I'm 4/7 of the way through season 2. It's mostly enjoyable (although I can't help but feel like that characters' abilities fluctuate to fit the plot...I know it's a comedy). It took me a while to remember what had happened in season 1.
GROSZ: Isn't there also the reason that you quoted from a website called Bear Insider because there's a bear that's running for governor?
SAGAL: Well, there wasn't so much a bear. There are a lot of interesting people on the ballot. Caitlyn Jenner - you may remember her from her reality show - she's running. There is a guy who became famous as a YouTube investment guru. And there is a guy who campaigned for governor with a live bear.
GROSZ: Oh, that's what it was.
SAGAL: Right.
BLOTNICK: I mean, the concept of a YouTuber governor is bone-chilling to me.
I'm having some car issue currently. Drove my car on icy highway last weekend where I spun out even at low speed and hit the barrier (I was totally fine but cracked the headlight and my driver's door can't open most of the way). Took it to a body shop where they estimated that my 2007 Yaris might not be worth fixing. Filed a claim (had to be my fault for I guess choosing to drive in bad weather) with my insurance for the first time, and it's been a slow process (I also don't have rental nor really a need to drive but still). I'm pretty sure this is covered by my collision insurance?
Yes, that will be covered by the collision component of your insurance. The insurance company will decide whether to cover the repairs or whether to total the car and send you a check for the value of the vehicle. In any case, you'll only be responsible for the cost of your deductible.
Yeah, it's not just the door but at least two parts between the front and the side. That's why the bodyshop guy was saying that it will cost a bit of money (and to get the insurance company involved). Unfortunately, the damage is more than just cosmetic/aerodynamics even if the wheel area may be okay.
I do kind of wonder how much my insurance will go up to compensate for the coverage this time.
Some surprisingly old vehicles there. Dodge stopped production of the Dakota over a decade ago, GMC/Chevy haven't made the Sonoma/S-series since 2004, and Ford hasn't made the Contour since 2000.
I'm the WRX driver leading the charge to counter the hooligan stereotype: no tickets (not even a parking ticket) and never been pulled over despite driving one in bright, arrest-me red.
Ugh...I spent 4 hours yesterday afternoon detailing my Miata for a Rally on Sat in Sonoma. And then when I go to start it back up, I hear lifter tick. I had started it a few times to bring it into the garage and out to wash a few times. Didn't happen until the last start. I'm going to get a gallon of Rotella T6 diesel oil as other Miata drivers have had success getting rid of it since it has more detergent. Going to put it in this afternoon and see if it fixes it.
From what I've read it's safe to drive with it so I may still go with No 3 on the drive if it isn't fixed. The drive is a drive for 98 and older Japanese cars, with some allowed special newer cars like R34 Skylines and other special cars like that.
Sounds like the lifter tick is due to buildup/deposits on the lifters?
I'm wondering when I'll need to have my valves cleaned. Since my WRX is only direct injected (rather than port and direct injected), carbon builds up on the backside of the valves over time. I'm near 80k miles and I haven't noticed much of a difference in performance, but I have noticed a slight dip in mpg over time (from the low 31s to the high 29s).
Yeah I think it's buildup in the hydraulic lifters. Not looking forward to figuring out how to fix it if using Rotella doesn't fix it. BTW, No 1 said that STI drivers use Rotella in them as well, due to the higher detergent keeping it cleaner.
What sucks is my TSX has a leaking power steering pump. I had ordered the parts and a new PS tank online and they were waiting for the tank. I told them to just cancel the tank and ship me all the parts and I'm going to try to replace all the seals. It was only like 45 for the seals so worst case if I can't rebuild it I'll have to spend 250-350 on a new one.
Yeah, I'm hoping a bunch hit the secondary market in a couple of years when folks get bored of riding or realize they have no more space in their garages.
I change my phone so infrequently that I didn't realize that they switched model on how they do "free phones" now. Instead of a contract with a service, it's more of the ability to pay (and have any trade-in discounts) with your bill over the next 2 years. Spreading the cost of a $800 phone over 2 years does make it feel more affordable.
I used to buy phones outright in part to get unlocked phones. So far as I can tell, the only cost subsidy for phones comes from mobile companies trying to capture churn - I have an all iPhone household & no prospective benefit from switching service providers, so now I just put the phones on a no-interest payment plan with Apple & give it no further thought
There are metal detectors now at memorial. Best way so far has been to roll a few up in a sweatshirt, place them in an approved clear plastic bag, along with some unopened bottles of water. The water being the decoy for the weight of the bag. And there are plastic flasks that look like sun tan bottles. I usually fill those up with whiskey. They never question it.
I spent a few months on Guam. They had their equivalent of major league baseball. In addition to nice weather every night, the $1 beers were a big part of the draw.
I try to keep an open mind about various beers, but yeah, not generally my cup of tea (or beer) - I had a Berliner - a crisp wheat beer where you but a tiny amount of raspberry (I think) jam at the bottom of the glass and then pour the beer over it - it was ok I guess.

I'm just gonna have to give you enough rope until you wear yourself out. Then I'll reel you back in." Or some other words to the same effect.
Most people alive today weren't alive in '73-'74, I'd guess. If the majority had been alive in '73-'74 there might be a pause and not a seeming rush to get this done. I guess some folks have to learn what some of us are old enough to remember.
I'm waiting for the backlash sometime around the end of next January.
I was alive and kicking but cannot recall it. But then again, the time change thing little bothered me until the past few years with all the hype about it then I became "more sensitive to it" - the power of mass suggestion.
I do remember the gas price jump. The very first tank of gas put in my first car, after being cut loose from parents car and their credit card, was when it became up close and personal. $0.49/gal and I whined quite a bit about it.
I am in the minority here, but I like having standard in the winter and daylight in the summer. Like everyone else, I loathe the transition to DST. I still like the idea of shifting ahead in two, half hour increments a month apart. Seems like that would solve the problem, no?
No. It's the act of time shifting as well as the resulting drag on our bodies that is at issue here.
I like the idea of Standard Time in the months with less daylight and DST in months with more daylight. And history gives us some clues on how to make it work.
When Mrs Slug and I were married in 1986, the weekend we chose for our wedding was influenced by DST. The last Sunday in April was the weekend for the shift. We chose the weekend before so that folks traveling from out of state (mostly my side) wouldn't have to contend with jet lag AND the change from Standard Time to DST on the same weekend. But I digress.
FIRST - On the last Sunday in April, Civil Twilight (first light) is typically just before 5:00 AM. Moving ahead 1 hour under DST means that Civil Twilight is just before 6:00 AM. It's easier to adjust when most folks start their day when the sun is already up. Moving the start of DST to mid-March (about 6 weeks) means that Civil Twilight starts about one hour later than it does in late April. It's still dark outside when most folks start their day.
SECOND - The start of DST is about 38 hours later than it should be. It should start at 12:00 Noon on a Friday (advancing to 1:00 PM), not a Sunday morning at 2:00 AM when the clock automatically advances to 3:00 AM. That the time shift now happens when nearly everyone is asleep is an attempt to hide the time shift and make it nearly conflict-free; that's nonsense and mischief of the first order. People's body clocks are thrown out of whack by the time shift happening during sleeping hours.
Also, making the shift during the day gives folks an opportunity to make a less disruptive shift by going to bed earlier, relative to when they got up that same day.
Year-round Standard Time is the way to go. If people want to time shift, they can still do so. It should be done organically, not because a law arbitrarily decides it must be so.
I feel like people might more easily get used to this now, since we all have little mini flashlights in our pockets. But this is the one reason why permanent standard time might be better than DST (we'd still get plenty of late daylight in the summer).
Giants with a potentially sneaky good, back end of the rotation signing on the cheap in LHP Matt Boyd...may not be ready to roll until Memorial Day, but combined, he and Rodon should give them 30-35 starts, a sub 3.5 ERA, 200+ IP, 15+ wins & 225 K's...along with Webb, DeSclafani, Cobb, Wood...
Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry is expected to return for the start of the Western Conference playoffs with a left foot sprain, but will undergo further evaluation with specialists, sources told ESPN.
Didn't they move the fences in at AT&T park either last year or the year before? Supposedly this is why Brandon Belt posted a career high in homers last year.
(hard carriage returns inserted to aid in reading; too bad bullet points aren't available on this platform)
As per Wikipedia, the changes in the outfield fences are as follows -
The Giants renovated the center field section of Oracle Park between October 2019 and June 2020.[20][21]
The bullpens were moved from foul territory into center field, so the Giants decided to make their garden smaller to fit the bullpens behind the center-field wall. With this renovation, the dimensions of the park have slightly shrunk.
Left-center was trimmed down from 404 feet to 399 feet,
right-center (known as Triples Alley) was trimmed down from 421 feet to 415 feet (to represent the San Francisco area code), and
dead-center was trimmed down the 399 feet to 391 feet, making it the second shortest dead-center field distance in MLB, behind only Fenway Park in Boston.[22] With this renovation, approximately 650 bleacher seats had to be removed, so the two terraces could be built for fans to watch the relief pitchers warm-up from up close.[23]
The center field wall shortened from eight feet to seven feet, but after the Giants first exhibition of the 2020 season, the dead-center field part of the wall (covering the garden) was raised from seven feet to ten feet to improve visibility to the hitter.[24]
Omicron variant spreading across Europe. Early indications are that it is very much like Omicron - breakthrough infections happen, but symptoms are generally less acute, and vaccination substantially reduces hospitalization chance. However, it is more infectious.
Seems to have hit Hong Kong very hard, but as I understand it they had a big problem there with getting elderly people vaccinated. So when a wave hits it's going to be bad.
[MBB] TIL: There are only 37 different jersey numbers you can wear in college basketball. There are no jerseys ending in 6 through 9 because it takes two hands for a ref to signal. A team can have 00 or 0, but not both. See page 26.
Some toasts take a traditional form; for example, for some toasts all men have to stand up and drink wine in silence. In many cases, however, the guests vie to say something more original and emotional than the previous speaker, and the whole process grows into a sort of oratory contest.

Raised by Wolves. I can’t even explain it anymore. It isn’t so much a show but a WTF roller coaster viewing experience.
So, give it a pass? Don’t want to invest ten more hours if not significantly better.
Watched the first episode of Upload last night - was good, curious to see where it goes.

Dodgers have become worse than the Yankees ever were.
Boom!
Aaron still not vaccinated. No, not that one. The other one.
https://deadspin.com/aaron-judge-evades-vaccination-question-1848660516
I guess he can play at home since it isn't indoors.
It's apparently the private employer mandate that will prevent any Mets and Yankees players from playing in home games if unvaccinated.
Ahh...ok. Interesting to see how this shakes out. With the new variant I wonder if at some point there will be a vax requirement to play.

Curry gets injured. Dubs lose. https://www.espn.com/nba/recap/_/gameId/401360861
Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry is expected to return for the start of the Western Conference playoffs with a left foot sprain, but will undergo further evaluation with specialists, sources told ESPN.
So 1.5 full games with both Steph and Klay...
well 1 "full" game in that case ...
We can't have nice things.
Joc to the Giants
Wonder what Pederson's splits at AT&T were before this season.
GB49 is a proud papa
Around CF. I think from where it hits the brick in RCF to where the straight part hits in LCF.
as per baseball-reference.com, at AT&T Park, Pederson's stats are as follows -
G - 45 GS - 33
PA - 142 AB - 123 R - 17 H - 33 2B - 10 3B - 1 HR - 7 RBI - 18
SB - 1 CS - 2 BB - 16 SO - 29
BA - .268 OBP - .362 SLG - .537 OPS - .898 TB - 66
GDP - 3 HBP - 2 SH - 1 SF - 0 IBB - 0 ROE - 0 BAbip - .299 tOPS+ - 125
I tried to group statistics in a meaningful way that they could be read without it being a great long list on the screen.
I guess he could still be trade midseason if the Giants don't contend to possibly do a personal three-peat.
Good for him to go home. His last 1 year contract was pretty successful. Hopefully the Giants won't get to experience Joctober!
Donnie Barrels signs with the Reds. I'll miss him.

Goode with a 39" Vertical jump
Crawford with a 4.49 40
Maybe we should've used Goode on the last play against Oregon and Washington for the Stanfurd special.
Today in Covid
Omicron variant spreading across Europe. Early indications are that it is very much like Omicron - breakthrough infections happen, but symptoms are generally less acute, and vaccination substantially reduces hospitalization chance. However, it is more infectious.

Seems to have hit Hong Kong very hard, but as I understand it they had a big problem there with getting elderly people vaccinated. So when a wave hits it's going to be bad.
My son, who is in France caught it.
How does it impact his return trip? Does he have to quarantine in a hotel and change his return trip?
I... don't know
He's in Beaune now, so maybe.
Elsewhere in college
Ben Howland out in Starkville, MS....
Knowlton's search firm just tinkled a little...
[MBB] TIL: There are only 37 different jersey numbers you can wear in college basketball. There are no jerseys ending in 6 through 9 because it takes two hands for a ref to signal. A team can have 00 or 0, but not both. See page 26.
https://www.ncaapublications.com/productdownloads/BR22.pdf
Another reason to dislike AAU: No jersey numbering rules. When I officiate AAU games, I have to figure out how to signal numbers 88, 76, etc.....
I remember reading about this awhile ago. Might have been this NYT article. https://www.nytimes.com/2015/03/31/sports/ncaabasketball/numerals-on-college-basketball-jerseys-you-can-count-them-on-one-hand.html
Toast
In Georgia (the country), they have a "Tamada" - essentially a toast/drinking dictator at a wedding.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tamada
this is great >>>
Some toasts take a traditional form; for example, for some toasts all men have to stand up and drink wine in silence. In many cases, however, the guests vie to say something more original and emotional than the previous speaker, and the whole process grows into a sort of oratory contest.

NERD!
takes one to know one ...
PROUD TO BE A NERD!
I've got two favorites:
1. For a birthday party that expects to get somewhat wild: "May these be the last words you remember."
2. For general purpose (which should properly be said in French): "To our women, to our horses, and the men who ride them."
