i am still a little perplexed by this. at first it wasnt clear if there were 2 versions of Excel, desktop and online. maybe things have converged and everything is thru an online subscription these days.

once upon a time (when i worked in finnace) i was a near Excel expert in all things. not the case anymore. i just use Google sheets to do simple things like make a line chart or add numbers

I think starting a few years ago they went to the yearly sub model. Not sure if it's even possible anymore to buy the one time charge version anymore. I'd still rather have the desktopp app rather than the online version. Can't work offline using the online version.

I don't the one-time charge version is available anymore. Subscriptions offer far more profit for software companies, especially Big Tech companies like Microsoft.

At a minimum, your subscribers are funding your R&D and bringing new products to the market. I'm sure there's plenty of additional profit in it, too.

There are multiple versions of almost all of the MS Suite, even Copilot. And while similar, there are differences, sometimes key ones. Often maddening ones, especially if you are an engineer/technician, work in the medical field, etc., where the consequence of mistakes and inconsistencies aren't just inconvenient, it causes things to blow up/break/burn down, and gets people hurt or killed.

I think 365 is the Whole Foods organic in-house brand.

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

I was there yesterday and didn't think to look that closely. A lot things are organic

heyalumnigo's avatar

I didn't realize it was organic. I guess I just had seen 365. Do they have a non-orgranic in house brand?

Trump then threatened on Monday to put a 200% import tariff on France's wines after its leader, Emmanuel Macron, turned down the US president's invitation to join his "Board of Peace."

so many great new things!

over the weekend we got even more belligerent towards Greenland and Europe. new 10 pct tariffs.

If those nations do not relent, he (Trump) added, the rate will increase to 25 percent on June 1, “until such time as a Deal is reached for the Complete and Total purchase of Greenland.”

dcblue's avatar

At least there he was talking purchase not military takeover. Not that Greenland, Denmark, or any others are in favor of purchase. And not that military takeover doesn’t come up again depending on his mood.

maybe if the Nobel committee gave him an honorary peace prize he would be nicer??!!

i am 100% sure not ..

2nd year Macklin Celebrini is looking so good right now. The No 1 draft pick in the 2024 NHL entry draft. His dad is the head trainer for the Warriors.

How Macklin Celebrini entered the MVP conversation as a one-man show

https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6983682/2026/01/20/macklin-celebrini-nhl-hart-mvp-teammates/

If hockey is the ultimate team game as is so often suggested, Macklin Celebrini is throwing that concept on its side, breaking its ankles with a sick deke and blasting by it to lead the San Jose Sharks to another shocking victory.

Celebrini has become hockey’s ultimate one-man show, a personal wrecking ball that’s carried an otherwise underwhelming Sharks team to shocking heights: A playoff spot. No player is doing this much with this little, a fact that’s propelled Celebrini into the thick of the Hart Trophy race — deservingly so.

Warriors rout Heat 135-112, but Jimmy Butler III’s injury looms large

https://www.goldenstateofmind.com/general/107454/warriors-rout-heat-135-112-but-jimmy-butlers-injury-looms-large

The Golden State Warriors defeated the Miami Heat 135-112 on Monday night, improving to 25-19 on the season and 11-4 over the team’s past 15 games. They continued climbing in the standings, hoping to escape the play-in. Yet, all that success became a moot point when Jimmy Butler III’s right knee bent in the wrong direction after he landed awkwardly catching a pass in the third quarter.

Warriors star Jimmy Butler III tears his ACL vs. Heat

https://www.goldenstateofmind.com/warriors-news/107492/warriors-jimmy-butler-iii-acl-tear-heat

The Golden State Warriors crushed the Miami Heat on Monday night, winning 135-112, and giving them their 12th win in their last 16 games. But it came at a serious, and heartbreaking cost. In the third quarter, star forward Jimmy Butler III left the game after falling to the floor in agony following a non-contact injury to his knee. Butler was helped off the court, unable to put weight on his leg.

ouch. that sucks. Jimmy was such a good steadying force for the Ws. now they will go back to their crazy ways

Alberto Mendoza enters the portal. I thought it was too late.

Looks like Georgia Tech. I bet this already was in place.

No tampering involved...nah.

Oh I guess players in the Natty have a later deadline.

Justbear's avatar

They can enter late, but a lot of schools have filled their positions so this system is still a failure

IU wins 1st NC in an exciting and close game. Miami certainly had its chances and IU was just better in a couple key moments.

Mendoza's scramble-run-TD was pretty impressive to watch. that is not the kind of thing we have seen him do too much before.

also, that was fun to watch and as an IU alum it was great to see football do well in a basketball-state.

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

they were saying that there were more IU fans than Miami. pretty impressive for the game being in Miami

dcblue's avatar

Because of the time difference I don’t actually get to watch many of the Cal games but my first thought after that run was that I didn’t remember seeing that when he was at Cal. He did have his moments of running this year.

Wiata78's avatar

I remember him being quite good at running to escape a sack.

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

he was doing that A LOT at Cal
