What kind of restaurant food does your area lack?

heyalumnigo's avatar

Being in the Bay Area, I feel like I can drive up to 45 min away and get any sort of food I want. Though we don't seem to have bad/good breakfast places like Waffle house, Cracker Barrel, Huddl House, etc. We don't have a good biscuit breakfast place like Bojangles.

And we're missing Tommy's!

We don't have a good French food. The one and only good French restaurant closed and relocated to near Wake Forest (University, not the town).

I live in Irvine. It only has big chains and franchises. It's missing all sorts of hole in the wall type of restaurants.

This might sound like a joke, but it isn't: a Pizza Hut. There isn't one within a 30-minute drive. I know it's crap, but sometimes you just have to have some of the Hut.

A good sit-down Mexican place. There are a couple that are just OK, and plenty of Taquerias, but once El Burro (in Newark, CA) closed, there hasn't been anything to really write home about.

No 2 LOVES their bread sticks. The only ones around me are the ones attached to Targets. I'll have to check out the Bay Area map to see what area I'm in. I need to find a link to it.

For being an only about an hour from the coast, surprisingly, seafood is in short supply. Anything from anywhere northern Europe is rare as well.

And how is it that we can't have a Waffle House in the state?

I was going to make a joke along the lines of "you never can find good Lithuanian food when you want it", but then I remembered actually seeing a Lithuanian food truck in Raleigh

And then I remembered that we have a Lithuanian spirit distiller near me, which has one of the original Lithuanian/Grateful Dead shirts

Writing from the town next door to the origin Waffle House, I can tell you the lament here is the not yet any In-N-Out (Whataburger has already started staking its claim on Atlanta area). The tax-dodge move of their corporate headquarters from OC to Nashville gives us hope...

GOAT CAL FOOTBALL COACH

Oski Disciple's avatar

No contest. Andy Smith, five seasons unbeaten. Pappy Waldorf runner up with three unbeaten regular seasons and a 53-6-1 six-year regular season run. Tedford third, Allison fourth.

FiatSlug's avatar

Bruce Snyder might have been in that top four if Bockrath hadn't chased him off.

heyalumnigo's avatar

I think if Snyder sticks around, we'd be in the natty conversation within 3-5 years, maybe even sooner given the incoming class.

Oski Disciple's avatar

Yup and maybe Mike White if Dave Maggard hadn't taken a dislike to him.

GOP subcommittee lead by MTG held a hearing where they claimed they found $2.7 TRILLION dollars of fraud in Medicare and Medicaid. Meanwhile, I am sure the Democrats are saying "yes, absolutely, there's tons of fraud there. Please go ahead and touch that third rail, by all means."

US and Russia held peace talks on Ukraine, while not inviting Europe or Ukraine - which is ridiculous. Russia's offer was for Ukraine to surrender and install a Russian-friendly regime. What a frickin' joke. This smacks of Trump trying to solicit a bribe.

Having successfully hamstrung the US Postal Service and did his best to turn the election for Trump, Louis DeJoy announces his departure from the Postmaster General position

https://news.usps.com/2025/02/18/tenure-plan-of-pmg-dejoy-announced/

Macarolina's avatar

I really don't get why Biden didn't get rid of DeJoy. Thoughts anyone?

FiatSlug's avatar

Oh, I have more than a few thoughts. First, firing DeJoy was way down on the list of Biden's priorities. Second, Biden and his team were literally afraid of doing too much to reverse T45 actions and policies. I don't think that they had any idea of where to begin. But this also goes to my most enduring criticism, of not only the Biden Admin, but Democratic leadership as well - their agenda looked like institutional incrementalism when sweeping action was needed.

Oski Disciple's avatar

The Dems have often been a party guilty of half measures.

FiatSlug's avatar

This is so very true and has been particularly since 1980. Democratic leadership is scared of Reagan's shadow, and they continue to be. Therefore, they cannot be trusted in the moment. Younger leadership not scared of the GOP needs to take the damn wheel.

Oski Disciple's avatar

It’s time once again for Oski Disciple’s Question of the Day.

"Man dies constantly until the moment of his demise.” — Martin Heidegger. “My sorrow is my castle.” — Søren Kierkegaard. “Hope, in reality, is the worst of all evils because it prolongs the torments of man.” — Friedrich Nietzsche. Judging from the preceding quotes is it safe to assume that all three of these philosophers were Cal football fans?

AndyPanda's avatar

Certainly captures the essence of the experience. Applicable to hoops as well.
