Welcome to the DBD, a Write for California community board where one can talk about anything – Cal-related or off-topic. Comment threads are sorted by topic. Anything is fine, so long as you’re generally civil.
The Daily Bear Dump (DBD) is a Write For California community board that has a history stretching back to its predecessor at CaliforniaGoldenBlogs. Feel free to join us in our daily banter. We are on the front page for this post so hopefully we can be on the way to 1000! Starting tomorrow, you can find us daily in the “Recent Posts” at the bottom of the front page.
This is a DBD dictionary that was posted on CGB on 2014-09-17 by AndBears. We’re republishing with some edits so that WFC participants become familiar some of the CGB DBD history. Many of the old DBD participants that the dictionary entries that are named after have stopped participating due to life happening. Maybe we can drag some of them back to the DBD! We sometimes would hit 1000+ posts in a DBD, many times due to Twist and Rishi providing fashion advice. Or sometimes arguments on Five Guys vs In ‘N Out.
In the spirit of welcoming more people to our conversations, I’ve refreshed the DBD Dictionary to help familiarize our new guests with our strange sayings. We’ve built up quite a culture here in the Daily Bear Dump and we talk about a lot of things here besides Cal Sports.
Please suggest additions and edits in the comments below.
Regular internet Memes: (Let’s start out slow)
FWIW – for what it’s worth
IIRC – if I remember correctly
IMHO – In My Humble Opinion
LOL – laughed out loud; differentiated from LULz
LULZ – subset of laughing out loud where in the laugh is at someone in a mean or mocking nature. Usage “When that racist gramma fell down the stairs I lulz’ed”
To Troll – to post a controversial viewpoint to see what arguments you can start.
obvi: Shorthand for obvious or obviously.
#[Text] – to label something or add it into a category of like things
FTFY – Fixed that For You
‘Merica OR Amurica – shorthand for the most idiotic, blindly patriotic version of the United States of America
“This”: to validate what another has posted. [from Anchorsteam Bear]
DBD Dictionary:
To Atoms (v).Usage: “I don’t understand this comment, can you atoms it up for me?” To explain a joke, which often ruins the punchline. Example: TwistnHook: “You see it’s funny, because both a duck’s beak and a bar tab are called a bill” Rishi: “Thanks, Atoms.”
Cugel’d (v, past tense): When someone posts random inflammatory comments from a news article (or a fake news article from the Onion) to troll the DBD, and you get taken in by it and believe them to be genuine. Cugel has been susceptible to this phenomenon several times, so it’s something he has become known for.
WHOSE [NOUN]? : A response to incorrect grammar, usually the incorrect usage of possession pronouns. Believed to be started by both overly eager grammar enthusiasts and the popular ‘Whose House’ Cal Football promotional video. Usage: “The bear is awesome; its [correct it’s] roaring!” Rishi: “WHOSE roaring?”
Pringles: Originally as a reference to Charles “Lol” Pringle, Cal Golden bear from the 1898 Football team, it has become a verb and substitute for LOL. One can pringle in response to a joke, state simple ‘pringles’ or ‘pqtm’ – shorthand for pringled quietly to myself. Many have found this seems to fit the experience of one’s response when reading humorous comments better than LOL.
Rec’d: A short-hand of approval, implying the full statement ‘I enjoyed your comment and thus will use SB Nations rec button to show my appreciation”. There is some debate of whether it is necessary or not to actually rec the aforementioned comment.
Rishi [less-than-3] Cock: It was said, just once, but it was enough.
1%: An accusation of wealth, declaring the other person a top 1% income earner. Scootie: “I went to a hotel with a POOL this weekend!” Rishi: “You are the 1%!!!”
Sunshine Pumpers: People who make overly optimistic predictions about football or other Cal things. There was an animated GIF but I can’t find it anymore.
Racis!: (adjective) A comment or other object/person can be racis if it is facetiously racist. Twist “Gold bears are the best bears”. Rishi: “That’s Racis!”
Cool. : another way of saying ‘whatever you say’ in a snarky, dismissive way. Usually at the end of a long discussion which has reached an impasse. It is used as the only word in a comment to illustrate its dismissive attitude. (Different, than ‘oh, cool!’ which is not negative). Also related is “cool story, bro” with which one can dismiss a useless or unfunny story.
Twist’s Wedding Night: any general situation of awkwardness, or especially failure to complete a task or fulfill one’s role will bring out someone saying “sounds like Twist’s Wedding Night” – which, of course, is making fun of Twist and his failure to please his wife. [--From LeonPowe]
The Venn Diagram – once casually mentioned [by LeonPowe] that all the posters on CGB (especially DBDs) tended to be chemists, lawyers, and Indians – from India, not Native Americans or Stanfurd students pre1972 [--From LeonPowe]
“go on” to increase the thread count towards the once elusive #1000 [from Anchorsteam Bear]
PSoCY: Shorthand for ‘Pooper Sex or See YA’. It’s probably best to ignore this.
@ XXX @: @@ is used to indicate sarcasm. In the old sbnation comment system, surrounding text with @XX@ changed the font and indicated sarcasm.
New DBD Dictionary Additions:
CGBHH: California Golden Blogs Happy Hour. Every so often a few of us get together in an actual bar to assure ourselves of having real internet friends instead of internet bots. Occassionally it will be expanded to include a special theme, and as such ‘CGBHHCEB’ might mean California Golden Blogs Happy Hour Central East Bay but would never happen because Walnut Creek.
Pulling a Cugelson: Once upon a CGBHH, Cugel was sitting and chatting with a number of good looking posters. A fine looking young man with a young lady comes into the bar, sees Cugel and turns right and back out the door. We are later informed that the young man was in fact Cugel’s son and was not all that thrilled about meeting his dad in a bar. Or in short-hand, this gif:
Puresilencenews: unnecessary and depressing news often brought in by the poster Puresilence. Not limited to news stories, it can also be used to highlight sad news or ironically sad news. Fire Starkey: Looks like it’s going to be 70 degrees at the game Saturday! Twist: Skies out, thighs out! Andbears: #puresilencenews
HAPPY LAWYERDAY!!: Lawyer day is Tuesday because we have so many lawyers on the dbd. Suspicion is that lawyers are unfulfilled in their work lives because they either evict grandmas or get excited about the boring kind of briefs. Just like Puresilence sometimes has his corner, lawyers are confined to Tuesdays.
Boomtho Story Time (BST): see Federer Express theorem
Federer Express theorem (FET): see Boomtho Story Time
High fives (o/ ): The poster on the higher comment aligns with the one on the lower comment, essentially like this: o/ \o to illustrate two people high fiving. Sometimes things get out of hand and it turns into a Nazi rally: o/ o/ o/ o/ o/ o/ o/ o/ o/ o/ o/ o/ o/ o/ o/ o/ o/ o/
Fashion Terms:
- Suns Out, Guns Out: if it is a pleasant sunny day, I encourage you to wear short sleeve shirts. - Skies out, Thighs out: a bastardization of ‘Suns Out, Guns Out’ in which if there are clear skies, then short shorts should be worn. It is highly discouraged. - Brotank: another name for a tank-top (or ‘wife beater’) worn by bros, usually at outdoor shows. A piece of clothing associated with ‘Suns Out, Guns Out’
BEWB: In trying not to name my employer, I decided to call it “Big Evil Bank” or BEB. But someone here had the helpful suggestion that it is in fact a global organization so I should call “Big Evil Worldwide Bank” or BEWB for short so we can continue to make jokes re: BOOBIES!
CGB: : A way to take a recently used phrase and make an observational joke about the California Gold Blogs by suggesting that phrase as a tagline. Twist: That law only applies to the uneducated. Yes We Cannon: CGB: only applies to the uneducated.
NEVER SURRENDER, NEVER REFRESH!: Only applicable in the new world of editable comments where an edit made to a comment is only visible on refresh of the DBD page. A commenter might use this declaration to say they will not accept the edit and will never give up the original comment.
Mistakes were made: A way for a poster to communicate regret for their actions, in the manner of a politician or corporate executive, while still distancing themselves from making the actual mistakes.
“If only he was armed”: said tongue-in-cheek where in it is suggested that all problems can be prevented if the victim had a gun. [use] puresilence: Former White House press secretary James Brady has died at 73. golden oso: if only he were armed.
KABAM!: Interjection used to reinforce a punch line, similar purpose as BAZINGA, only more Cal-oriented since it is now Kabam Field at California Memorial Stadium.
Burn!: Interjection used to reinforce an insult, similar purpose as BAZINGA and KABAM! but only to be used on insults. A picture or graphical reference to a burn is often substituted for actual language.
BST/FET: The goal is to tell a story that is tangentially related to some topic here. It was once/still is called FET for Federer Express Theorem, which states for every topic on theDBD, someone can come up with a personal anecdote related. One day, boomtho shared a personal anecdote tangentially related to some story here, calling it Boomtho Story Time. Someone asked him how it differed from a FET and, since he had no good answer, it became a thing.
Go Blue!!! Boo Rishi!!! (or GBBR): A exclamation to show support for the Dodgers baseball club, while deriding the Giants baseball club (of whom Rishi is a fan).
Frothy: Adjective used to give extra emphasis to an awesome event. use case: TheScientist came out of the bedroom and said frothy night, Broseph. I asked him what just happened and he said he had just raw dogged some randoms and he loved my new silk sheets but I should probably get them cleaned now. [via FireStarkey]
*/19, WB/WNB: A rating scale unique to the DBD in that it uses an specially designed 19-point scale and a final rating of ‘Would Bang’ or ‘Would Not Bang’ (more points should indicate more likelihood of bangeration). Use: Scootie likes Idris Alba as the next James Bond and gives him a rating of 18/19 WB.
#college: an implication of sexual experimentation with an appealing person, usually a girl-to-girl interaction. HAG: That _____ is an excellent reporter. Andbears: Also, I’d totally #college her.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Useful Cal Shorthand: (Although if you don’t know this, why are you here?)
Stanfurd – the proper way to address the farm school across the bay.
Old Blue – a long-time fan who has quietly given up any hope of glory, but expects the worse possible outcome. (ahh, aren’t we all excellent sunshine pumpers).
LATE ADDITIONS:
Outlier!! – An expression used to assert the exceptionalism of something, esp. with regard to size. Typically used with reference to penis size. As there are many DBDers in the Indian portion of the CGB Venn, Fire Starkey latched upon the occasion of a global survey ranking Indians and Koreans at the bottom of the list to cast aspersions on CGB Indians. Naturally, all responded with enthusiastic claims of being statistical outliers in this regard. OUTLIER!!
There were many handles I remove since they no longer contribute to the DBD. I did keep the ones where the handles were integral to the entry. Like FET or BST.
PALOS VERDES - Senior Adora Liu shot a three-over par 74 Tuesday, finishing with a three day total of 217 (+4), good for 19th place in the final round of the Therese Hession Regional Challenge. Liu led the Bears with eight total birdies through 54 holes.
The California women's basketball team (13-10, 4-6 ACC) will look to start the second half of ACC play strong when it heads to play at Georgia Tech at McCamish Pavilion on Thursday at 4 p.m. PT.
Freshman standout Tonya Paulsson was named the Atlantic Coast Conference's Newcomer of the Week, announced Tuesday by the conference. This is the second weekly conference honor of Paulsson's career after earning the same recognition following week one on Jan. 6.
California senior Joshua Thai has been voted the ACC's Co-Men's Diver of the Week, the conference office announced Tuesday. It marks Thai's third weekly honor since the Bears joined the ACC last year.
California women's water polo freshman Despoina Drakotou is the MPSF Newcomer of the Week for the third consecutive week, making her the first three-time honoree since 2018. Her historic honor comes after a historic effort in Cal's recent win over Pacific, as Drakotou scored the second most goals by a Bear in a game with her seven-goal outburst.
Drakotou was a perfect 7-for-7 shooting in Cal's 25-9 victory over No. 17 Pacific. She also added an assist in the win, while her seven goals marked the most in a game by a Bear since 2019 and was just one off the Cal record of eight set in 1997. Only one other Bear has won three MPSF Newcomer of the Week awards in a single season -- Olympian Kitty Lynn Joustra in 2018.
Drakotou has scored multiple goals in every game for the 6-0 Bears and she is the team's top scorer to date with 20 goals.
Drakotou and the Bears have one game on the docket this week, taking a trip to face UC Davis at 12 p.m. on Sunday (Feb. 8).
The Dallas Mavericks are trading 10-time All-Star Anthony Davis to the Washington Wizards as part of an eight-player trade, sources told ESPN's Shams Charania.
The Mavs will receive Khris Middleton, AJ Johnson, Malaki Branham, Marvin Bagley III, two first-round draft picks and three second-rounders, sources said.
Davis is owed 58.5 million next year and has a player option for 62 million the following year. The Wizards recently traded for Trae Young who has a player option for next year of 49 million. Both are currently hurt and not playing. At least there is sports talk of something other than the Commanders for a day or two. This move is just in time before the Washington Post sports section goes away as announced today.
Lindsey Vonn ruptured her ACL in a recent World Cup crash, but will still try to compete at the Milan Cortina Olympics, she says.
"I know what my chances were before the crash and I know my chances aren’t the same as it stands today. But I know there’s still a chance, and as long as there’s a chance, I will try," she says.
My kids know that I HATE his play style. Ball dominent and the #1 foul baiter before SGA took over recently. Doesn't get the same foul calls in the playoffs and doesn't know any other way to play. At least back when the Ws were beating the Rockets.
BTW, this is one of the reasons why I'm enjoying this year's Cal MBB team so much more than last year's. Assists are up by 34% from last year's Stoya ball-dominant style of play.
The Rockets decided to build a team around him. 3 point shooters sitting on the outside and he goes 1:1 and either tries to get fouled or kick it out for a 3. And in the playoffs refs swallow their whistles.
This is one of my favorite videos. All of Rockets 27 misses in the WCF.
I mean, this team got pretty close to a championship so it's hard to say that Harden's style was a "losing" one exactly. He did have a lot of other no-shows in the playoffs, though.
i agree on this point that he does not share as much as a championship team requires. i think all the great players w/ multiple championships had to accept and trust their teammates
I can't remember exactly why he left the Thunder, but I thought it was that they wouldn't pay him what he wanted. Had he stayed, they could've been the superteam.
no spoilers .. ended on a medium cliffhanger to tee up the next season. after all the ups and downs and intrigue, this cliffhanger didnt explosive.
again .. the relationship exploration of older and nearly divorced couples is the most interesting part to me, set in the backdrop of presidential politics.
Meteorologists predict a full ice closure is likely later this week or early next week, especially after the Arctic blast this weekend. This would be the first full freeze on Lake Champlain since 2019 (7 years ago).
Fun fact about Lake Champlain: the United States Navy was founded on the lake's southern end where it's essentially just a canal, in the town of Whitehall, NY.
You'd think that the navy would have been founded on the coast - I'd have guessed Annapolis. But no, it was founded in Whitehall, NY - more than 150 miles from the ocean.
Great photo. I gather that's Burlington Breakwater North Lighthouse and Juniper Island?
And then in the distance, what a beautiful view of the Adirondack High Peaks. I'm not positive which ones we're looking at, though, even though I've been on the top of all of them.
My theory is that the big one on the right is Whiteface, the one just to the left of the island is Dial Mountain, and to the left of that is Dix. Not sure, though.
i have not tried to ID all the Adirondack peaks yet. this the (ever-changing) daily view outside our new place in Burlington that overlooks the lake and has direct views of the Adirondacks.
yes about > Burlington Breakwater North Lighthouse and Juniper Island
Would be one reason I wouldn't try to skate on a frozen lake. Not that I'm a decent skater anymore. As a little kid I remember I was good enough to go around the rink in Sunvalley. Never tried to go backwards. When No 1 had a field trip to the skating rink in Oakland, I chaperoned. Was so bad at it and ended up tweaking my back after losing my balance.

It's weird that today we see the entire article while looking at comments whereas usually I see the first couple of lines and then a "Read" link.
Thanks to all who contributed to the re-posting of the DBD dictionary - it was a fun read!

Cal
Must-win men's shootyhoops game tonight. MUST. WIN.
Early tip off for y'all - 5pm. I hope some of y'all in the Bay are going!
Tickets available on seatgeek for $12 with fees. Thinking of going. Tried to get JimmyChitwood to go but he couldn't.
Guessing our boy JimmyC prolly gave you some excuse involving his dogs, no?
Just said he couldn't make it. We can start rumors on why he can't make it!
(I think he's going on Saturday for Clemson.)
He said he was going to if Cal wins tonight.
Oh, hell yeah. I heard he didn't want for the GaTech game to interfere with his daily skin care routine.

Mavericks trade Anthony Davis to Wizards, sources say
https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/47828122/mavericks-trade-anthony-davis-wizards-sources-say
What a difference in a year. Luka traded for basically Max Christie, Middleton, Bagley, and picks.
Davis is owed 58.5 million next year and has a player option for 62 million the following year. The Wizards recently traded for Trae Young who has a player option for next year of 49 million. seems crazy to ski 70+ mph w/ a ruptured ACL.
Has endorsement/NIL appearance deals and won't get paid for a no-show.
Oh this is probably true.
NBC is desperate for her to compete on account of the hotness
Lord Andrew Lindsay she is not
I really, truly, hope this does not end in disaster for Ms. Vonn. That is all.
Warriors lose to Philly
i caught just a little bit of the game right about halftime when the score was close. i guess it didnt end well.

Harden traded to Detroit
My #1 least favorite player of all time. I know he's highly skilled, but it's an unwatchable, losing brand of basketball.
My kids know that I HATE his play style. Ball dominent and the #1 foul baiter before SGA took over recently. Doesn't get the same foul calls in the playoffs and doesn't know any other way to play. At least back when the Ws were beating the Rockets.
He and LeBum are the 2 that I don't like. Even if I do admit they're talented.
BTW, this is one of the reasons why I'm enjoying this year's Cal MBB team so much more than last year's. Assists are up by 34% from last year's Stoya ball-dominant style of play.
i know everyone dislikes him - i rather like him. very shifty, hard to guard, good 3 point shooter.
if he had ended up w/ 4 championships instead of Steph no one would be surprised
Ya wanna make a bet? You're ignoring that Harden is not a team-first player. Which is why, I think, he has haters.

Either that or impose his will so thoroughly like Michael Jordan that no one would ever want to disappoint him.
That's why he doesn't have 4 championships.
I can't remember exactly why he left the Thunder, but I thought it was that they wouldn't pay him what he wanted. Had he stayed, they could've been the superteam.

and since maybe there are some new-ish people after the DBD Dictionary post. it is a 19 point rating scale for this category - not sure why.
asking for a friend - does it apply to food? or just DBD AV Club?
19 point rating? Anything where we rate something.
at our house we have a 29 point scale for food.
1 - throw it away and have pizza
29 - best bite of something you ever had
a normal weeknight dinner at home is in 6-15 range. i am lucky if the kids think i make anything over 20 which happens sometimes but rarely.
recently i made a near perfect carbonara, that was a 29. hard to reproduce of course
Did you use guanciale? The few times I've made it I've used Pancetta becuase I'm not sure where to find guanciale.
pretty sure we did. it is not hard to find where we live.
Frozen (again)
Youngest daughter appears in a stage presentation of Frozen THIS WEEKEND!
That's awesome! Congrats!
snowman? Ice princess? we want to know ..
She's one of the younger kids in this drama program so she's just in the ensemble for Frozen.
She's also in a school performance of Descendants, and she's one of the older kids, so she has a good part with a couple good lines and whatnot.
This kid has been in 17 shows and she's in 8th grade, so she definitely has the theater bug.
