According to the Guinness Book of Records, the only verified example of a family producing three consecutive generations born on February 29 is that of the Keogh family. Peter Anthony was born in Ireland on a Leap Day in 1940, while his son, Peter Eric, was born in the UK on February 29, 1964. Peter Eric's daughter, Bethany Wealth, was also a Leap Day baby, born in the UK on February 29, 1996.

Does it make more sense to celebrate on Feb 28 or March 1?

On one hand, you are a February baby. On the other, you were born on the day after Feb 28.

To me it makes more sense to celebrate on February 28 in non-leap years. Your birthday is in February, not March.

But I can see the other perspective, too.

Leaplings are people who were born on February 29. When I was in 2nd grade at Oxford School in Berkeley, I had a classmate whose birthday fell on February 29. Today would be his 16th birthday, which means that he is really 64 years old today.

LEAP DAY

Leap Day usually occurs in presidential election years. I say usually because that doesn't always hold true. Can anyone tell the rest of us the two presidential election years that were not leap years?

Expand full comment

2000 I think is one of those leap years that doesn't happen. Can't remember the other one. It's like every 200 years or 400 years or something like that.

Expand full comment

The rule about leap years is that they happen every four years except in century years (years ending in 00). The exception in century years is when the century year is evenly divisible by 400.

Given those parameters, what two presidential election years were not leap years?

Expand full comment

oh so 1800 and 1900. I guess I had thought the opposite.

Expand full comment

Exactly. 1800 and 1900 were presidential election years that were not leap years. 2000 was a leap year, but 2100 will not be a leap year (assuming we still have presidential election years), and neither will 2200 or 2300.

my previous startup that got acquired last year is doing something of a Leap Day reunion celebration in NYC tonight that i am missing because i just flew off for my ski trip.

i was very tempted to rearrange my trip because of the occasion though. in the end the logistics were too challenging.

i started at the company as the 30th employee and stayed until we were about 200 over the course of the next 3 yrs. i have had fun jobs over the years. this one was definitely a highlight in terms of a good group, good times, and good work. these things never last forever. i am glad to have had a good moment while it was possible.

i am still easily friends and very friendly w/ 50-100 of those people. not that they would have all been there tonight ..

100 years ago - Cal went undefeated, but have two ties (vs. Washington & Stanfurd). Stanfurd ends up going to the Rose Bowl because they have one fewer tie, where they lose to eventual national champ Notre Dame. Cal ends up beating Penn and ends up #2 in the nation.

The tie in the Big Game should have never happened. Cal's extra point try that would have put them up by 15 late in the 4th quarter was called called wide. The Bears complained that it was good, the ball had hooked between the goalposts. The ref told one player, it wouldn't mater because "you're so far ahead." It did matter. Furd got two late TDs to tie it. (There were not 2 point conversations back then.)
