SECOND BIGGEST RIVAL

Expand full comment

We can pick who ever, but likely none of these teams will think of US as a natural rival. Some UNC'ers scoff at elevating (NC) State to rival status (Dook is the solid rival), and they've played hundreds of games over decades. I'm excited for the new competition, but sad that we'll have forever newby status where ever we eventually land.

Expand full comment

Maybe in time we will have a second ACC rival, but I think that needs to develop naturally. Right now the number of fucks I give about any ACC team is zero, and I say that in part because I think the ACC may not exist in a couple years so I’m not really ready to commit any mental energy to the league yet

Expand full comment

I propose DOOK. They're the Furd of the ACC.

Expand full comment

Well said. It's clearly complicated in so small part because FSU has very vocally wanted out. But dissolving the ACC for a merger with the Big XII (?) would allow FSU to go where they want to go and means diminishment of the $$ available to the merged conference.

I'm not convinced of either action, to be honest. I have a hunch we're in for a long ride in the ACC in its current form, at least through 2036.

Expand full comment

Maybe so, we’ll see. If we are in there for the long haul then I expect some coach or player will do or say something that will plant a seed for a rivalry - in other words it will develop based on something that hasn’t happened yet

Expand full comment

Yeah. Seems likely.

Expand full comment

Virginia can be our new Stanford. The best academics of all teams. Oh wait, we still have Stanford. Anyway Virginia can be our rival too.

Expand full comment

Umm, Duke.

Expand full comment

i would think that Duke/UNC make a natural replacement for USC/UCLA.

i'd put UNC comparable to UCLA in terms of 2nd biggest rival because of the similarity on many fronts

- academics and Nobel prizes

- how good they are at basketball

- state school

Expand full comment

I think there's a case to be made that Duke, in addition to being "those private school dicks," has overtaken SC in providing dangerous reactionaries to national politics, which frankly I'm okay with.

Expand full comment

As so eloquently put in the poll above, fuck Mack Brown. That is all.

Expand full comment

That makes the most sense because they're a large, prestigious public university.

FSU seems more like ASU, a conference mate that is annoying but not really worthy of being elevated to rival

Democrats flip the seat vacated by celebrated Brazilian Forró musician/co-creator of the Snuggie George Santos. Tom Suozzi beat Mazi Pilip by around 7 points. Santos won his seat by about the same margin in 2022. Turnout was about two-thirds as it was in 2022 because this was a special election, not a general election. The GOP majority is now only 3 seats.

https://decisiondeskhq.com/special-election-results-new-york-3rd-congressional-district/

that margin is a little surprising because it was a very close race leading up to Tuesday. A foot of snowfall yesterday probably didn't help turnout

Expand full comment

The trend holds, with Joe Biden having crappy polls but Democrats overperforming in elections. I don't know what to make of this national environment.

Expand full comment

It's a national polity clearly in flux. I've been saying it for years, but I'll repeat it here: we're in for a sea change in national politics in that the old guard (Boomers primarily) are being ushered off the stage while Millenials are stepping more and more into the light.

This presidential election year will be seen in hindsight as a year in crisis, if it isn't viewed that way already. Both major parties have made huge miscalculations and errors in putting forth their putative nominees. Mainstream media is complicit in this error by not vigorously vetting the candidates' abilities to fulfill a second term and lead the nation.

Either candidate could become incapable of running or serving anytime between now and next January 20 or even after January 20, 2025.

I'd feel much differently if either or both major parties had younger candidates in robust health and with a clear set of priorities.

Expand full comment

With Democrats, I know they're in a tough spot since Biden is an incumbent president. Unless he chooses to step aside on his own it's hard to force out a guy like that. Republicans had their chance to move on from Trump and did not take it.

Expand full comment

The people who would be those younger candidates have already diverted their time and energy in other more productive and lucrative channels in droves, largely because of the Democratic "old guard" that is living in their own world, and a Republican "old guard" that was living in their own world, and ripe for being blindsided and replaced by an interloper that seized the opportunity to take over their position.

Expand full comment

I feel like the DNC and RNC need to go to mediation and just reach a deal not to nominate either Trump or Biden, so the country can move on. I am joking of course about the mediation, but dude, we so badly need an open election with new blood as an opposed to a prepackaged match up of octogenarians. Nobody wants this, it just absolutely sucks and makes our democracy look and feel like a total fucking clown show. It risks turning a lot of young people off to democracy itself

They were on fire. Their 2 guards drove the lane past the smaller UNC guards any time they wanted and probably ended up shooting 65+%. Shot the 3 well. Their center that had only made 8 3s all year had at least 3. UNC couldn't navigate the 2-3 zone, even though they've seen it every year. Though with a new coach, Cuse was playing way more man D the first meeting. UNC didn't have a big man to get to the FT line spot in the zone and ended up putting the short PG there so it was hard to get him the ball. And he doesn't have a great midrange shot yet so when he got the ball they ended up sagging off him.
