Jakarta is one of the few places I didn't even try to run. I didn't even feel all that comfortable walking from the hotel to the embassy. Traffic was crazy.

I have tried to travel to Indonesia 4 times in my life. 4 times, I have had to cancel my trip - anti Chinese violence (May 1998), anti American violence (sometime around 1999), work scheduling got moved (Feb 2007), Covid (May 2020)

I think technically only an animal from N Africa, with our natives being Bison. Whatever the case, I like the little herd in GG Park, so random. Used to run by them all the time when I lived in panhandle.

Justbear's avatar

I learned that recently. I saw Bison in Kentucky and learned that they are bison and not buffalo.

GoldenSD81's avatar

He was actually pretty good at Buffalo and I was excited he was transferring to Cal due to his experience and performance with Buffalo.

Justbear's avatar

He was still better than anyone else we had on the roster, so I think it was a good move to get him, even if it was only to get Keenan Allen here.

Now I do hope Sam Jackson is better than Maynard.

The History Channel gives considerable credit for the invention of Buffalo Wings to a Black restauranteur named John Young, who opened Wings and Things in Buffalo, New York, rather than to the Bellissimo family.

“I was selling 5,000 pounds of chicken wings in 1962,” Young told The Courier-Express in a 1981 article. “Mr. Bellissimo used to come into my place and eat my chicken wings.”

https://www.history.com/news/who-invented-buffalo-wings

https://www.history.com/shows/the-food-that-built-america/season-4/episode-3

The Food that Built America episode also gives a lot of credit for chicken wing popularity to Hooter's.

Vincent Gallo, Christina Ricci, very funny

I sure have and I enjoyed it. Good ol’ Prince Vince, not as controversial as The Browm Bunny.

Wild Wings. I’ve never been before.

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

i find most wings to be all about the same. never great, never terrible, just wings.

and the sauce is some differentiating thing, but because i dont eat much spicy food i usually require a giant pile of celery and ranch or blue cheese to be able to eat more than one.

heyalumnigo's avatar

Buffalo wings are fine, but I like the other ones better. Like maybe a dry rub, like Memphis style. Or the asian ones.

Safeway sometimes has $5/lb wings on Fridays. They have a really good salt and vinegar one.

GoldenSD81's avatar

I prefer Asian over Buffalo.

heyalumnigo's avatar

I love the Asian Zing flavor at B-Dubs. But yeah, asian wings like Bonchon are better than buffalo.

My friends have a band headquartered in Saratoga Springs, NY called Sirsy...a wife/husband team that rocks, she on the drums/vocals, he on the guitar. She busts out the flute for multiple songs.

They hit the road in their van twice a year tho, and play all over, including CA. Check them out...one of their songs was featured on Shameless, and they get airtime in the 518. Wonder if Jim Knowlton ever saw them when he was at RPI....

g.oso's avatar

None. I mooch everything

g.oso's avatar

The former Mrs and I still share Netflix and Hulu, which she pays for. The lady friend added me to her YouTube Tv acct. I get Disney and ESPN+ free through Verizon, and all the movies channels (HBOMAX, Showtime, Starz) I get through my sister.

g.oso's avatar

Oh, and I bet the Pac12 network through the generosity of someone on this board

heyalumnigo's avatar

Netflix.

I get HBO/Showtime from having cable, and sharing those with the family. They also use the cable login to get TNT/ESPN/Fox/TBS, to watch sports on their TV.

Although if Netflix out of house verification gets tedious or they charge for out of house members I'm cancelling.

Also I have MLB.TV which is provided with T-Mobile.

SGBear's avatar

Four: HBO, Hulu, Prime, Netflix

Berkelium97's avatar

Netflix, Amazon video/music, Peacock (got it on sale for a year). I think that's all... We also have HBO Max, but it's included since we pay for HBO with our tv bill.

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

all of the them! in reality it is probably 5-7 and i borrow several others.

i guess i wont have to borrow HAG's pac12 stream anymore if that goes away.

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

ones i can remember ... YouTubeTV, FloBikes, GlobalCyclingNetwork, Disney, Paramount (CBS), Peacock (NBC), HBO, NBA League Pass, Amazon Prime

do fitness apps count? ... Equinox/SoulCycle (actual live streams of workouts)

borrow .. Netflix, Pac12

DC Trojan's avatar

Netflix, Paramount +, ESPN +, Hulu, Disney Plus, Peacock (caught a sale), BritBox.

We get HBOMax through our AT&T mobile plan, and Amazon via our prime subscription.

I also have a family plan for Apple One that includes Apple TV and Apple Music.

I suppose technically speaking we could count our cable tv package in here too

O.Overall's avatar

HBO, Netflix, Disney. I don’t count Amazon as I get prime for other reasons, or Hulu, which came free w signing up for Spotify some yonks back

Terence's avatar

Apple TV (it came with my iPhone but I assume I paid for it somewhere), Disney/Hulu bundle, Amazon Prime, Peacock.

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

Netflix, Amazon Prime, Peacock, AppleTV, MLBTV, plus Cox cable which gives me HBOMax and Showtime Anytime. Too f-ing much....

Mooch: Paramount +, Hulu, Disney

FiatSlug's avatar

YouTube TV

HBO Max

Netflix

Amazon Prime

BritBox

Acorn

I would love to ditch YouTube TV since it is easily the most expensive. But, believe it or not, Mrs Slug insists that we still need ESPN and the NBC Sports channels. Given that the MLB regular season and the NBA Playoffs are fast approaching, I am at a disadvantage in making a counter argument.

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

YouTube TV is gonna have the NFL Sunday Ticket begging this fall, apparently, so if that's your thing.....

Oski Disciple's avatar

Criterion Channel, Netflix, Hulu, HBO, Apple +, and for proper football (soccer to you Yanks) Peacock, Paramount Plus and ESPN plus.

GoldenSD81's avatar

I pay for the following:

D+/ESPN+/Hulu bundle

Apple TV+ (first year was free because we bought a new iPad, we now pay)

Peacock (got it on sale for $20 for a year)

Netflix (it is part of my T-Mobile cell phone package)

Amazon Prime

We borrow logins for:

HBO Max

Spotify

West Virginia votes against bill to raise marriage age from 16 to 18, voting along party lines.

Kanawha County Republican Sen. Mike Stuart, a former federal prosecutor who sided with the majority, said his vote “wasn’t a vote against women.” He said his mother was married when she was 16, and “six months later, I came along. I’m the luckiest guy in the world.”

I had an unhappy experience with an unsubscribe request.

A Big Give email inspired me to unsubscribe. I'm not feeling charitable in light of the state of the Athletic Department and what I feel is Chancellor Christ's (and the administration's) indifference towards revenue sports.

Therefore, I chose to unsubscribe. Then they wanted to know why. I chose Other. When you choose Other, the form asks for your reason, to which I tried responding, "Cal’s administration and Athletic Dept. leadership has demonstrated that athletics is irrelevant to the University."

That's 115 characters, including spaces. The form flashed that the response contained an invalid field length or some such nonsense. So, I made it valid. I simply responded, "Fuck off."

I really don't like that response, either. So I wrote to updates@go.calbears.com to explain my terse and vulgar response. And now I'm still grumpy because I dislike being nasty and confrontational.

Yes, I've had my coffee.

GoldenSD81's avatar

I got that same Big Give email and was completely turned off by the unfortunate timing of sending it out right after we lost yesterday and after the football and bball seasons we just had.

FiatSlug's avatar

Didn't Knowlton also ask for money after the loss to Colorado or some other nasty football game loss? These guys have the timing and the tone deafness of an old man yelling at the clouds.

GoldenSD81's avatar

Has Mark Fox been fired yet?

heyalumnigo's avatar

I had dinner with my friend and his parents, big donors. We talked Cal BB. He said he would like Dennis Gates, but would probably be impossible. He said he thought it would be hard to get a good coach without a practice facility. I said the blog threw out Pasternack and the San Jose State HC. He said he didn't like Pasternack with the way he seems to treat the players and doesn't seem to have a good attitude. And the Jorge trip. I said I thought they should do a G5 up and comer like Ben Braun was.

First year they hadn't used their BB tickets for various reasons. Said next year they'll start going again but I got first dibs on the tickets they couldn't go to. I said this was the first year I didn't go to any games since moving back and I was OK with that. Didn't miss much.

goldenone's avatar

I just hope it's a creative hire. Bottom line is don't hire a retread who can't adjust to today's game and recruit.

FiatSlug's avatar

Bottom line is don't leave your revenue sports hires up to consultants. If you can't perform this essential task, you need to form a committee of interested major donors and get the fuck out of the way.

That is all.

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

I've come around on Pasternack...the job is a disaster, and the applicant pool does not figure to be deep with quality options.

A retread would be a death knell. The program needs a jolt of energy!

Justbear's avatar

Watch Knowlton pulls of a miracle and brings Monty out of the retirement

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

Honestly, not sure Monty helps this program now. The cupboard is basically empty, he doesn’t recruit, and he’s clearly not keen on the NIL.

Cuonzo would maybe help more, if we’re talking former Cal HCs returning….

Justbear's avatar

I meant it would be the worst thing ever.

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

I'll be shocked if it's today, and surprised if it is even tomorrow.

Knowlton is useless and does nothing with urgency. If he didn't fire him during this season, he is clearly not in a rush. He'll take time to evaluate the program, as he says....hopefully by next week.

But the firing is only the first step....Knowlton has to have some plan in place, otherwise the disaster will likely continue.

****UPDATED****

Happy to be shocked!!

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

I actually am. I think so little of Knowlton and while I hoped he would, I honestly did not expect him to actually pull the plug so soon, given that he let him hang around all season. Glad he did and it is a good start, but again, he is so overmatched in his current position that I still remain skeptical.

heyalumnigo's avatar

I can't remember if there was financial incentive to wait until the end of the season. Anyone remember what his contract said?

Justbear's avatar

Maybe not in Fox's contract, but hiring someone mid season means you have to hire and pay a new coach

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

I don't believe so, no. The contract he signed in 2019 stipulated that Fox would be paid a base salary of $275,000 per year, plus a talent fee.

Year One: $1.5 million

Year Two: $1.575 million

Year Three: $1.65 million

Year Four: $1.725 million

Year Five: $1.8 million

If Fox is terminated without cause, here’s how much the university will owe him:

Year One: 100% of the base salary and talent fee for the remainder of the contract year in which the termination occurs.

Year Two: 100% of the base salary and talent fee for the next contract year

Year Three: 75% of the base salary and talent fee for the next contract year

Year Four: 50% of the base salary and talent fee for the next contract year

Year Five: 25% of the base salary and talent fee for the next contract year

Any way you slice it, this looks like year 4, whether that was December 2022, January 2023 or March 2023...

So it appears to be a buyout of 50% of $1.8M, or $900K, whenever it was done, UNLESS year 5 started when the 2022-2023 season ended, which I do not think is how they work it.
