Fed hikes interest rates again, pencils in only one more rate rise in 2023

I hope the bond market improves. I mean bonds as an asset class had their worst performance in 2022 since 1938. The rate increase will likely drive up yields but the prices will slump (and it has been enough already).

Thrilling finish to the World Baseball Classic as Ohtani strikes out Trout to clinch the win for Japan

https://espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/35914856/shohei-ohtani-fans-mike-trout-final-japan-wins-wbc

Top of the ninth. Two outs. A one-run game. In the batter's box stood Mike Trout, and on the pitcher's mound was Shohei Ohtani. When this was over, they would again be Los Angeles Angels teammates, but in this moment, this perfect moment, they were foes.

Three minutes later, when the at-bat of a lifetime ended, Ohtani was mobbed by his Samurai Japan teammates, the new World Baseball Classic champions, and Trout was skulking back to the Team USA dugout, having swung through a frisbee slider on a full count that cemented Japan's 3-2 victory Tuesday night.

In a tournament that had everything, a three-week sprint that brought the intensity and stakes of October baseball to March, it was only fitting that the dream scenario played out in the most dramatic of fashions.

"I believe this is the best moment in my life," said Ohtani, the 28-year-old two-way player who by sheer force wrested away the title of best player alive from Trout, whose grip on it seemed unbreakable.

What a game! And what a tourney! Lot of missed chances for us, but hat tip to Samurai Japan who played flawlessly as usual. This is maybe the only event put on by a US sports league that suffers from a lack of marketing. Would like to see it expanded a bit, put all in one place, and marketed 10x more

yeah, it was an amazing finish! おめでとう、日本!(does hiragana-kanji show up here?)

And not sure when Japan flew to Miami (maybe 5 days ago?), but that's an 11-hour(?) time diff, which is a lot of jet lag to overcome.

only way it coulda been scripted better is if the US were the home team, and there were a runner on, so that a Sayonara Home Run by Trout coulda won it for US (as opposed to the nasty Sayonara Slider from Ohtani!)

Japan was not flawless, tho. They left bases loaded after the three walks. But crazy how much parity there was this year (even the non-traditional baseball countries showed up.)

Agree about the marketing. There seemed to be a lot of empty primo seats.

Seems like it would suck to have to hang out and get silver medals, tho.

The game was loooong, tho. I think 4+ hours? Or am I mistaken.

Mar 22, 2023·edited Mar 22, 2023

Japan flew in on Saturday I think. Chartered direct flight.

Japan only had to adjust once though. What's worse are the other teams that were in Pools A and B such as Cuba, Italy, etc. who had to play Group stage games in Tokyo or Taiwan, and then had to fly to Miami had they advanced to the semifinals.

Some people criticize the unbalanced Pools in the group stage, but it comes from teams like Puerto Rico, Venezuela, Dominican Republic not wanting to travel to Asia just to play a few games.

Expand full comment

Have the last two rounds always been in the States?

I think that they need to have the whole tourney in one place (like the World Cup). Who else could host? Japan, obviously. Prob S Korea and Taiwan have enough stadiums.

Mexico?

Could have an Asia base one year and an America base the next. Prob not enough infrastructure (not teams) for Europe or Australia or Africa (who I don't think participates).

Expand full comment

Yeah, the final rounds have always been in the US. Specifically California. They had games in SD, LA, and SF. I had been to every game that Japan played here in the states except 2006 that were played in San Diego while I was at Cal. This was the first time it was hosted in Miami.

I don't think MLB players would want to go to Asia for a whole month before the season. The whole tournament could be played in US, but I think MLB is counting on Japan (NPB) to spend all the money to host games. No one else would be willing to spend that much money.

Expand full comment

Btw Trout looked a little leaguer in that last AB. Just seemed completely overmatched. The real rally killer tho was Mookie. GIDP on I think the first pitch, after such an awesome AB by McNeil. That left Trout to just kind of swing for the fences as a last gasp, which is a low probability event, particularly against Ohtani.

Looks like a bunch of neighborhoods in the East Bay have been without power for 14+ hours now. Including maybe UC Berkeley?

Expand full comment

We're in Berkeley and haven't lost power, thankfully. On my walk to work saw LOTS of branches on the ground ( I prefer them in their natural state, attached to trees).

Expand full comment

We did not lose power last night. However, a neighbor's oak tree fell over and hit the roof of the cottage next door. Apparently, live electrical wires were also involved.

On my way to BART this morning I drove down Rose St towards Sacramento. When I got to California, I stopped and looked around and then ahead. Typically the stoplights at Sacramento are visible and the streetlights lighten the area. Nothing; just inky darkness. So, I turned left down California and then right on Cedar. Power was out at that intersection of Sacramento St., too. Power was also out at the next three stoplights (Virginia, Delaware, and University Ave) and possibly beyond. Really impressed by the darkness of no power on a major street in the early morning.

A tree sort of fell at Sacramento and Virginia...as of this morning, it was still held up by the power line!
