Last week I cracked 70 pushups in one set and 165 over three sets. Not bad for a man of, as of today, sixty-eight years. Working out every other day and long walks on the other days along with a healthy diet keeps me fit for that Cal Rose Bowl appearance which will come when I'm a centenarian.

i recently started doing some strength training w/ a personal trainer. i know her personally but all the sessions are on Zoom. we "meet" once a week and i have 2-3 more workouts the rest of the week.

i was always one of those people that stayed active and assumed i was in good shape because i ride my bike a lot. that is partly true, but i never really lifted weighted any weights of any sort, so this has been something of a new challenge.

maybe one day i'll be able to do a pull up. i think i might have done one, once upon a time, but i generally am super weak in upper body strength.

The owners seem to be under this mistaken impression that they can just have no baseball and expect the sport will be fine. No, this is a critical time for them and they are at major risk of their league becoming irrelevant to the younger generation of fans. The lack of urgency from them is baffling.

Expand full comment
author

The owners clearly do not care about the regular season (the bulk of the money comes from TV and I guess now gambling for the playoffs). The only thing that might temporarily save baseball from a diluted (and more random) playoffs this year is if they do lose some regular season games (so the players won't allow the owners to expand the postseason in 2022).

The entire lack of discussion is frustrating to follow. I am hoping for a miracle now that things could be resolved today.

New York Mayor Eric Adams: Making exception for Brooklyn Nets' Kyrie Irving 'would send wrong message' to other city workers

New York Mayor Eric Adams said Monday that he wants to see Kyrie Irving playing home games at Barclays Center but making an exception for the Brooklyn Nets' unvaccinated star guard "would send the wrong message" to the rest of the city.

Adams made his comments to CNBC and added that he has spoken with Nets owner Joseph Tsai about the issue.

"Listen, I want Kyrie on the court. I would do anything to get that ring. So badly, I want it. But there's so much at stake here. And I spoke with the owner of the team. We want to find a way to get Kyrie on the court, but this is a bigger issue," Adams said in the interview. "I can't have my city closed down again. It would send the wrong message just to have an exception for one player when we're telling countless number of New York City employees, 'If you don't follow the rules, you won't be able to be employed.'"

Annie's missing and likely dead. Sorry to be all #puresilencenews today.

https://sfist.com/2022/02/28/berkeley-falcon-female-disappears/

"Ugh! The drama seemed to have passed and all was back to normal for the bonded pair of peregrine falcons who have been mating and residing atop the UC Berkeley Campanile. But no!

Back in November, the male half of the pair, Grinnell, was injured in an apparent territorial fight with two other falcons. His mate of five years, Annie, started taking up with another male, and the pair appeared to be going through some courtship behavior. But then Grinnell returned within a couple of weeks to the Campanile, and by New Year's he and Annie appeared to be doing the courtship dance again.

Now, though, eight-year-old Annie has mysteriously vanished. With many eyes (and cameras) on this particular falcon nest, falcon watchers tell Berkeleyside that Annie hasn't been around the nest for at least a week. And that absence likely means she was injured in a fight like her mate, or injured or killed while hunting for a meal — which she was often seen doing in downtown Berkeley. [...]"

Freezing the clock: Nationwide push for permanent daylight saving time gains momentum

Maryland lawmakers advance proposal to permanently shift the clock

https://www.washingtonpost.com/dc-md-va/2022/02/28/permanent-daylight-savings-time/

COMMENT - Sure, pushing for year-round DST will be/is very popular right now. But when we get into fall and winter and the sun doesn't rise until after 8:00 AM, people will start to grumble and become grouchy because it stays dark until mid-morning.

I will concede the point that changing the clocks twice a year is folly. I will, however, maintain that year-round Standard Time is the way to go for health and safety reasons.

Expand full comment

I think there's a good argument that year-round DST is good for some locations and Standard for others. So the solution is probably to give each state a chance to choose which one they want to be on and then move forward.

Expand full comment
Mar 1, 2022·edited Mar 1, 2022

Giving states the option of choosing whether to be on DST or Standard Time is bad policy. Such a move balkanizes the United States on who observes DST and who observes Standard Time.

It also goes counter to the Uniform Time Act, which is good policy. The Uniform Time Act says that you can choose to be on Standard Time year-round. If you choose to be on DST at all, you observe DST during the same time as everyone else who observes DST. This way, you do not have this insane patchwork of some folks being on permanent Standard Time and some being on permanent DST. Hence the push for year-round DST at the federal level.

Allowing each state to decide for themselves to be on year-round DST *OR* year-round Standard Time would make it possible that neighboring states in the same nominal time zone would always have one hour of difference between them. Under that scenario it's also possible that two neighboring states in different time zones would have a two hour time difference just by stepping over the border. That's nuts.

Expand full comment

Good in what way? In terms of business, I will concede the point. In terms of health and safety, I doubt it. One of the assertions in the article is that DST costs everyone an average of 19 minutes of shuteye each and every day *during DST*. You never really get that back.

I am inclined to believe the assertion because DST puts sunset closer to bedtime. and so, tends to push bedtime a little later as humans are inclined to stay up a little later with more light.

Expand full comment

But then the problem is you will have patchwork between states and I would think that's worse. Heck I know that in Kentucky you go from Fast time to Slow time (Eastern to Central) driving southbound on I-65. We had a tournament in Southern Ky and we had to clarify it was in a different time zone.

Expand full comment

As you describe, we already have that in some places now. The permanent DST/ST split would just (potentially) put it in different places.

Expand full comment

I think Indiana has some counties that do their own thing as well.

Expand full comment

Indiana's western counties (nominally in Central Time Zone) are on DST while the eastern counties (in Eastern Time Zone) do not. The entire state actually observes the same time during DST because the state legislature decided that it made sense. But this is relatively recent.

There was an episode of West Wing in which the state split between Central and Eastern Time Zones gets a mention (it's when Bartlett is running for re-election and Toby, Josh, and Donna get left behind at a campaign stop).

Expand full comment

the ones near L-ville, Cincy and Chicago

Glad you enjoyed Kashiba. I'm thinking I'll do that again in Apr and maybe again in June. I'll have coworkers in June so I may not convince them to spend for the omakase.

Expand full comment

Leading up to it, we were trying to figure out how much the omakase would be/how it worked, both because a local friend wasn't sure if she wanted to spend that much (I get it; I was on vacation, but she wasn't!) and because I'd never done an omakase before. So, the information we were seeing was that you have to let the chefs know when you're filling up, and then they'll stop feeding you, and how many pieces of sushi you eat determines the total price. That is, someone who eats 15 pieces of sushi will pay less than someone who eats 25 pieces of sushi.

However, this was not the case when we went on Saturday. There was a pre-determined number of pieces, and it was $160/person. You could add on a couple extra pieces and, of course, drinks, for more.

We got in line at 4:00 pm, and there were six people ahead of us. At around 4:45, a staff member came out to check people in and explain how things worked. The first four people in line all wanted the 5:00 seating. The couple immediately in front of us opted to come back later (7:00 and 9:00 both available), so we also got to choose the 5:00 seating. The chef's counter can accommodate 12 people per seating, and is walk-in (aka stand in line) only. Another staff member came out to take our drink orders so they would be ready when we went in.

Chef Shiro was at the very end of the chef's counter, so the first four people got to eat his sushi. My friend and I (and the two people next to us) got the next chef over, but still got to interact with Chef Shiro a bit. The staff told us our chef's name, but unfortunately, I didn't catch it.

We had:

1 tuna hand roll

(3 pieces) salmon flight

(4 pieces) tuna flight

(4 pieces) crustacean flight--ebi nigiri, geoduck, uni, Hokkaido scallop (and they also deep fried the shrimp head, which was delicious)

(4 pieces) white fish flight--I was losing steam here and can't remember the details

maybe also a mackerel flight? or was that part of the white fish flight? egad...

Oh wow...the prices went up. When I was there in 2019 I think it was $85. But also you got more pieces than I did. I think I got 12 and didn't get a hand roll. That's awesome that you got to talk with Chef Shiro.

My chef asked if I wanted a salmon belly after I was done when I told him the Salmon one I got was great. I said yes and was not disappointed.

nice writeup. a good omakase experience is memorable.

both our girls ask for omakase for birthday dinners. my current favorite is one the cheaper ones because it is outside and BYOB.

Sushi on Jones is New York’s first al fresco omakase bar, offering traditional 12-piece tastings in 45 minutes for $58.

Went to Horn BBQ with a friend on Sat. Door open at 11 and we got in line around 10:25. People that got there around 11 didn't get in and order until about 11:50.

The brisket, Pork Hot Link, Mac and Cheese were really good. My friend got the cornbread and I had a taste. It was also really good. It was a bit sweet so it had some honey in it. The Jalapeño and cheese sausage was just alright.

It seems kinda pricey. 1.25 lb of brisket, the two sausages, large Mac and Cheese, cornbread, and 2 cokes were almost $100. But it was good.

Next time we're going to try the Horn fried chicken place just down the street.

Flint's BBQ, that place on Shattuck closed down, right?

Expand full comment

Yeah. They closed down a while ago. I had heard that the owner's daughter wants to reopen it. Maybe doing popups now or is in one of those shared kitchen spaces in Oakland. She had tried to buy the original building but someone else bought it.

Flint's were among the best ribs i have ever had. plus you can't beat the atmosphere of getting yelled at in line and sitting out on the curb eating your food afterwards.

The entertaining at time but ultimately meh Netflix series Wu Assassins got a movie sequel that dropped on Netflix last week with original stars Iko Uwais and Lewis Tan, etc. with new female leads - Fistful of Vengeance is even more ridiculous at times but the fightings are fun with the 90 minutes run time is more perfect than a full season.

Shazam! (4/19 WNB - HBO). It's the Greatest American Hero with a bigger budget and worse writing. It's clearly targeting male pre-teens. Apart from Mark Strong who always plays a really good heavy, it was lame.

I thought this was a lot of fun.

I thought so too. It's not terribly ambitious and succeeds at having fun with what it's trying to do.

Yeah, I mean it's cheesy but it clearly knows it is and that the character is. They lean into it.

I initially thought you were referencing the Shaq movie, but then I realized that was Kazam. I haven't watched Shazam but the theme song can't be better than Greatest American Hero.

lol I also thought to myself "Why did SGBear watch that old Shaq movie...?"

The last time I was in Vegas, ~5 years ago, I stayed at Planet Hollywood and my room contained Kazam movie props. "This is how the 1% live," I thought.

Final episode of 1883 dropped on Paramount Plus...brilliant 1st season.

Believe there is a 2nd season planned but not sure. Highly recommend, even if you don't watch Yellowstone.

Stranger Things season 2-3

i never really watched it the first time around but now my younger daughter is interested and watching ahead of the Season 4 release in May. so i jumped in about halfway thru sesaon 2.

i thought i recall there being more Cold War era politics. but maybe that is still to come.

the 80's music is very well done. the scene of the junior high dance in 1984 is exactly when i experienced those things too ...

Watched a pretty bad movie Saturday night, it was entertaining I guess, had the single most inappropriate score I've ever heard - would have been cool in a Blaxploitation film, but a fantasy set in 13th century Italy? So goofy.

Starring Rutger Hauer, Michelle Pfeiffer & Matthew Broderick? What could this movie be?

LADYHAWKE! what a strange mess 9/19-WOBBoMP.
