I am impressed at the metamorphosis of Lily James to play Pam Anderson. She is better know for her role as Lady Rose, the "Cousin Oliver" role in Downton Abbey.

every time I see the adds, I think "Lady Rose, but with tacky makeup & a pushup bra" - it's an impressive costuming / makeup job.

Finished season 2 of Ted Lasso.

I really enjoyed the Christmas episode, the night out with Coach Beard was lackluster, Nate went full Anakin/Vader transformation.

Cugel's avatar

I might be the only person who liked the Coach Beard episode. A bit of a Noirish comedy.

heyalumnigo's avatar

I liked it as well. Was different in a good way. Got to see a different side of him.

GoldenSD81's avatar

I liked parts of it and definitely agree with the noirish comedy description is spot on. It just don’t all come together for me.

g.oso's avatar

I thought it was called "The Book of Boba Fett." Why are they giving us The Mandalorian season 2.5?

GoldenSD81's avatar

I think TBoBF is still great and I like the inclusion of Mando and I think it makes sense from a story perspective to include him.

sycasey's avatar

Even though I know it's likely they had this planned out long ago, it really feels like they realized mid-season that people care more about Mando and Grogu than Boba Fett.

Cugel's avatar

We're not complaining.

TIL that Iona is in New Rochelle, NY.

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

about a mile from my house.

Justbear's avatar

I grew up in Scarsdale and Rye. Are you from the area?

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

as you know, those are our neighboring towns. a little "nicer" in terms of upscale-ness, but we will live in a nice little sweet spot in NR that is similar.

i grew up in Moraga in Bay Area w/ HAG but we have been in NYC area since 2000. living in NR for 18 yrs now.

but i still would not say i am a New Yorker or from here ...

Justbear's avatar

Nice. I moved from NY to California during high school in 2000. Looks like we switched places.

Newellbany's avatar

I don't know how he ended up in Iona and not Siena College. Both schools are in the mighty MAAC, but Siena is closer to the horse racing Mecca of Saratoga and it plays in a pretty legit downtown arena and actually gets fans when the team is good. Siena went to the Sweet 16 a couple of years ago! It would have been a perfect fit. Why do I care, you ask? Siena is like a half mile away from Casa Newellbany.

BentPawn(Don)'s avatar

Very nice campus. We named our oldest daughter Siena, and I was in town for work. Swung by and grabbed plenty of swag. Still have the 'Siena Dad' mug, which causes eyerolls from my kids.

heyalumnigo's avatar

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

It’s the same thing with Bruce Pearl at Auburn. Now that what once was cheating is legal bc of NLI, these guys are untouchable....they win. It’s a no-brainer.

Newellbany's avatar

Put a shirt on, Bruce!

AndyPanda's avatar

Well, it's not like Tucson is known for its friendly, welcoming game experience.

Newellbany's avatar

An interesting dynamic about McKale is that it's energy has always been fueled by the white-haired crowd. The students didn't even used to show up, but those retirees were always loud as hell. I give them credit.

AndyPanda's avatar

That has changed. But your point is historically very valid.

AndyPanda's avatar

Hard to tell what is legit and what is allegiance to the former coach and his ways here. It isn't consistent with Harsin's record at Boise, and not a unanimous opinion of the players at Auburn. It still has to hurt recruiting; anyone would be leery if they had other options that seem more comfortable or trustworthy.

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

Dan Lanning shoulda held on in Athens…he’d have gotten the gig after ‘22 season.

Do we think he would bolt Eugene after just a season?

GoldenSD81's avatar

That would be hilarious if he leaves Oregon for Auburn. I really hope this happens.

PawlOski's avatar

Cept then we have to suffer through the Wilcox-to-Oregon rumor mill all over again.

GoldenSD81's avatar

To be fair, Biden kind of had his Mission Accomplished moment back in July.

Cugel's avatar

Sort of, undercut by trumpy Americans who won't get vaccinated.

GoldenSD81's avatar

True but also the unforeseen rise is omicron and it infecting vaccinated people put a damper on it as well. As well as omicron causing schools to go to virtual again or hybrid.

Cugel's avatar

Yeah but, I think he framed it as "We can... if we do this" - never, "yeah it's done" - that's a pretty big difference between that "Mission Accomplished"

DC Trojan's avatar

well, good luck to the people of Iowa, although I think that's just making it official

MoriBear's avatar

I kinda agree that "The flu and other infectious illnesses are part of our everyday lives, and coronavirus can be managed similarly", but it requires the people promoting it to not be anti-vax assholes who can't do the bare minimum (a mask) to not spread the virus.

NY Giants name Mike Kafka as their new OC, hopefully to create the metamorphosis their offense needs

https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/33208947/new-york-giants-set-name-mike-kafka-offensive-coordinator

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

Daboll & Kafka have succeeded with Josh Allen & Pat Mahomes.

Daniel Jones is not Josh Allen. Daniel Jones is not Pat Mahomes.

This team needs a QB.

GoldenSD81's avatar

He certainly isn’t Josh Allen or Mahomes but I think Jones is a good QB. Better than Jimmy G in terms of talent and athleticism. Jones hasn’t had much talent on offense to help him. Barkley is good but he is always injured. None of the NYG WRs would start for the Bills or KC, they may not even make those rosters.

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

The list of current starting NFL QBs that are better than Garoppolo is 20+ deep!! The NYG should draft another OL early…

I agree with you on the WRs EXCEPT for Kadarius Toney…he’s a freak - just electric…when healthy, he can be a Deebo Samuel-type player, esp. with a better offensive mind than the vanilla ginger Garrett…look for him to explode next year in a Tyreek Hill role for Kafka in Jersey…if Jones is anything, of course.

Keep an eye on Toney for your fantasy draft next year, Golden!!

GoldenSD81's avatar

I think Jimmy G is probably in the 16-20 range in terms of QB rankings.

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

I would disagree with you, but with the utmost respect my friend. ;-)

SGBear's avatar

People testify against Dan Snyder at House Oversight Committee. It doesn't look good and makes the $10m NFL fine seem like a slap on the wrist.

https://www.cnn.com/2022/02/03/sport/nfl-washington-commanders-dan-snyder-new-allegations/index.html

Newellbany's avatar

Did the DBD already discuss the new Commanders name?

Fire Starkey's avatar

its sooooooooooo lammmmmmmmmeeeeeeeeeee

Newellbany's avatar

I'd have gone with "Washington Hogs." I would have said that the name is a tribute to the franchise's famous offensive lines in the 80s and 90s, but that'd be a lie.

dcblue's avatar

he is pretty universally reviled around here.

AndyPanda's avatar

But he can afford it, and as long as there are no performance requirements on or off the field for franchise operation, WTF is what you are going to continue to get.

DC Trojan's avatar

it's hard to explain just how much he's killed off local support. Twenty years ago, all you heard on Mondays was people talking about the Skins game. There are still fans, for sure, but they don't have anything like the "mindshare" now & home games are rather like Rams' home games in terms of being crowded out by opposing teams' fans. The central irony in all this being that Snyder is a self-professed superfan who wanted to bring back the glory days; I'd feel bad for him if he weren't such an absolute scumbag.

GoldenSD81's avatar

He is basically the NFL equivalent of a slumlord.

GoldenSD81's avatar

So, we probably need a new mens basketball coach sooner than later.

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

Ideally we’d get one at the conclusion of this year, but the AD just re-upped a guy who wins about 38% of his conference games in large part because he (inexplicably) said no to another school.

After the APR, Fox is probably a candidate for a lifetime contract...

paulie's avatar

wasn't there a brief time when Cal was a basketball school?

Cugel's avatar

Sort of, I think from 1996-2016 we averaged 3rd in the Pac 10-12 and won the conference title once. You can decide if that counts for anything. Haas used to be packed, before we had season tickets, best we could find were like row 30 in the middle sections 1998-2002.

FiatSlug's avatar

Haas rarely sold out but averaged more than 10,000 per game in the earliest years of Haas Pavilion's existence, all during the Braun era. Off the top of my head, I think the greatest number of sell-outs in a season was 5, and usually it was no more than 3 (UCLA, Arizona, Stanf*rd).

Cal has not had a season average above 10,000 in a very, very long time and probably has averaged around 8,000 or fewer since Cuonzo Martin left. For reference, Harmon Gym's capacity was officially 6,598; it was regularly sold out before the renovation/expansion project that made it Haas Pavilion. I fear that attendance is trending towards Harmon Gym territory.

I have the data at home.

FiatSlug's avatar

This was true. In the early years of the Ben Braun era.

sycasey's avatar

Seems like roughly from the Jason Kidd years through the Shipp/Tamir teams Cal was primarily a basketball school.

g.oso's avatar

i don't remember that

GoldenSD81's avatar

Some school are football schools, some are basketball schools, Cal is firmly neither.

AndyPanda's avatar

Who had a week's lunch money on UW - 20 last night?

Cal may not win again.
