The Campanile falcons Annie and Archie have been MIA for two months. The Cal Falcons raptor expert admits that they are likely victims to H5N1 bird flu and are dead.

When I was on a walk last weekend I saw a falcon. Any chance they flew 2,800 miles?

Tell the DBD about an event where you had a bad view?

Honestly, we had pretty bad seats for the Notre Dame game. End zone and kinda low. The way the game played out, we couldn't really see the offsides BS call, so there was a lot of watching replays on the jumbotron. I'm not really complaining since the game was packed and we were visitors and getting what seats we could (thanks HAG for organizing) - but visitors don't get the choicest seats.

"Saw" the Lakers play at the Forum in Inglewood. Shaq, Kobe. I guess they were there. Our seats were up against the back wall, and even Shaq only subtended an angle of about 2 degrees.

OBS VU or obstructed view applies to the picture at the top of this post. In Cal Memorial 1.1 (with the old press box) there were a few seats where the view was less than optimal. You would have to have been seated near a steel support column to have had a portion of your view blocked and only if the play started in certain specific parts of the field.

Also, the bench seats directly under the scoreboards extended into "notched" areas. Such seats were not numbered so I doubt that space was ever sold as an actual seat. Those areas would have had obstructed views.

I had seats for a Giants Dodgers game at Candlestick where I was in the 2nd to the last row right down the left field line. The foul pole basically lined right up with the line. The way Candlestick was built, with the HUGE space behind the left field fence and the first row of seats, we were so far away from home plate. Those in LCF were further away, but at least they had a better angle of the field.

When Magowan put in the metal bleachers right up against the wall, it was the kind of change that made you wonder why no one had thought of it before.

I do remember kids running for HR balls in that empty space. Then they put in the bleachers. One game I was at Mondesi cleared the LF bleachers. Bonds didn't even move when the ball was struck. Might have been the same game where Bonds did a 360 twirl after swinging the bat and hitting a HR.

About 25 years ago my wife and I took our daughters to a Spice Girls concert. We were so far from the stage that a telescope was required to see the performers. I vowed then and there never to go to a concert, sports event, comedy show or anything else unless I had good seats. A promise I've maintained.

Elon sends angry tweets about how people didn't respond to his "beg for your job in five bullet points" email. He says he will feed the responses in to AI and give people another chance to respond. I have a lawyer friend who got the email. She said there is no way in hell she's responding to his emails.

At what point can we take civil action against Trump and Musk to recover direct and indirect costs of dealing with their actions that should have been non-starters because of clear violations of existing contracts? They are placing taxpayers at tremendous financial liability.

According to the FT, Ukraine agreed to revised US demands. The US dropped its demands of $500b via taking over half of the entire country's natural resources. The revised terms are 50% of all future mineral exploration projects by joint venture - which makes a lot more sense. It locks in business partnership rather than essentially usurping half of the country and guaranteeing their financial slavery to the US for decades.

TIL: 3 out of 5 Utah residents do not have fluoridated water and the state is trying to ban it for the other two.

My dad said he just started dentistry school when the US recommended flouridating water. He said he could see the massive improvement in dental health over time. Going to be a lot of yuck-mouth in Utah and other parts of the US soon.

Expand full comment

He also said that his wealthiest clients had the worst dental hygiene because they drank bottled - unflouridated - water. Reverse osmosis water filters remove most fluoride, but the standard charcoal filtration ones that are in your fridge doors/gravity-based pitchers do not.

For many on this board, fluoridation in the East Bay was probably introduced before your lifetime. Fluoridation wasn't authorized until 1974 by a vote of people served by East Bay MUD. It was sometime later that fluoride was actually added to the water supply.

I recall that my mother had all of us take one fluoride tablet each morning, with breakfast. We also got fluoride treatments at the dentist where a gel was put into trays shaped like the arrangement of teeth in your mouth and you had to close your mouth and hold still for 20 minutes while the gel did its thing. Yuck.

I far prefer having fluoridated water.

That article begs the question - why is that site preferable to any other possible site? Why not just build a series of tanks and pumps close to the canal that will serve to store water to operate the locks?

QB Carson Beck transferred from Georgia to Miami to be with his girlfriend Hannah Cavinder, who is on the Hurricane's basketball team. Hannah's identical twin Haley also plays for the Hurricanes, with both sisters transferring from Fresno State. They have 4.6m Tik Tok followers and are millionaires already based on NIL/endorsements/TikTok. Haley set an NCAA record when she went 109 for 112 from the free-throw line in the 2021-22 season.
