I was visiting my JPL friends in Pasadena last week. They said that the fires spread via burning embers that were blown into attic vents by high winds. If you had sufficiently fine mesh blocking your vents, or if the vents were not aligned with the wind direction, then your house survived.
Yeah, as someone from San Diego who experienced the 03 and 07 wildfires here, that is correct. In high wind wildfire events, it is the embers that are blown 50-100 yards away that cause the fire to spread and homes to burn down.
I only watched the ending of a couple of games. The UofL loss, the Clemson loss, and another one. I guess I am not invested as much this year as previous years.
The Golden State Warriors wrapped up an excellent home-stand on Thursday night, beating the Toronto Raptors to go 6-1 on the extended staycation, matching a franchise best mark. But, just as was the case during Monday’s loss against the short-handed Denver Nuggets, Thursday’s win was not the walk in the park that one might have imagined when comparing the rosters on paper.
the Ws playoff seeding is looking more and more secure to avoid the play-in round. of course you never can tell these days if they will be able to sustain the latest success.
perhaps better to stay in seeds 6-7 range to avoid OKC in 2nd round. on the other hand, you have to eventually play and beat the good teams, so maybe it doesnt matter.
Dray has been really good on D the last couple of games. I think with Butler back there, he's more aggressive because he knows that Butler can cleanup anything.
Steph needs to let his back heal and not come back too early.
I will admit I was not a fan of the Butler trade when it was announced. No 2 HATES Jimmy Buckets. I guess I never really saw too many games of his so I didn't really know what he brought. But he did drag two Heat teams to the finals that had no business being in the finals.
I think the issue with him is that his motivation can wane, especially during long regular seasons. But if you have him when he is locked in and cares about winning, he is a huge asset.
The thing my wife noticed is that after the game he leaves the floor immediately. All the other players stay and socialize a bit. So he might have a bit of a personality thing.
The 26th-ranked California women's tennis team heads to the East Coast to battle No. 2 Virginia on Friday and No. 54 Virginia Tech on Sunday in the Old Dominion State. Cal brings a record of 7-4 into the match with the Cavaliers. With a 4-0 ACC record, the Golden Bears are tied for the conference lead with Duke, North Carolina and NC State.
RIVALRY MOVES TO ACC - Cal and Stanford will be playing for the 527th time in recorded history when they squad off for Friday's series opener but for the first time as members of the ACC.
The California men's tennis team – ranked a season-best No. 14 in this week's ITA poll – heads on another ACC road trip this week to play sixth-ranked Virginia and 63rd-ranked Virginia Tech. The Golden Bears (11-2, 4-2 ACC) are riding a four-match winning streak, with all four wins against conference competition.
After earning its first NCAA at-large berth into the NCAA Tournament, the No. 8 seed California women's basketball team (25-8, 12-6 ACC) will square off against the No. 9 seed Mississippi State (21-11, 7-9 SEC) in the first round on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at the Galen Center in Los Angeles. This marks the first meeting between the two programs.
Although the California men's gymnastics team is taking a two-week break from competition before the upcoming MPSF Championships, Golden Bear freshman Trigg Dudley is set to compete by himself across the Atlantic as he joins the best of the best from around the U.K. at the British Championships this Saturday. The London native placed 13th in the all-around at the English Championships on March 1 with a score of 72.300 to qualify, returning to Berkeley afterwards to train before flying back to Liverpool, England, this week.
BERKELEY – Ron Rivera, a former All-American linebacker at Cal who went on to a highly successful professional playing and coaching career in the NFL, has been named General Manager of the Golden Bear football program, Chancellor Rich Lyons announced Thursday.
Disappointed that Wilcox will still be reporting in to Knowlton. Until we see some clearer indication that Rivera actually has power over hiring and firing for football I'm not sure this is more than a PR move.
Even for fundraising, it seems pretty clear that people don’t want to donate to the program while Knowlton is around. Hopefully Rivera reaches this conclusion very quickly and gets Lyons to help push Knowlton out.
As usual for Cal, it all seems to be happening far too slowly.
The top-seeded California women's gymnastics team is set to compete in its inaugural ACC Championship this Saturday at First Horizon Coliseum in Greensboro, North Carolina. First routine is set for 4 p.m. PT on ACC Network.
The Golden Bears (24-2, 6-0), who went undefeated in conference contests to win the ACC regular title, are in search of their first conference championship in program history.
FEDERAL WAY, Wash. – California senior Leah Polonsky ran out of 200-yard individual medleys to race Thursday. Otherwise, who knows how far her recent explosive improvement would have taken her?
Polonsky shattered her own personal-best time in the event during the morning prelims of the 2025 NCAA Championships, establishing the third-fastest time ever at Cal with a 1:51.91 to qualify second for the championship final. She returned to the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center hours later for the finals and shaved almost another half-second off that time, moving up to second place on the Golden Bear all-time list and finishing third with a mark of 1:51.51.
Rained here yesterday after being 70. Our pattern continues as today its back to 50 s but winds 20+ gusting to 50. The pattern of rain followed by a couple days of high winds has persisted for awhile now.
Truckee going to be low to mid 60s this weekend when I'm up there. Wondering how warm it will be at the top of Northstar. I'm guessing long sleeve shirt and then my shell will be enough. No need for the fleece.
I certainly won't be skiing in tshirts and cutoffs. Though with the way I ski now, I probably could and wouldn't fall and get hurt. Just go out and take it easy and have fun. Don't get hurt.
Vent

This may be a long thread if everyone vents their frustrations.
Only if politics or basketball tournament seeding are included.
That said, I was surprised at how little discussion of the various NCAA basketball tournaments there has been here.
I only watched the ending of a couple of games. The UofL loss, the Clemson loss, and another one. I guess I am not invested as much this year as previous years.

Sharks lose to the Hurricanes 3-1. Been a trying year for them.

I think they want the 4 just to get the home court advantage.
Prefer to avoid Lakers but also
don’t want play in and not sure where lakers will be
I think Lakers may be the toughest team for the Warriors. Lebron getting all the calls. Warriors don't have anyone that can stop Lebron.
1 - that fall that Curry took looked pretty bad. hopefully he recovers quick
2 - good win for the W's holding it together at the end for the win
3 - Draymond is still REALLY good, especially on the overall defense and doing the little things that dont show up in stat sheets.
4 - Butler didnt shoot well but contributed immensely to the wining effort
Dray has been really good on D the last couple of games. I think with Butler back there, he's more aggressive because he knows that Butler can cleanup anything.

I wonder with the Heat if it was just they didn't seem committed to surround him with good talent. I guess they do have Bam and Tyler Herro.
A's lost to the D-backs 11-3.
Giants did not lose the off-day.

Last I checked, MS was favored by 2.5 points.
At this moment, MS men are losing to the Baylor Bears 72-75 with 0.2 seconds left.

Go Bears!!!
Is Cal football going to hire a defensive coordinator?
Wilcox will probably just handle it.
Seems more likely as we go longer without any likely replacement candidates.
Spring
- has sprung!
On the calendar, maybe.
Not seeing it in the Bay Area weather...yet. It's supposed to get warm soon.
I think I saw mid 70s next week.

Has sprung a leak. Couldn't tell the cold wet was any different than the cold and wet the days before.
i guess i missed the first day of the spring. the internet says it was yesterday, Mar 20th.
expecting some spring skiing conditions even up here in BC this coming week
Truckee going to be low to mid 60s this weekend when I'm up there. Wondering how warm it will be at the top of Northstar. I'm guessing long sleeve shirt and then my shell will be enough. No need for the fleece.
Get out the sunscreen, especially if you ski in t- shirts and cutoffs with the warmer spring skiing.
I certainly won't be skiing in tshirts and cutoffs. Though with the way I ski now, I probably could and wouldn't fall and get hurt. Just go out and take it easy and have fun. Don't get hurt.
last time i was leaving a bar after a couple beers at lunch the server says to us .. "ski fast, take risks!"
i recommend shorts and a tank top
