You guys. I RETIRED TODAY! 🎉🎈🍾

FiatSlug's avatar

Congrats, Scootie!

I hope you enjoy it fully!

dcblue's avatar

Yay! Congrats and welcome to the team.

Whoo-hoo! Your avatar is so young! ;-)

Now you’ll have time to start posting here again, more often!

i like sleep. try to get a good amount of rest in general which allows me to go in short stretches w/o much sleep if necessary.

FiatSlug's avatar

Y'all are going to lose an hour next Sunday. March 9 is the start of Daylight Saving Time (DST) in the United States, except for Arizona and Hawaii.

As everyone here probably knows, I do not like DST. I wish California would go to year-round Standard Time.

sycasey's avatar

It should start in April. This is too early for DST.

FiatSlug's avatar

Yup.

By my reckoning, DST shouldn't start before April 1. That's about 3 to 4 weeks later than what it is now.

AndyPanda's avatar

Cannot come too soon. Wish we would stay DST year around.

FiatSlug's avatar

What's so great about DST? It's only a time shift. You could do the same thing just by getting up an hour earlier in the morning.

Sunrises from Memorial Day to July 4th are very close to each other, falling between 4:46 AM and 4:51 AM on Pacific Standard Time in the Bay Area. For Seattle, it's between 4:11 AM and 4:19 AM between the same two dates. So sunrises on Daylight Saving Time (DST) would be shifted one hour later.

But here's the kicker - If you had year-round DST, sunrises in the Bay Area would fall between 8:00 AM and 8:25 AM from November 25 through February 13. That's 81 days of sunrises at or after 8:00 AM.

For Seattle, the comparable measure would be 8:29 AM to 8:58 AM between the same two dates.

Sunrises after 8:00 AM would start on November 5 and end February 23, a total of 111 days.

I'd think anyone living in the Northern Tier of the US wouldn't want such late sunrises.

AndyPanda's avatar

My getting up even earlier in the morning will NOT get the rest of the world to do so. An extra hour of daylight at a time when it will be more useful (read after most work and school days are over) is much more useful than another hour of daylight at a time most won't make use of.

FiatSlug's avatar

What's the diff? All you've done is make a time shift either way.

We could avoid a spike in heart attacks (24% increase) and stroke (8% increase) because of the forced time shift.

Here’s your wake-up call: Daylight saving time may impact your heart health

https://newsroom.heart.org/news/heres-your-wake-up-call-daylight-saving-time-may-impact-your-heart-health

And we can also avoid a disruption in sleep patterns by not forcing a time shift twice a year. As it is, Americans are sleep deprived. It is even worse in the days and weeks that follow the shift from Standard Time to DST. The shift to DST is like forced jet lag on everyone, resulting in grogginess and fragmentation of the circadian rhythm.

Scootie's avatar

I would take 200 8 AM sunrises to avoid 10 pre-5AM ones!

FiatSlug's avatar

Are you a night owl? If you are, I can see why you would prefer to avoid pre-5 AM sunrises.

What college team has the most appropriate mascot?

Justbear's avatar

California Golden Bears

SGBear's avatar

Navy

They are literally all Midshipmen - the lowest rank in the navy as junior officers in training

Matt's avatar

For a sport-specific team, I'd nominate the baseball team from Long Beach State: The Dirtbags

FiatSlug's avatar

UC Santa Cruz. The mascot, the banana slug, is indigenous to the campus (ariolimax dolichophallus).

Oski Disciple's avatar

Easier to do inappropriate. SF State being Gators is ridiculous given the paucity of alligators in the bay. Also, why the hell are Long Beach State the 49ers?

Oregon and Oregon State have apt mascots as does Texas.

SGBear's avatar

Historically, San Francisco State was the "Staters" or "Golden Gaters". So Gaters --> Gators.

Justbear's avatar

UCI Anteaters. They should be more like UCI Suburbans

CruzinBears's avatar

Does the UC system have the most random assortment of mascots of all the state systems?

Aggies, Bears, baby bears, Banana Slugs, Gauchos, Bobcats, Anteaters, Highlanders and Tritons

FiatSlug's avatar

If Oregon, Oregon State, and Texas are examples of apt mascots, it doesn't get any more apt than a school that has designated indigenous flora or fauna as its mascot.

FiatSlug's avatar

Doesn't that depend on the use of the word "appropriate"?

Asking for some friends.

James Harrison - a different one from the Super Bowl winning linebacker with the Steelers - has passed away at the age of 88. He was one of the rare people who have an Anti-D antibody, which protects the fetus from a disorder that occurs when it has a different blood type than its mother. He has protected 2.4m people.

Michael Kim with another good tournament though he played mediocre on Sunday. For February he had two top tens and two other with tied for 13th. That’s a pretty good month with more than one and a half million in winnings.

I've cut the check to start the process to get my Portuguese citizenship in 3-5 years. It looks like I'm retiring in Europe. This means there will be several monthly stints where I will be posting the DBD from probably Lisbon or Cascais.

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

this is amazing. my wife and kids had UK passports, but not enough for EU rights anymore.

Trump tells Americans

"we should spend less time worrying about Putin, and more time worrying about [brown people] entering our country - so that we don't end up like Europe!"

That makes no sense. He's saying don't worry about the guy who is making things bad in Europe so that we don't end up like Putin and his victims.

This direction/action has been one of the top 3 most alarming actions for 2025.

SGBear's avatar

If you think prices are high now, wait until tariffs kick in tomorrow for goods from Canada & Mexico (25%) and China (10%). Also, the $800 deminimus gets removed and there already is a 10%-25% tariff on Chinese goods above the de minimis. This means a lot of Chinese goods are rising at least 20% - which is nearly everything.

As the measles outbreak spreads and the Trump administration feels the fallout, RFK Jr bizarrely reverses part of his policies on vaccines. Do his brainworms get tired from all the mental gymnastics he contorts himself into?

Anora was my favorite so I am happy!

I do feel a bit bad for Demi Moore though. IMO both of those performances were neck-and-neck as the best lead actress.

SGBear - all ok your way with the wildfires? We had alerts late last week in northern Virginia because the conditions were good for fires but I’m not aware of any problems.

SGBear's avatar

I sold my lakehouse last week, so I no longer have to worry about that.

It’s time once again for Oski Disciple’s Question of the Day. ((Note: this series of Oski Disciple’s Question of the Day concludes on Friday so get your answers in while there's still time.)

We’re often told not to hesitate if we have any questions. Wouldn’t you rather someone hesitated? Maybe they’ll realize it was a dumb question or they’ll figure out the answer before bothering you. What the hell is wrong with hesitating?

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

i am not hesitating. maybe the point is to get the raw dumb question to see what the lowest level is like?

AndyPanda's avatar

Losing? There is the saying "He who hesitates is lost."

Wiata78's avatar

I’m going to think it over for a while before I reply.
