On toasted sourdough bread (just butter), or sprinkled with cinnamon sugar.

there are many great ways and reasons to eat a bunch of butter. on a toasted piece of Irish soda bread is one of the best. (that was my breakfast)

this time of year many of the local grocery stores sell fresh made soda bread. i figure i'll make some soupy thing for dinner tonight to go with it.

Fresh sourdough bread is my go to.

you can certainly get decent sourdough here on the east coast, but it is not quite the same as the SF style and not nearly so ubiquitous.

I have butter with my pancakes in the morning. Often, Mrs. Slug makes pancakes on Sunday mornings. An important ingredient is whey from making yogurt. Enough pancakes are typically made that I can have 4 pancakes each morning, Monday through Thursday and the alternating Friday when I do work.

In case anyone is wondering, one gallon of whole milk yields close to 1.5 quarts of whey.

given my unemployed status (from FT work)i signed up to teach 2 classes next semester (summer) instead of my normal 1 class.

it does not actually take that much time, but i am sure it will feel like a lot more than an extra 90 min of work. in fact the thing that gets to me the most is having to be at a certain place at a certain every week in a very rigid way, especially since everything else in life is so malleable right now.

that being said, maybe the little bit of structure will help figure out how best to fill in the gaps.

thx for the nudge. the chicken salad was good.

my secret ingredient is a chicken salad is a splash of rice wine vinegar which pairs well w/ the salt, pepper, and celery.

In Asia, if I read the DBD from the previous day, commenting on it seems pointless. I guess I could do the initial seed, but by then it's dinnertime local time. At least in Europe I can seed the DBD and participate for a little but until the end of the testing event which ends at 6 PM local time.

His stated strategy is to bring manufacturing back to the US. But that would take years to accomplish, even with incentives to rebuild the manufacturing base. Nobody in a position to move large amount of capital is going to jump just because protectionist tariffs have been put in place. And it will take months, if not years, to refurbish and refit factories that have fallen into disuse.

In the meantime, the economy will tank. This is insane nonsense.

Expand full comment
sycasey's avatar

I also don't think any company wants to invest to rebuild US manufacturing when the strategy seems so inconsistent: the tariffs are on, then they're off, then they're on again. You can't plan a business around that.

and the one thing that everyone agreed should be made in the US, computer chips, seems to be getting a bad look from Trump.

it is not clear if it is that he thinks it is bad, or just wants to trash anything successful that Biden might have done.

Ugh, the stupid just keeps on coming. Trump wants to trash everything that Biden has done because he's a petty, evil man. I think that's the basis for why Trump thinks something is bad.

heading to Canada next week for presumably the last ski trip of the year. it should be a good one.

flying to Calgary and spending a couple days, a night at Banff and a warm up day of skiing.

then a night at Golden BC and a day of heli skiing w/ my older one who is flying out for the week. first time w/ the helicopters. i expected to be completely out of breath trying to ski such long runs.

the 5 nights at Revelstoke w/ older one, her roommate, and the 2 dads.

A’s lose again, fall to Diamondbacks 5-2

https://www.athleticsnation.com/2025/3/12/24384484/as-lose-again-fall-to-diamondbacks-5-2

The A’s lost again on Wednesday afternoon, losing to the Arizona Diamondbacks 5-2 in front of the home crowd.

Right-hander Osvaldo Bido got the ball to start today’s game. It’s been a tough spring for him so far so he needed a quality outing today. He gave that to them and then some, pitching five innings while allowing just a pair of runs. Bido is still in contention for that fifth starter’s role as of now and he certainly helped his case today.
