Welcome to the Daily Bear Dump, a W4C community board where one can talk about pretty much anything, like…
Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg became a punching bag across cable news and on tabloid covers for his reluctance to prosecute Donald Trump. Two prosecutors from his office quit in protest. Reportedly, Trump will be indicted today related to payments made to Stormy Daniels.
It has come to my attention that everyone's name is coming out as "props.children" in comments. Rob has sent an email to Substack, but there's not much else that he can do.
Reading: Last Call at the Hotel Imperial: The Reporters Who Took On a World at War by Deborah Cohen. About a third of the way through and finding it extraordinary. It's about some intrepid American reporters who sent dispatches from all over Europe and Asia from the 20s and 30s. Covering the rise of Nazism, the Soviet Union under Stalin, the drive for independence in India and more. They were an eclectic group of free-loving, free drinking and free-thinking journalists, male and female. Great stuff.
it's not as overtly about the politics of the time, but I had a great uncle who went around the world in the 30s writing about his travels for a Glasgow newspaper, including driving most if not all the way across the US, which was no mean feat at the time.
just finished reading this and it was thoroughly enjoyable. it is billed as a murder mystery but the real strength of the book is the personality of the main character, a maid in an upscale hotel.
the main character is infuriating and likable all at once. at first i thought it was a "dumb book" but as i read more and more i am appreciating that the world is made up of so many people that all are seeing it through very different lenses and emotions. what seems "completely normal and logical" to me is probably "infuriating" for someone else.
[Thai Authorities] I've got good news and bad news about the missing radioactive Cesium. The good news is that we found the container. The bad news is that a recycling plant's employees might need to take a 300 year break.
In reaction to U of Oregon students chanting "f*** the Mormons" last year, Rep. Janelle Bynum (D-Clackamas) introduces a bill to suspend a head coach and ADs if derogatory behavior happens again. Not for nothing, her son is a walk-on RB with the Ducks.
That's asking for a 1A challenge. The chant is still tasteless and rude, but trying to attach *legal* consequences to speech that is simply tasteless and rude is a clear 1A violation.
I don’t know about dropping them, but if they keep their program of raising rates steadily in spite of the events of the past couple weeks, that would be nuts
Max Kellerman, Keyshawn Johnson, and Jay Williams discuss Kyrie rejecting Dillon Brooks attempt to exchange jerseys. They asked what Klay would have to say about this and Max made a suggestion that Klay should make a big show of exchanging jerseys with Kyrie.
It is truly a feat - having arguably the game’s two best players on your team and still not being competitive! That Sandoval guy that started for Mexico (also an Angel) looked good yesterday too
Japan - down by 1 in the bottom of the 9th to underdog Mexico. Ohtani gets a lead off double. The closer walks Japan's clean-up h itter. Up comes Munetaka Murakami - Japan's youngest triple-crown winner. Murakami fouls off a pretty good pitch, takes low on the next pitch. Then...
Amazing game! Arozarena was absolutely brilliant, love that guy. Japan ultimately was just too deep; Mexico did not have enough in the bullpen. Overall a joy to watch.
The whole game had these crazy shifts in momentum. Mexico went up 3-0 in the 4th on a three-run homer. Japan kept mounting threats but failing to score (in part due to sparking defensive plays by Mexico). Japan finally broke through in the 7th and tied it up with a three-run blast of their own. Then Mexico immediately took the lead back with a rally in the 8th, 5-3. Japan scratched out a run in the bottom of the 8th, which set up the walk-off in the 9th.
[LAX] ICYMI: On Sunday, Cal scored the fourth fewest goals in program history, a record which will last forever because you can't have negative points.
[SB] ICYMI: On Sunday, Cal & OSU tied due to a drop-dead travel time by the Bears. OSU fell behind 4-1 in the third, but clawed back to tie it in the 7th.
Less than a week until Succession returns and Barry will be back soon. Meanwhile enjoying Perry Mason. Along with John Oliver HBO is killing it for me these days.
Finished S2 of Mayor of Kingstown (Paramount +, 19/19): Again, for my money, the best show currently on TV. Definitely not a family drama, as it’s edgy, violent, gritty…but the writing is fantastic and the storylines so solid. Dunno if and when S3 will arrive, due to Jeremy Renner’s injury, though co-creator Taylor Sheridan is on record as saying they’ve gotten the go-ahead from P+. A good watch for mature audiences.

there were probably fewer baseball stadiums to visit back then too on your XC road trip ...
i put it on my list. aside from wanting to read more, read more modern stuff, i also just want to read more variety than i normally do.
i generally read very little non-fiction. so this is great.

Charge
If you want a cheap, relatively new Dodge Charger, one goes to Fayetteville. Military guys love to buy Dodge Chargers, but fewer can afford them.

A Challenger, not a Charger, but still... it's a $100k rocket

It's a running joke on the subreddit that makes fun of military guys being too military - financing a Ford Mustang at 9%

Too cheap to read the article. But I did know that peanut butter is a thixotropic fluid. I think I learned that in ME106A. Or maybe ME159.

Trout vs Ohtani. Two superstars face each other tonight for the first time.
Imagine them on the same team, that would be a dream team 🤣

And Mexico's manager is Angels first base coach.
Its been said that many Angels are working their butts off so that they don't have to go back to work from the spring break.

Arozarena’s HR robbing catch followed by his pose afterwards was 🤌
Also love the Mexico “M” on their hats. If they had an all green version, that would be a skitz hat
This game was amazing. And no pitch clock, allowed to shift.
I turned the TV on just in time to see this.

I really enjoy the Tiny Desk Concert series.
