What this portends for fire season is frightening. From a purely Cal standpoint I also worry about home games being postponed due to nearby fires and/or smoke.
Cloudy and showery in the NW, temps in the 50s. The rain should gradually decline as the week goes on, so we may have a mostly dry weekend, but totally soggy ground.
We're in random-number-generator mode in the Mid-Atlantic: highs will be anywhere from the 30s to the 70s. Last week we had mid 70s and ice pellets/freezing rain in back-to-back days.
still hoping for some more snow in VT this season. trying to get up for one last ski trip in the middle of next week. looks at least a little bit promising in what has otherwise been a very disappointing snow season
I dislike them only because of how they are designed by sadists. I have been on so, so many of them. Little kids invariably see it as a popularity contest for which animal they like the most. More often than not, they pick a static one rather than one that goes up and down once the ride starts. As a logical adult, I try to tell them that they should pick one that goes up and down.
Nope. 100% of the time they stick to their guns. The heart wants what it wants.
I warn them that they can't switch once the ride starts. Screw you, old man. You're not the boss of me.
Then the ride starts and you can see the confusion and then envy crawl across their face as they picked the "go round" rather than the "merry" choice. They want to switch mid-ride, which then descends into an inevitable tantrum. Smash-cut five minutes into the future when the child leaves the ride in tears and we're left standing around until a child can calm down enough but left inevitably in a shitty mood.
We have a couple of refurbished old-fashioned carousels in towns in the area, and they have become destinations Everyone loves them, and no one enjoys them more than I do, whether I'm getting to ride, or just watching happy children on them.
Maksim Chmerkovskiy's IG feed has been fascinating. He's a Ukranian dancer who lives in the US and has been one of the main dancers on Dancing with the Stars forever. For the last several months he has been in Kyiv as a judge on their DWTS, so he's been in the city for all of this, and has been posting a lot of stories. He has just left and made it to Poland today, but if you're looking for a lot of raw on the ground footage from within Ukraine it's worth following. https://www.instagram.com/maksimc/?hl=en
Some Russian troops are surrendering or sabotaging vehicles rather than fight, a Pentagon official says.
WASHINGTON — Plagued by poor morale as well as fuel and food shortages, some Russian troops in Ukraine have surrendered en masse or sabotaged their own vehicles to avoid fighting, a senior Pentagon official said on Tuesday.
Some entire Russian units have laid down their arms without a fight after confronting surprisingly stiff Ukrainian defense, the official said. A significant number of the Russian troops are young conscripts who are poorly trained and ill-prepared for the all-out assault. And in some cases, Russian troops have deliberately punched holes in their vehicles’ gas tanks, presumably to avoid combat, the official said.
Just heard that the convoy is stalled. Also, Russian food supplies are reputedly running low. Putin's WWI type strategy may come into question. He thought he was playing Risk, rolling the dice and sending 8 armies into Ukraine.
I saw some reddit posts where people were pushing for attacking the fuel trucks instead of the tanks or infantry vehicles. Without fuel they can't go anywhere.
I'm not sure if this falls under college, pro, or dvd. I got a notice from Verizon yesterday that because of some cancellations of lives sports on regional sports networks I was getting a credit on my cable bill. I honestly can't think of one game I was going to watch that got cancelled or postponed. But I'm not turning down a credit.
There's no dispute about where it was invented. It's that Harvard/MIT first found a way to find a business use for it (it's not quite that simple, but that's the gist).
Not sure there is a precedent for returning or re-awarding Nobel prizes. However, the monetization of the technology will now be removed from Berkeley to Harvard and MIT, and the licensee companies will have to negotiate new terms of use with the Harvard/MIT venture. Certainly bad news for Doudna.
MLBPA player leaders agreed unanimously not to accept MLB's final proposal, and there was no deal on a new collective bargaining agreement before MLB's 5 p.m. ET deadline.
MLB had threatened to cancel its March 31 Opening Day without a new deal, and commissioner Rob Manfred confirmed that Tuesday afternoon.
"The calendar dictates that we're not going to be able to play the first two series of the regular season and those games are officially canceled," Manfred said.
The sides will head home after negotiating for nine days and determine next steps for returning to the bargaining table.
The owners are totally pulling a putin here. Sure they will eventually win and in the short term make up their money in the postseason games but at the cost of long term health and success of MLB.
It’s so frustrating in a negotiation when you get your guys to move in good faith and the other side responds by being schmucks. Makes you feel like a deal is impossible
OKC Dodgers are playing the Rivercats the 3rd week in April. My friend that lives in Sac is going to go to the ticket office when it opens and get us tickets to a couple of games that week.

I took a quick trip to the supermarket to get a couple of things, and I was struck that despite the indoor mask mandate being dropped for the county, the majority of customers were still wearing masks. I find that I'm in "live & let live" on this - I'd not skip the mask, but I'm not going to get riled at people who don't want to wear it now that they don't have to. Life's too short.
At the gym, even though masks are no longer required, there are still people that wear them. I do almost all the time still. The only time I didn't was when I was running for about 15 min and there was no one near me, like within 15+ feet. Maybe that's just wishful thinking though.

Weather
Nearly 3” of rain yesterday in Seattle, the tenth highest total on record. Great day to start biking to work again!
Was lower 70s and sunny yesterday, high 60s today, and then back to low 50s by the end of the week. Chance for rain on Thurs.
Rain? What's that? The Berkeley hills are already turning brown, I'm hoping this rain stuff of which you speak would visit us and reverse that trend.
I don't think there's going to be a lot of it. I think most of it is going to be North of us.

I can't argue against that.

Ah dang, dimes.
It’s unfortunate that the Ukrainian military doesn’t have the jets or multiple MLRS’s to hit that tasty target.
Just heard that the convoy is stalled. Also, Russian food supplies are reputedly running low. Putin's WWI type strategy may come into question. He thought he was playing Risk, rolling the dice and sending 8 armies into Ukraine.
It suddenly occurs to me that Putin is the modern day answer to a reverse Napoleon.
Oh, the irony.
supposedly their supply lines only extend 90 miles, they dont have enough trucks to go past that. smh

Yeah, attacking the fuel trucks makes strategic sense.

Striking Out
Hitting Into the Shift
Getting Dressed Weird.
Speaking of which, I don't like all the "ban the shift" talk.
I don't either. Dudes gotta learn to shorten up or bunt to where they ain't.
If the owners clearly don't give a schitt about the regular season, not sure why we should either, unfortunately.
So we have to assume that the first month of the season is now gone right?
Not necessarily. If they can somehow come to an agreement today, they'll probably be able to get started in April.
Despite last night's "progress," they're still apparently far apart on key issues, with the owners not willing to give much of anything.
Do you really think they will come to agreement today? I give that about a 4% chance of happening.
It’s so frustrating in a negotiation when you get your guys to move in good faith and the other side responds by being schmucks. Makes you feel like a deal is impossible

OKC is the Dodgers AAA affiliate now? It made more sense when they were with the Rangers. I can't remember where the Dodgers AAA used to be...
Maybe Albuquerque Dukes? Then I think it moved to Las Vegas. I know they had an Albuquerque and Vegas farm team but I don't know if it was AAA or not.

Are they both vaxed? Glad to hear the symptoms are very minor.
IIRC they took some sort of experimental vaccine the NHS was trying out, but given local policies I doubt they got a booster shot. I didn't ask, to be honest, given that they seem to have had mild cases. My other cousin had it last year, along with his daughter - it was never clear if it came from his part time health care work, his general tomfoolery, or his idiot ex passing it along via their daughter.
