COST OF LIVING

Expand full comment
SGBear's avatar

Where I live, it is approximately the median cost-of-living in the US. It is much, much cheaper than SF or NYC, which comes apparent whenever I visit. It is also a lot more expensive than how it used to be or other places - and people here never stop complaining about how they ca barely afford to live here.

I'd argue that he managed this postseason almost perfectly. Went with bullpen games which succeeded more often than not. Hopefully he's learning more to manage with his gut than just what the numbers say. In the past, he would've pulled Treinan in the top of the 8th in game 5. First when he went out the first time, and then after he got Stanton on 1 pitch after the visit. He's admitted as much.

He did seem to improve this past year, but the bullpen game strategy was worrisome at the time, even though it worked. I would counter that the inability to keep pitchers healthy for the post season has been a problem for years with him, given what he has, and is supposed to, work with. Should not get into a position of the best pitchers not available at the most important times. and getting into position of needing to rely on a bullpen game when they shouldn't.

Bench attack leads Warriors in blowout win over Bulls

https://www.goldenstateofmind.com/2025/1/23/24350797/warriors-bulls-scores-recap-steph-curry-gui-santos-quinten-post

After a heartbreaking and deflating loss on Wednesday in which they blew a 17-point halftime lead against the Sacramento Kings, the Golden State Warriors got an immediate chance to put it in the rearview mirror. They hosted the Chicago Bulls on Thursday, and I was fascinated to see how they would respond.

I think what you observe is happening across all government agencies.

--------------

Dear agency employees,

We are taking steps to close all agency DEIA offices and end all DEIA-related contracts in accordance with President Trump’s executive orders titled Ending Radical and Wasteful Government DEI Programs and Preferencing and Initial Rescissions of Harmful Executive Orders and Actions.

These programs divided Americans by race, wasted taxpayer dollars, and resulted in shameful discrimination.

We are aware of efforts by some in government to disguise these programs by using coded or imprecise language. If you are aware of a change in any contract description or personnel position description since November 5, 2024 to obscure the connection between the contract and DEIA or similar ideologies, please report all facts and circumstances to DEIAtruth@opm.gov within 10 days.

There will be no adverse consequences for timely reporting this information. However, failure to report this information within 10 days may result in adverse consequences.

Thank you for your attention to this important matter.

Sonoma State dropping all sports. Is this the beginning of a trend?

Expand full comment

A single data point in a large population where everyone but about two dozen universities suffer.

Expand full comment
FiatSlug's avatar

Maybe the early beginnings of a trend since we are in the early stages of the burn it down crowd having sway.

My theory is that the intercollegiate landscape is changing rapidly and it will be heavily influenced by what happens with college football due to its ability to generate revenues. NIL remains an unknown factor of influence; it can make or break programs.

Title IX is in for rocky times as the anti-woke people will not care about enforcement. It remains to be seen what effect that will have.

Too many variables to accurately predict whether Sonoma State is a harbinger or an outlier. But the one thing that is certain is uncertainty itself.

my graduate thesis project was called HEAT - High Energy Antimatter Telescope. i worked on it for about 7 years.

it was basically a particle detector hoisted into space by a helium balloon and it floated around for 18-36 hours trying to detect protons and anti-protons.

the idea is that there should not be many anti-protons around. because of conservation of energy/charge rules, high energy collisions in interstellar space can create a matter-antimatter pair. then that anti-proton can travel virtually untouched for 1000's of years and eventually get detected by HEAT because space is mostly empty.

the scientific reason for doing this experiment was to validate if certain types of "new particles" might be out there in the form of dark matter and it could possibly contribute to an unexpected number of anti-protons.

needless to say, we did not find any smoking gun signature of what the dark matter might be made out of. everyone is still looking for it in the form of new particles or this even-more-mysterious dark energy
