEVO. Listening to a live version at Dec 1978 in England - such a solid recording.

They still put on a great live show. I’ve seen them twice in the last 20 years or so

OUR CRUMBLING DEMOCRACY

Berkelium97's avatar

Maryland inaugurated Wes Moore as its new governor this week. This is his first time in elected office, but he has the vision, dedication, and leadership to be a strong presidential candidate in the future. I would not be surprised if he runs in '28 or '32

Democrats refuse to negotiate on debt ceiling, trying to deflect cuts back onto GOP. It's a dangerous game of chicken.

https://thehill.com/homenews/administration/3820248-why-the-white-house-is-refusing-to-negotiate-on-the-debt-ceiling/

FiatSlug's avatar

You call it a game of chicken. I call the Democrats' strategy being the adult in the room. Clearly the House GOP is the irresponsible party here. Or, if you prefer, the party willing to burn down the house just because.

Mitch McConnell has already signaled that this gambit by House GOP won't work as he is quoted as saying, "No, I would not be concerned about a financial crisis" from the same article. That tells me that McConnell knows where this is going and it signals that cooler heads in the GOP intend not to let this veer into disaster.

Bad (House GOP) governance is bad. In this case, potentially disastrous.

GoldenSD81's avatar

Yeah, by negotiating with the House GOP and giving into their demands it would only further embolden the radical and crazy GOP members to be even more crazy and radical the next time the debt ceiling needs to be raised.

GoldenSD81's avatar

You don’t negotiate with terrorist.

Judge dismisses Peter Navarro move to dismiss his contempt of Congress case because his "executive privilege" assertion wasn't formally granted and you can't just wish it into existence like Trump's phony declassification assertions.

George Santos - the 2022 BAFTA award winner for best visual effects - denied performing as a drag queen in Brazil. The woman who broke the story was like... "yeah, I found one of your family friends who you used to hang out with and she had the videos to prove it".

https://thehandbasket.substack.com/p/the-daily-santos-vol-7

DC Trojan's avatar

to be honest I don't really care all that much if he was a drag queen in Brazil, it's funny by contrast to the dreadful rhetoric from the further right, but not really that big a deal. There's something off-putting about notional liberals leaning in to those kind of culture war complaints, like the people getting all judgmental about the rumors that Representative Boebert was a sex worker (if she was, so what?)

Peetyjay's avatar

This dude's level of deceit is rising to a diagnosable level. Maybe borderline personality disorder? Something else?

GoldenSD81's avatar

Being a conservative and GOP is a personality disorder.

Judge sees through TFG's frivolous lawsuit against Hillary Clinton. He and his lawyer Alina Habba are fined $937,989.39 because of it.

https://www.cnbc.com/2023/01/20/trump-and-lawyers-sanctioned-almost-1-million-for-frivolous-lawsuit-against-hillary-clinton.html

heyalumnigo's avatar

And he ended up dropping his suit against New York Attorney General Letitia James since the same judge was going to hear that case and strongly intimated the same outcome.

FiatSlug's avatar

That seems like an oddly specific amount. Why not just $940,000?

clapdoc's avatar

because TFG does not believe that 0 is a real number.

heyalumnigo's avatar

At the end of the game when Curry had Horford 1 on 1 I thought for sure he would drive and maybe try to draw a foul. He probably should have instead of putting up the ugly contested 3.

Given the rumored $13 million dollar NIL for Rashada that fell apart, not sure if we post under this thread or elsewhere. Interestingly, Cal keeps coming up as a potential landing spot.

Berkelium97's avatar

I don't think Cal can come anywhere close to that NIL, but I'm sure someone can toss him a Top Dog gift card or two.

heyalumnigo's avatar

I'll pitch in some money for a Top Dog GC.

ELSEWHERE IN COLLEGE

g.oso's avatar

And yet he was deemed fit to act as a offensive consultant at Cal this past season…

goldenone's avatar

Good that we don't play Colorado this season. It will be interesting to see if this celebrity coach can turn the program around.

Berkelium97's avatar

The more time passes, the more I grow deeply skeptical of that program. I'm getting strong used care salesman vibes from Sanders.

Peetyjay's avatar

Absolutely. Shaping up to be like a TAM 2021 class where the expectations are through the roof, but the locker room becomes unmanageable because of fit, personality, and NIL money.

heyalumnigo's avatar

I'm waiting for the Level 1 recruiting violations in a few years.

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

Those don’t really exist anymore in the NIL era, unless you’re incompetent…if anything, Cal will likely be hit with them before the guys that know how to cheat!

heyalumnigo's avatar

That would be just like Cal. A Todd Bozeman type f-up.

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

It was a brilliant move, actually. I mean, he's all but said he wants to be in the South, either ACC or SEC...

Colorado was SO bad, say they beat Nebraska, Colorado St., Stanford and U of A at home to go 4-8, which is very doable with Shedeur and that roster, even with just a little coaching....then say in year two, they're 6-6 and take our f-ing Sun Bowl bid...he'll be a big name, and he's gone to Mississippi State or Georgia Tech.

ak_A_bear's avatar

We will see once the CU-car pulls out of the lot and hits the road.

goldenone's avatar

Hopefully Auburn will still be struggling next season. To be fair, SEC teams typically schedule payday patsies in OOC to pad their records, not Power 5 juggernauts like Cal.
