[NYT] RNC Chair McDaniel looks like she will preside over a fantastic term where she sold her soul to allow MAGA to grift the party, bankrupted numerous state GOP organizations, lost a ton of ground in elections, and pissed off her uncle. In the end, it looks like she is being rewarded for her loyalty with getting cast aside. Atta girl.

Las Vegas mayor does not roll out red carpet for A's

https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/39472102/las-vegas-mayor-says-athletics-pitch-new-plan-bay-area

I don't understand the A's at all. It has been clear from the get go that they didn't generate support in LV before announcing the move. I don't know how they think LV is going to make more money than being in Oakland either.

This has been such a trainwreck of a rollout and yet the MLB is going to continue to twiddle its thumbs and pretend nothing is happening.

The owners must be getting an astounding amount of money from Vegas casinos, etc…it is the ONLY explanation for them and their idiot Manfred pushing this so hard, as it promises to be an unmitigated disaster. No one in Vegas gives a shit about the A’s. An expansion team would have such a better shot.

Expand full comment

But it doesn't make sense to put a stadium on a site that is too small on The Strip. LV's mayor said the A's were offered a 60-acre site (!) near downtown LV and they turned it down. The Strip should be rejected out of hand for two reasons: (1) it's hard to get to due to traffic congestion and (2) the site is too small for a domed stadium. Those are insurmountable problems, or should be.

All of which suggests that LV is being used as leverage, except that Fisher and Kaval have royally botched their opportunities from start to finish. A big part of this is that Fisher and Kaval have an unlimited supply of arrogance; they don't learn from their past mistakes.

If I had Fisher's bankroll and control of the A's, I'd keep them in the Bayy Area, without a doubt. But I'd try to quietly put together three sites, knowing that two is probably enough and that one is all that is needed.

The ace up the sleeve should be the Oakland Coliseum site because it has great access by public transit (BART), automobile (two different exits off of I-880), plentiful parking, and a long history in Oakland.

Rebuild there. Play at the Coliseum while the new stadium is being built either to the south or north of the current site. When that building is done, demolish the old Coliseum.

Attempt to find a different site between Oakland and San Jose and in proximity to BART or between Oakland and Albany.

Golden Gate Fields is probably not feasible because most of that area is on unconsolidated soil, which would liquefy in a major shaker. Dozens of piles would have to be driven to bedrock to support a stadium to withstand seismic loads.

More than a decade ago, Lew Wolff wanted to build in Fremont, but that fell apart for reasons that aren't clear to me.

You might be able to piece together enough land in Emeryville to make a large enough site, but you'd have a transportation problem. So, that's probably not feasible, either.

The problem is that Fisher wants to make a huge killing in real estate at the same time he builds a new ballpark. The Howard Terminal project is a manifestation of that desire. Fisher doesn't have a community-based bone in his body.

Expand full comment

Yeah, that's the thing. LV doesn't need the A's. They're getting an expansion franchise regardless. If you're an LV resident, why would you want this broke ass, third world franchise when you can wait a beat or two longer and get a franchise with a competent and wealthy ownership group? The other owners are getting scratch either way. I just take their support as a vote for them to protect their own right to do whatever they want.

Feb 7·edited Feb 7

Exactly. It’s why Vegas citing the Golden Knights as an example they’re ready to contend is just silly. That was an expansion team that had unprecedented access to an elite NHL talent-pool as well - they were handed immediate credibility through instant-contention because the League gave them access to game-changing talent via the expansion draft.

Now you got a city whose locals root for LA, Arizona, Colorado, or the Cubs, etc, They will not support Fisher and the A’s…no chance.

Yeah, especially the Dodgers in their current Yankees free agent domination-like construction. It's going to be especially difficult to compete with them in their backyard in the near future popularity wise.

Paul McCartney at Memorial Stadium, Apr 1990

i volunteered to be an usher w/ another friend. we had to work for a few hours before the show getting people to their seats. otherwise enjoyed a spectacular concert and a rare slice of history.

the locals were not too happy w/ the crowds and the noise. i heard that there was a special exception made for McCartney and probably no more concerts ever again - not sure about that though.

the best part of the concert was the 80k sing-a-long to Hey Jude w/ the lights turned off and everyone with cigarette lighters for little flames, well before the mobile phone era.

My second concert was a Day of the Green featuring the Scorpions, Ratt, Y&T, Metallica and Yngwie Malmstein. It's pretty strange to think the Scorps could fill not only an arena, but a stadium. Metallica were relatively unknown. It was a coming out party for them. They of course leveled the rest of the bill. Everything changed after that show.
