Welcome to the DBD, a W4C community board where one can talk about pretty much anything.
Broccoli and its cruciferous cousins can produce an enzyme called S-methyl-cysteine-sulfoxide when plant tissues are damaged—a kind of defense mechanism. Past studies have shown that some people's saliva contains high levels of a particular bacteria that can produce these sulfuric enzymes, which can affect how people experience the flavors of cruciferous vegetables, among other foods. Do you find broccoli too bitter?
Multiple reports are now confirming that Germany has now agreed to send Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine. A coalition of countries will send their Leopard tanks.
I have a few Metal Earth puzzles. Have put several together, which inspired my loved ones to give me more, and some of these take a lot of skill and effort and time.
Mugs from Oktoberfest. We lived in Germany as little kids so my parents have one from every year from mid 70s-mid 80s on their bookshelf. I always thought it was cool, so I picked up one each time I’ve gone as an adult (three)
Heh, I get the same skepticism from my wife about headphones, although I think I only have about 5 pairs. I've been using a set of Sennheiser 650s for about 5 years now (I got them on a crazy sale for ~$200) and they're fantastic. I'd probably have to spend 3-4x that to get a meaningful improvement and I don't think it would be worth it.
Right, that's the supposed sweet spot. I have the 58x Jubilee, and the Audio-Technica A900x, both $175ish. Next tier up for improvement would supposedly be in the $800 range, and I'm not ready to go there.
Congrats on getting a 650s at that price. If you ever want to sell them let me know :-)
Mugs. I have about a dozen, three of which are in my rotation to use the others are decorative on my desk. The rest in the cupboards. I keep considering building a collection but I'm kind of meh about it. Love the ones I have though.
Kentucky Derby Mint Julep glasses…have 5 from the bad boys I actually consumed at Funny Cide’s ‘03 event….then some various others they sent me for Derby parties we had in the City.
I've probably got ones from 2015-2018. I had a 6 pack from 2017(?) and there are probably 3 left. I had been buying them when we lived in Louisville but they kept breaking. I haven't been back since 2018 so I don't have anything newer. They are pretty cool glasses.
I have a few bobbleheads. I have a Justin Turner one that the Dodgers sent out during Covid. I have 2 or 3 Cal ones, including Cam Jordan. Basically my Cal ones are those that I get from football games.
for cal bobbleheads I have Oski, Marshawn Injury cart, Aaron Rodgers, Kevin moen the play, and Jason Kidd. Overall my favorite bobble is a lon simmons one that has a button that if pushed plays his homerun call.
Roasting's high temperature is also better than boiling/steaming at breaking down the S-MCO enzyme that makes broccoli and other cruciform vegetables bitter. To this point, you should also take your veggies out of the fridge an hour before cooking and then pat them dry after washing them -- which will allow the centers of your vegetables come to temperature faster before the crispy edges require you to take them out.
Finished watching Primal both seasons on HBOMax. Tartovsky animated series, plenty of action, blood, and minimal dialog. Excellent storytelling, I was surprised on how emotionally invested I was as it got near the end over cartoon people and dinosaurs. 19/19, right up there with Invincible for best animated series of the last few years.
I feel like I've only heard of a few of these (Everything Everywhere is on my to-watch list). I guess I'll watch the ceremony to see what else to add to the list.
Watched a movie and got caught up on the Sunday shows…in order:
Movie: Barbarian (HBO) - Holy schitt, one twisted a$$ horror flick. Yikes! Check it out - would love to hear thoughts.
Mayor of Kingstown (Paramount +) - S2E2…definitely not for the faint of heart, but for my money, possibly the best show currently on TV, at least if you’re a Renner fan.
The Last of Us (HBO) - S1E2 - discussed yesterday…I enjoyed E2 a little better than the pilot.
I've had Barbarian recommended multiple times, so I need to check that out. Although I've heard it is something best watched completely unspoiled: don't read any reviews, don't even think about looking at a synopsis, nothing. I know absolutely nothing about it other than that I need to watch it, and I plan to keep it that way.
I think so. I mean, it’s a horror flick, so it’s gory and def for mature audiences. But I’d be more concerned with my 10 year-old twin nephews ever sleeping again…a upperclass-person in HS should be able to handle...
New documentary at Sundance Film Festival has new damning sexual assault evidence against Justice Beer. Too bad it is too late and he'll sit on SCOTUS until death.
When the worm turns, it could get uncomfortable for Justice Beer. He's slime, we all knew it as Christine Blasey Ford sat and testified despite death threats and expressions of disdain from members of the Senate Judiciary GOP members. Someone like that should NOT be allowed to remain on any bench, much less the highest court in the United States.
Remember that counterintelligence FBI agent that I posted about yesterday that was arrested for being a Russian agent? Well, he was the agent who was tabbed to investigate Russian interference in the 2016 election and miraculously found nothing.
OLD Cal bug fan, (since Santa Cruz) was saying we shouldn't wasted $$$ on fixing the stadium - but Because it would have killed 1,000's if the EQ hit at the right time! - it was a very, very big deal.
quick recap from the Bancroft Library event last night in NYC which was at the jacket/tie required Knickerbocker Club right next to Central Park.
it was neat to hear about their extensive collections for papyrus and Latin American influenced stuff from early and recent CA history.
they, of course, wanted you to donate $$ to the libraries at Cal but it was a very light prompt. it was mostly nice just to meet some other Cal alums of all different ages and backgrounds in NYC. probably there were only about 30 people there.
Large or small school? Where would you suggest your current not very outgoing A- high school junior go to college in 2024? Private? Anyone know how much religious education (he's not a fan) is required at a school like Gonzaga? How important was small class size for those of you who experienced it?
we are starting to think about much of the same for our HS soph. not that they are not outgoing, but seem to thrive in smaller settings of close friends.
that being said, i know that BIG places allow you to find those small groups and you have a lot more choices. small places might make it easier to establish from the start, but w/ less overall diversity.
my physics major classes at Cal were in the 10-25 person range. i am told that those same classes are 50-100 these days.
my Classics major classes were in the 2-15 person range and were a lot more intimate.
aside from some big electives like Econ and Poli Sci, i didnt really have any big courses in my chosen majors. i thought that Cal was a huge school where you could still get a small classes and a ton of personal attention if you just knew where to look. i am sure if i was a bio or chem major it would have been somewhat different.
personally, i loved the small classes, made great friends, good lifelong connections w/ professors, etc. i was also one of those people who liked to ask a lot of questions in class. so the smaller classes certainly allowed more room for that.
Rough news for Angels fans…speculation is this could pave the way for an Ohtani extension, but a majority of baseball guys think there’s little chance he re-signs in Anaheim. Puzzling move by Moreno, as the value of the organization dips if you lose Ohtani.
I thought for sure the plan for the Dodgers was to get under the luxury tax and then offer the world to Ohtani next offseason. But he who shall not be named got reinstated and blew those plans.
With the way MLB contracts have been going lately, Ohtani's next one is going to be utterly gargantuan. Probably one small step below a lifetime contract for infinite money.
The 3 largest that would be movable are CT3, Muncy, and Treinan. CT3 plays too many positions well so, even though he didn't hit at all, I don't see him being moved. Muncy can play 3 of the 4 IF positions so I don't think he'll be moved. Treinan is hurt so no one will take his contract. Maybe one of the relievers but I don't think there are any high contracts there other than Treinan.
Betts and FF aren't going to be moved. Will be interesting to see what happens and how they can get below the threshold and still have a chance to make it deep into the playoffs.
Apparently Joe Lacob was an early suitor. Ultimately no deal was achieved not necessarily due to price. Going from $183 million to $2 billion plus represents an 11x return which one would think would be enough for Moreno to exit.

Something that you collect, but you're not serious about it and only have a few
I have a few Metal Earth puzzles. Have put several together, which inspired my loved ones to give me more, and some of these take a lot of skill and effort and time.

Hmm. I don't think I collect anything seriously or not seriously.
What about Cal football-induced broken hearts?
I throw them away
Headphones. Semi-serious about it but have not busted through the $200 price point yet. I own about 10 pairs....my wife says I only have 2 ears.
Heh, I get the same skepticism from my wife about headphones, although I think I only have about 5 pairs. for cal bobbleheads I have Oski, Marshawn Injury cart, Aaron Rodgers, Kevin moen the play, and Jason Kidd. Overall my favorite bobble is a lon simmons one that has a button that if pushed plays his homerun call.
Broccoli
I've been lightly steaming or boiling them and then dipping them in Kewpie deep roasted sesame dressing from Costco.
I love roasting broccoli crowns with olive oil and sprinkling then drizzling a little balsamic over it…pretty good version of Newman’s Vile Weed.
Roasting does wonders for brussels sprouts and broccoli. That little crisp in texture makes a huge difference.
And asparagus.
19/19 .. a very common thing to eat in our house.
i like cutting up the stalks and making pasta dishes w/ them.

I need to watch that. Short Round/Data are two
iconic characters from my childhood!
Highly recommend it. 2nd best movie I've seen this year (alright...I've only seen 2 and the other was Top Gun).
Triangle of Sadness was one crazy a$$ ride, folks. Highly recommended, but it’s wild.

Don't look up anything...but watch it.
Parental guidance is advised.
Serious question. Watch it with a 17-year old? We don't filter much for her, but this is right on the fence for me.
I think so. I mean, it’s a horror flick, so it’s gory and def for mature audiences. But I’d be more concerned with my 10 year-old twin nephews ever sleeping again…a upperclass-person in HS should be able to handle...

Arte Moreno pulls LA Angels off the market

They wasted Trout, now they are wasting Ohtani. It’s like a Bermuda Triangle for generational talent
Rough news for Angels fans…speculation is this could pave the way for an Ohtani extension, but a majority of baseball guys think there’s little chance he re-signs in Anaheim. Puzzling move by Moreno, as the value of the organization dips if you lose Ohtani.
I think he'll end up just fine. Angels fans . . . probably not. I know, I'm one of them. :(
I don't hate the Angels but, as a Dodger fan, I will wish any misfortune upon that team to obtain Ohtani.
Absolutely. Ohtani doesn't just excel at 2 positions; he has off-the-charts charisma. He and the Dodgers can monetize that relationship for decades.
He’ll break $400M.
Fellow Dodger fan, still plenty of time to get under the tax. Regardless, lots of payroll cleared this offseason to make room for Shohei.
