OSKI DISCIPLE’S TRIVA FUN, A DAILY DBD FEATURE

Due to a clerical error, in 1889 a few lepers were accidentally sent to a leopard colony.

(All trivia verified by the International Trivia Foundation.)

I'm guessing at that time there were not yet any leotard colonies. Might be worth a fact check though.

Sink disposal

Expand full comment

Do not want. Here's why - (1) most, if not all, of what you put in a garbage disposal can be composted. (2) There is a list of foods that shouldn't go into a garbage disposal: fats, starchy foods, sauces, fibrous foods (like carrots, celery, etc.), no bones, or fruit stone (pits). (3) garbage disposals suck up electricity, (4) fixing one can be pricey if they can be fixed and often result in a unit replacement.

I haven't had use of a garbage disposal since 1980 excepting the times I've visited the in-laws. I don't miss it.

I put this poll on the DBD because I just thought it was normal to have one and then time and time again went to a house that didn't have one.

Expand full comment

Our house in Louisville didn't have one so I put one in. Turns out when the previous owner had the kitchen moved into a covered porch converted into a kitchen, his contractors didn't glue the drain pipes. The washer drain was put in between the kitchen sink and the rest of the house main drain. I found out it wasn't glued when a Y section plugged up and I snaked it (did it a few times and I had a snake I connected to my drill to clear it). It cleared but I was seeing some weird water coming out from the siding by the crawl space. Turns out the pipe came out at a junction and the dishwasher and kitchen sink was draining into the crawl space. The plumbers that came to fix the pipe told me they just press fitted the pipes and didn't glue it. Not something a home inspector usually looks for.

It always pissed me off how CBS deliberately sabotaged Northern Exposure. I really ought to get back to watching it. Mrs Slug and I got into it about season 3 or 4 and didn't see the earlier seasons.

Nice. Their cover of Orion is pretty sweet - faithful to Metallica's version yet done in their style. Something very easy to put on and just groove to. RIP Cliff Burton, who wrote Orion.

the only way a shutdown knobbles the House majority would be if you started seeing things like airports shutting down, no social security payments, military and law enforcement furloughs. They pass just enough to claim they're only affecting the federal agencies that nobody cares about.

In Sf, there were non-asian people running for office that would have fake Chinese names made up that were things that were phrases that would make a chinese person want to vote for them. Like a white judge using "high" and "justice" in his chinese name. Now non-chinese people basically get transliterated names based on the pronounciation.

On the back of Duke's center getting injured during a court-storming by students after Wake upset the Blue Devils, Alabama's AD is calling for home teams to forfeit if they do.

https://www.msn.com/en-us/sports/other/alabama-ad-suggests-highly-punitive-penalty-for-court-storming/ar-BB1iVCAS

Expand full comment

The call for the home team forfeiting is easily the most over-the-top reaction from this injury or any other court storming. This is only slightly less offensive than the sensitivity that Texas Longhorns fans and alums have about the Horns Down gesture.

There is no real solution to this. Having said that, athletes shouldn't be suffering injuries due to court storming. But there are idiots who won't exercise even a modicum of caution and restraint.

EDIT: The genie was out of the bottle when court-storming became an accepted celebration of a big upset victory. How does one put the genie back in the bottle? You can't short of widespread acceptance that court storming is a no-no.

Expand full comment

Even some of the talking heads at ESPN say it's accepted for an upset victory. It's what the students want and what "we" want.

Expand full comment

The amount of pearl clutching and No Fun Allowed going on over this! Court storming is a vital part of the student fan experience and should absolutely be preserved. We can and should make it safer but outright banning it is insane.

Expand full comment

Short of putting the players and the court back in a literal cage, as was tried very early in the sport (with more negative results than wanted or expected, than positive ones), or playing without fans (Covid bubbles, no one wants that) I don't know how to completely stop it. If/when thousands of people rush, it would take nearly as many security personnel to stop all of them. Have to find other better ways to manage crowds.

BERKELEY – The California men's basketball team will face Colorado in Boulder on Wednesday night in the first of three consecutive road games to conclude the regular season. Tipoff inside the CU Events Center is slated for 5 p.m. PST/6 p.m. MST and the Pac-12 Network will televise the contest.

i am guessing there is little chance we make it to NCAA tourney. we seem to have a solid winning Pac12 record.

Expand full comment

Would have to sweep the last 3 games, or win 2 & 2 games in the Conference tournament to even be eligible for the post season. Currently 115 in the Net rankings. Zero chance of getting into the NCAA Tournament unless the Bears win the Conference tournament, and the auto bid.

[WSWIM] No. 7 Cal Rolls Into Pac-12 Championships

https://calbears.com/news/2024/2/26/womens-swimming-diving-no-7-cal-rolls-into-pac-12-championships.aspx

The surging No. 7 California women's swimming & diving team will be eyeing a conference title this week when it travels to Federal Way, Washington, for the 2024 Pac-12 Women's Swimming & Diving Championships at Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center.

The Golden Bears are coming off an impressive dual meet victory over No. 5 Stanford that closed out the regular season earlier this month. Cal set four pool records at Spieker Aquatics Complex during the 155.5-144.5 victory and had several student-athletes establish marks that were among the top 10 all-time best in program history.

Similarly, I bought all weather mats for the Miata and kept the original ones. I want to keep them in good condition because I can't find authentic replacements.
