-- SPOILER ALERT --

TIL a new word and profession >> SEXER - Chick checker of a sort

https://www.lantra.co.uk/careers/JobProfile/JobProfileDetails/24

A Sexer distinguishes the sex of chicks and other hatchlings. Sexers have a very important role in poultry production – they work is highly specialised and sought-after, taking a lot of experience to become skilled. To find out the sex of young birds, care needs to be taken to ensure that birds are not stressed or harmed. Instrument or machine sexing has almost disappeared, as manual sexing is more accurate.

Sexer opportunities and careers paths - Most Sexers do this as a profession – some could progress to a senior role, responsible for a team.

Skills/Knowledge You’ll need:

to work in what will be a dark and smelly environment

a very positive attitude to your work

to complete tasks quickly and efficiently

to be prepared and able to undertake long periods of concentration

a keen sense of how to work safely and hygienically

previous experience; the ability to accurately determine the sex of a day-old chick can take up to three years training.

With the possibility of shift work and the location of poultry farms, you’ll need your own transport to get to site.

I'll bet that's how Gonzo got started with his...interest in chickens

I might just do a ham and cheese quesadilla. Had Nations last night after the game and then No 3 and I are driving up to Tahoe so we'll probably eat junk tonight. So I SHOULD have something relatively light for lunch. Maybe some romaine lettuce leaves dipped in the Kewpie sesame dressing.

Also had leftover basil pesto pasta salad I made a few days ago.

The special at our local southern taqueria: blue cornmeal crusted chicken cutlet served on steamed cabbage and carrots with a light zig zag of citrus mayonnaise on top, plus a jalapeno mint sauce around the plate. The mint sauce really made it. Delicious!

heyalumnigo's avatar

oh that sounds pretty good.

Those Evil Patriots have two Cal guys on the team! What to do?

heyalumnigo's avatar

BOOOO Patriots. But the 2 Cal guys have good games. The rest of them don't.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking.

Warriors trade Kuminga, Hield for Porzingas; TJD for 2nd round pick

https://dubnationhq.com/p/warriors-trade-kuminga-podz-for-porzingas

TRADE ALERT!

Attention!! The following game preview has been pre-empted by late-breaking news that the Warriors long and uneven saga with Jonathan Kuminga is coming to a merciful end.

heyalumnigo's avatar

Weird pick since Porzingas has some sort of health issue and hasn't played recently. I guess just trying to get out from Kuminga's and Buddy's contract.

Newellbany's avatar

I like it because I think Porzingas is a good fit for the Warriors, basketball wise, and they aren't giving away eleventeen first round picks to get him.

Next year, if the starts align so that he, Butler, and Steph are all reasonably healthy (which I understand is a big if), they'll have a legit shot.

Matt's avatar

According to SF Gate, he's a free agent next season. If he's injured during this rebuilding year and gone the next, we'd have done better to trade for a case of beer

https://www.sfgate.com/warriors/article/warriors-trade-kuminga-porzingis-21334802.php

Newellbany's avatar

My assumption is that they'd be positioned to negotiate an extension. At least that's my hope.

Regardless, I'd never disparage a case of beer like that.

heyalumnigo's avatar

What if it were 6-6 beer?

Newellbany's avatar

haha you know 6-6 beer is my jam! I don't like my beer trying too hard.

Matt's avatar

To be clear, it was never my intent to disparage beer. I hold beer in the highest esteem

FiatSlug's avatar

Instead of a case of beer, how about the proverbial player to be named later?

sycasey's avatar

Yeah it's a huge longshot but one that could result in a really good team if it comes through. Not many years left with Steph so may as well take it.

heyalumnigo's avatar

I don't see Butler contributing too much the first couple of months. Look at how long it's taken Melton to feel healthy and play 100%. It's been maybe the last 3-4 weeks. So for next year I see Jimmy B not active until maybe Dec and then not playing in B2Bs.

Newellbany's avatar

Yeah, hopefully they can ease Jimmy in and manage Steph's workload next year and then peak in the Spring.

[MBB] Dai Dai Ames Hits Career High In Cal's 90-85 Win Over Georgia Tech

https://calbears.com/news/2026/2/4/mens-basketball-dai-dai-ames-hits-career-high-in-cals-90-85-win-over-georgia-tech.aspx

BERKELEY -- Dai Dai Ames scored a career-high 29 points for the California men's basketball team as the Golden Bears held off visiting Georgia Tech for a 90-85 win tonight at Haas Pavilion. The Bears led by as much as 15 before the Yellow Jackets pulled even, but Cal was able to make the push to victory and improve to 17-6 overall and 5-5 in ACC competition. Georgia Tech is now 11-12, 2-8.

Newellbany's avatar

For a while there, I thought we were going to have a nice relaxing win. But we aren't allowed to have those. I'm really proud of this team for grinding out the dub, though!

This sets up a gigantic home game on Saturday.

heyalumnigo's avatar

In the 1st half GT was missing pretty open shots. Craft is their 3 pt sniper and he missed just about all his 1st half 3s. In the 2nd half he started hitting them and in general GT started hitting shots they missed in the 1st half. And we shot well in the 1st half and regressed to the mean in the 2nd half. But we did grind out the win, which when GT took the lead I thought we were going to lose.

sycasey's avatar

If Cal can win vs. Clemson you have to start saying they are more likely than not to make the NCAAs.

Newellbany's avatar

Definitely. It becomes more an exercise of holding serve because they will have enough quality wins on the resume if they can get it done on Saturday.

[FB] Cal Adds 34 To 2026 Football Roster

https://calbears.com/news/2026/2/4/cal-adds-34-to-2026-football-roster.aspx

Travers Family Head Football Coach Tosh Lupoi announced Wednesday that the California football team has added 34 players to its 2026 roster, including 32 via the transfer portal as well as two additional high schoolers. The additions bring the number of newcomers on Cal's 2026 roster to 50, including 40 who are enrolled for the 2026 spring semester and already on campus. Cal's 2026 transfer portal class is ranked second in the ACC and 14th nationally according to 247Sports.

Newellbany's avatar

This is all great and I'm pumped about the state of Cal football, so this is more a comment about the state of college football:

man, 50 newcomers is an insane number.

heyalumnigo's avatar

And only 2 HS students which is crazy.

dcblue's avatar

The way it says two additional high schoolers, I take that to mean we have other high schoolers who committed earlier but I don’t follow that closely.

heyalumnigo's avatar

Oh maybe that's what it was. I thought for sure we had some, but maybe some re-opened recruiting after Wilcox was fired?

Strut’88's avatar

I recall we had like sixteen prior to this that stuck with the Bears, so now its a total of eighteen or so freshmen.

[SB] New Chapter Of Cal Softball Begins This Weekend

https://calbears.com/news/2026/2/4/new-chapter-of-cal-softball-begins-this-weekend.aspx

The California softball team opens the 2026 season this weekend at the Stanford Invitational, ready for a year of transition - from a new coaching staff to a remade roster to a season away from Berkeley. New head coach Steve Singleton takes over the program after helping Texas win the 2025 NCAA championship as an associate head coach, and he has brought in 15 newcomers to help navigate a season in which the Golden Bears will have no true home. While The Cal Softball Field is being renovated into one of the premier facilities in the country, the Bears will play four "home" ACC series at nearby locations - three at West Valley College in Saratoga and the other at Sacramento State. Cal won't play any nonconference games at home this season.

Strut’88's avatar

Saratoga and Sacramento are not “nearby” places. It’s a shame they couldn’t find some closer options.
