I tried out Amazon Go - the no check-out convenience store at the bottom of Amazon's headquarters. I had the same experience that everyone has. You do a quick third-reich salute on the way in to use your palm as your ID, feel weird about the cameras watching you, pick up what you want, and then leave feeling like a shoplifter.

it is a "strange race" you find yourself in when you are used to having status on some airline and then find that it might go away if you dont spend enough money the following year. clearly some capitalist scheme is working its "evil magic" to perfection!

I am so confused this year because I'm going to requalify for Gold on American by June 1 (three months into the year) and I've never not sweated it out at the end before. Maybe I'll make it to Platinum where it starts to matter for upgrades and the like.

Expand full comment

I did a mileage run on 12/29 last year.

Went to see my friend in Vegas for dinner and came back the next morning.

Flew out SNA-SFO-LAX-LAS and flew back LAS-SFO-SNA.

wow 5 segments in 1 round trip. THat's impressive.

End of 2022 I needed 5 and had a business trip to Miami in the beginning of Dec. So I just did 1 stop to Miami, then 1 stop to LAX where I stayed at my sisters and then flew back to SFO the next day. Work paid for the work trip and I found the cheapest 1 way on United (60ish) LAX to SFO so that worked out well. End of last year I didn't think I was close but I looked at the end of Oct and needed 4 additional segments. So I changed my work flight to go from Nashville to Budapest (through EWR) and I bought a 1 way to Nashville to see No 2. Then I did a 6 hour trip to LA for like 90 total. I definitely won't make it this year so I'm not even going to try. It was good while it lasted.

Expand full comment

That's nice when you can add a segment here and there for longer trips.

I didn't fly much last year, had only 10 segments until September so I didn't care, but all the sudden flew 21 segments Oct -Dec so I was short 5 segments for 36 to reach Platinum with United.

In the past I was short 1 segment so I flew to SFO for dim sum lunch and came back immediately with Southwest award ticket.

It makes for some random fun trips.

Expand full comment

do you really get credit for each stop on United? So if I fly to Philly through Chicago I get credit for 2 segments?

It's nice they've upped the points you can get from credit card spend this year.

Expand full comment

yeah they changed it so each takeoff and landing counts as a segment. Don't remember when they did this. Maybe during covid?

Expand full comment

I think it was a year or two before Covid. They changed the qualification from miles to spending, and added the segment requirement too I believe.

short 4 days trip to Stockholm for a memorial for an uncle who died last month. will be a nice sort of family reunion even though it is a somber occasion.

i have 5 first cousins in Sweden as a result of 2 uncles (both dead now) raising their families there.

given the changes in Delta's medallion status earning this is an unexpectedly long trip in that regard.

Supreme Court deciding on Trump ballot eligiblity.

i find it hard to believe that a Trump-stacked court is going to rule against him. Would be funny beyond belief if they did though ...

Expand full comment

I think they may rule fairly narrowly, that keeps trump currently on ballots, but leaves open the door for removing him easily after a criminal conviction related to insurrection (for example).

I wouldn't be too sure.

Given the backlash in the wake of Dobbs, I'd think that the justices including Trump's appointees would think twice before pulling the trigger to shield their boy.

If people identify the Court's ruling, regardless of how it is written, as favoring Trump, SCOTUS will be seen as being out of touch and promoting a candidate, possibly even endorsing insurrection because the insurrectionist is Trump.

Never underestimate the stubbornness of an institution even if it's doubling down on arrogance and stupidity.

What could have been. BRETT JOHNSON was like the 49ers/Bengals' Justin Smith - a dude who was just stronger than everyone else and demanded a double team. Missing him and Jaedon Roberts - who quietly slipped off the spring roster - means we are going to have literal big shoes to fill next year on the D-line.

I have a cast iron and a carbon steel skillet. The cast iron is perfect when you need its thermal mass to not cool down when you put something cool in it - like cornbread batter - and perfect your browned crust on whatever you're cooking. Carbon steel is better for lower mass things.
