Been working my way through this nasty chest cold I've had since last Thurs. In the coughing up phlegm/post nasal drip stage. So my appetite hasn't been great since end of last week. Probably a roast beef sandwich on Ciabatta with leftover roast beef from French Dip we made over the weekend. With lettuce, tomato, avocado, mayo, and provolone. Dinner will probably be the leftover El Farolito burrito I bought 2 nights ago after dropping No 3 off at SFO for a red-eye.

Wiata78's avatar

What about chicken soup for that cold? Or maybe albondigas soup?

heyalumnigo's avatar

Maybe earlier. tbb suggested congee. I guess I could've over the weekend or earlier in the week but now I think I'm pretty close to being over it.

Wiata78's avatar

Speaking of congee, I've always called it jook, which is what my mother always called it in Cantonese. According to wikipedia, congee derives from Tamil. I suppose the Tamil version (never tried it) is different from the Canto version.

heyalumnigo's avatar

I know my mom always called it xǐ fàn (literally "diluted rice"). I know restaurants use congee but I don't think it's mandarin either.

Mrs Slug has been battling a bug for about 1 week and is now in a similar stage. Not a cold though, in that she's been running a mild fever. and hasn't had the usual runny nose and/or congestion.

heyalumnigo's avatar

Weird. Someone said that I might have the flu, but I haven't really had the body aches. More just weary. I don't think I've had a fever, but if I did it was really low. Not sure what it is but it's lingering whatever it is.

FiatSlug's avatar

Strangely, I haven't contracted whatever she has from her. Probably because I spend most of my days away from the house at work.

heyalumnigo's avatar

No 3 left to visit his GF on Tues night so when I was in the car with him or at the Cal game on Sat night I wore my mask. Wasn't coughing over the weekend so I didn't wear it when I wasn't near him in the house.

FiatSlug's avatar

That's very considerate of you to protect others.

I've been taking to wearing my mask on BART so I don't pick up anything and pass it along to Mrs Slug.

Trying to think of the biggest Cal FB massacre I've been witness to. Thinking against good teams, not someone like UOP 91. Maybe Citrus Bowl against Clemson. Maybe USC 91.

BIg Game 1975, 48-15. Could easily have cracked 50 but White put the backups in.

FiatSlug's avatar

Would have liked to see that one. That was during my time in New Jersey.

Wiata78's avatar

It was awesome! My favorite memory is when Chuck Muncie threw a halfback pass to Wesley Walker.

FiatSlug's avatar

I would have especially liked to see that. Especially that.

U$C '91 was the most satisfying of my time. WSU '17 also comes to mind (the smoke game).

heyalumnigo's avatar

Unfortunately I missed most of the games between 04 and 18 when I moved back.

sycasey's avatar

In terms of the "biggest" (and leaving out games against FCS patsies), it was probably Washington in '08, when Jahvid Best broke the single-game Cal rushing record. The Huskies never stood a chance in that one.

ICE Barbie has been fired. Apparently, Sen. Markwayne Mullin (R-OK) will be nominated to succeed her. Mullin may be an improvement. He still comes off as a f**kwit.

Boston Celtics superstar Jayson Tatum is expected to make his 2025-26 NBA season debut against the Dallas Mavericks on Friday night at TD Garden, sources told ESPN's Shams Charania on Thursday.

Browns' Myles Garrett gets ninth speeding ticket since 2017

https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/48105101/browns-myles-garrett-gets-ninth-speeding-ticket-2017

Cleveland Browns defensive end Myles Garrett, the reigning NFL Defensive Player of the Year, was issued a citation for speeding after he was clocked going 94 mph in a 70 mph zone on the interstate in Northeast Ohio last month, according to court records.

It is Garrett's ninth speeding ticket since entering the league in 2017.

FiatSlug's avatar

It seems that Ohio has a rolling two-year period in which your record could land you in hot water. If an Ohio driver accumulates 12 points in a 2-year period, their license could be suspended for up to 6 months.

Point Values for Common Violations

2 Points: Minor speeding (over 10 MPH on roads ≥55 MPH or over 5 MPH on roads <55 MPH) and other minor moving violations.

4 Points: Major moving violations such as speeding 30 MPH or more over the limit.

6 Points: Severe offenses including driving without consent, driving with a suspended license, evading police, causing injury or death, and OVI/DUI convictions.

Based on espn.com's reporting, I think he has accumulated at most 6 points in two years. So, he gets a warning letter, but he can continue to drive. Nonetheless, I'll expect to read about another speeding violation about 1 year from now.

Andy Pages, Dalton Rushing shine, Dodgers top Mexico

Included in the Dodgers’ 7-5 win over Mexico in Wednesday’s exhibition at Camelback Ranch were a few performances that can’t help but be viewed with an eye toward the regular season.

Each of Andy Pages’ seven previous starts this spring were in center field, so he got to stay off his feet a bit on Wednesday as the designated hitter. Pages followed the assignment to a tee with a home run and double in his first two at-bats.

[BASE] Bears Rout Roadrunners, Win 7th Straight

https://calbears.com/news/2026/3/4/baseball-bears-rout-roadrunners-win-7th-straight.aspx

BERKELEY— The bats came out to play for the California baseball team on Wednesday as the Golden Bears routed CSU Bakersfield 15-6 at Stu Gordon Stadium in Berkeley. Eight of the Bears' starters collected a hit and seven notched multi-hit efforts in the Bears' highest scoring effort of the season.

Strut’88's avatar

Great showing by the Bears at the plate, and good starting pitching. Horrible TV coverage. The young announcer was cool, though relatively inexperienced. But the lack of replay, the reliance on one single, occasionally wobbly behind the plate camera and no others, makes Cal’s home telecasts one of the worst, visually, of any collegiate program’s video coverage. This is the second year in a row that this is the case. Why??

[MBB] Cal Pushes Past Georgia Tech 76-65 In Atlanta

https://calbears.com/news/2026/3/4/mens-basketball-cal-pushes-past-georgia-tech-76-65-in-atlanta.aspx

ATLANTA -- The California men's basketball team changed gears in the second half to fight back and beat host Georgia Tech 76-65 tonight in Atlanta. John Camden had a double-double and Lee Dort scored a career-high 16 points, but it was Dai Dai Ames scoring all 18 of his team-high points in the second half that anchored the road win for the Golden Bears. Cal is now 21-9 overall and 9-8 in ACC play, while the Yellow Jackets go to 11-19, 2-15.

heyalumnigo's avatar

Madsen must have lit into them at halftime. They started defending and not settling for 3s. Got inside for buckets and also drove and dished to the open 3s later in the second half.

AndyPanda's avatar

Or just made effective adjustments.

heyalumnigo's avatar

Maybe. But some of the defensive issues looked like effort. Man, Bell is such a bad defender for someone as quick as he is.

OskiOfTarth's avatar

Speaking of Cal, our son is doing stats for the Cal Poly men's team (fun scheme, 2nd fastest offense in the country) . Now a fan of both Cal's (the missus is an alum) the two Cals are having such parallel seasons (different level of ball of course, lots of shooting talent, lots of poor on-court decisions). After games, Coach Mike DeGeorge gives a short interview and the essence of every one is along the lines of 'if they'd only run the offense, we'd win those games'. Madsen must feel the same. A lot of 1 on 4 vs Pitt & in the 1st half vs GT. Perhaps he just reminded them at halftime of the hours spent learning the offense, why not put it to use. They executed much better in the 2nd half.

Newellbany's avatar

Nobody wants a coach from the Lou Campinelli school of halftime locker room yelling, but agree with HAG that coaches have to call out poor effort.

Madsen does make adjustments, which is high on my list of signs of good coaching.

[WBB] Cal Handles Wake Forest To Advance In ACC Tournament

https://calbears.com/news/2026/3/4/womens-basketball-cal-handles-wake-forest-to-advance-in-acc-tournament.aspx

DULUTH, GA -- It was a tight game up until midway through the second quarter when the California women's basketball team ended the half on a 17-4 run to take control and not look back in a 75-52 win over Wake Forest in the first round of the ACC Tournament at Gas South Arena in Duluth, Georgia on Wednesday afternoon. Golden Bears (19-13, 9-9 ACC) head coach Charmin Smith earned her 100th career victory as Cal outrebounded the Demon Deacons (14-17, 4-14) 41-28 and just 37.5% from the field. Cal is now 2-1 all-time at the ACC Tournament.
