i have played enough to appreciate how complex interesting and fun it is. i dont really have the time or the people currently to practice.
i used to think it was a fun way to get drunk and pass the time (which it is) and that you got lucky in the cards that you were dealt. there is however quite an intricate system of communicating w/ your partner and actual skill at card play that is mostly based on statistics - very much like poker i imagine.
Most of the communication happens during bidding, although how you lead after taking a trick or respond to a lead can be very useful info as well.
I haven't played in years because Mrs Slug refuses to learn how to play (she vastly prefers cribbage), and the people I could have played with weren't very fun people to be around. Truth be told, I don't miss it as much as I thought I would.
My parents were avid bridge players. One Saturday a month was "bridge club" night at one of the members houses...and they played til midnight plus. I'd get bored silly stuck in some side room if not at home before I was old enough to be home alone.
If the club was at our house, I blamed them for getting me hooked on coffee as I would drift into the living room the early AM afterwards and polish off the cups left....careful not to use the lipstick stained rim of the cups.
My parents were also regular bridge players. They learned it from my Mom's parents and played regularly before my grandparents moved to New Braunfels in 1970. Later, my step-brother and I were introduced and we made a foursome with Mom and Dad. We played frequently until I returned to California in 1980.
Nice. My parents attempted to teach me with some impromptu Bridge lessons after the dinner table was cleared. I was not inspired. I should look into it and see how it goes.
our new Volvo xc60 has 40 mi or so of pure electric range as well as a regular gas tank for another 200-300 miles.
the problem is that it counts your total miles (gas + electric) and divides by home many gallons you use so you get an inflated gas mileage that is basically wrong for long trips.
as soon as you are done w/ the electric part you are closer to 25-30 mpg as opposed to the strangely calculated 50-100 mpg that you get on short trips around town.
furthermore it seems to use this inflated gas mileage to compute your "miles till empty" which seems like a disaster waiting to happen for the uninitiated
Yeah. Construction for the new Vinafast gigafactory broke ground and is located not too far from my house. Nobody expects that thing to get finished by 2025 and if it does, the company still seems doomed. It's a slow motion track wreck.
Trump's "Save America" PAC raked in $8.508 million in January [checks notes]... actually, that's just $8,508 whole dollars. He spent $3.9m. This PAC - ostensibly to be his legal defense fund - will run out of money in two months at this pace. His main PAC "Make America Great Again PAC" is also running out of money. Pressure is mounting that his legal defense will have to start coming out of his own pocket soon (or the Saudis, Russians, Chinese, Qataris, or Emiratis).
On the "not progressing from this BS" front is corporal punishment.
"As of 2024, corporal punishment is still legal in private schools in every U.S. state except New Jersey, Iowa, New York and Maryland, legal in public schools in 17 states, and practiced in 12 of the states."

KAILUA-KONA, Hawaii – The No. 19 California women's golf team moved up in the Pac-12 Preview standings Tuesday after posting the sixth-best score out of the 12 teams competing at Nanea Golf Club.
The Golden Bears improved two strokes on their first-round score, carding an 8-over-par 300 to move into ninth place. They will head into Wednesday's final round two shots behind eighth-place Colorado.
California senior Isabelle Stadden has been named the Pac-12 Women's Swimmer of the Week, the conference office announced Tuesday.
Stadden shattered her own pool records in both the 100-yard and 200-yard backstroke during the No. 7 Golden Bears' victory over No. 5 Stanford on Saturday at Spieker Aquatics Complex. She won the 100 back with a Spieker-best time of 50.29, which was also just three-hundredths of a second off her career-best mark of 50.26 - which is the third-fastest time in the event in the nation this season. Her time of 1:49.64 in the 200 back surpassed the previous pool record she set last month against Arizona State by almost a full second.
The MPSF announced Tuesday that California men's gymnast Jaxon Mitchell was named MPSF Freshman of the Week for his outing last Sunday against William & Mary. Mitchell is Cal's third rookie to earn the honor this season, following classmates Carter Kim (Jan. 16) and Brendan Strom (Feb. 13); this is the first time in program history that three freshmen have won weekly recognition.
