SG Bear and his stupid DBD polls .. is one of the best parts of DBD

Expand full comment

I don't know why anyone wouldn't vote for Knowlton.

Expand full comment

Same. I was wondering if my vote was the only vote or if the choice is so freakin' obvious that no one would vote for any other option.

This is one of Sgbear's stupid polls!

It's the latter.

Narrator: It *IS* the latter.

Definitely sets a standard that merits and warrants high expectations.

Im humbled by all this. Suffice to say I set high standards for myself, as deserved by this august body.

Many mathematicians have become less interested in the square roots of numbers and are now focusing on rounder or even oval shaped roots.

Stanford makes the hire of Kyle Smith official.

Oy! He’s a good coach, had really built something in Pullman. Maybe Cal can lure Rice to Berkeley so he can beat his former coach twice a year.

The Red Sox released a statement saying there is no record of Ippei Mizuhara ever being employed by the organization as Hideki Okajima's interpreter.

However, all this time, Mizuhara had said that he was hired by Okajima to be his interpreter at NY Yankees, but Okajima failed the physical so he never got to work as interpreter for him. So I don't know why the Red Sox had to make such a statement. Okajima did play for the Red Sox, but that was before Okajima met Mizuhara.

It's like Cal releasing a statement saying we have no relationship with Mizuhara. Sure, that is true, but no one ever said there was. It's so pointless. But all these news leaking out makes Mizuhara more fishy and suspicious, which in fact may be working in Ohtani's favor. More that Mizuhara looks bad, people starting to think maybe Mizuhara really did steal money from Ohtani.

A budget got passed in the US House as Johnson essentially lost the majority in his own party. A motion was immediately filed to oust Johnson as House Speaker, but it is unlikely to be enforced.

Tammy Murphy stops her campaign as the Democratic candidate for NJ's seat in the US Senate. This opens the way for Rep. Andy Kim to be the Democratic nominee. It looks like he'll face Curtis Bashaw. Murphy had a massive name recognition advantage over Kim because she is the first lady of NJ. But people just didn't like her, especially women voters - according to Monmouth.

Tammy Murphy was also (horrors!) a Republican who donated to W in '00 and '04.

Maybe that came back to bite her in the posterior. I don't know. It's interesting that Tammy Murphy chose to run for office. New Jersey First Ladies have usually been practically invisible to voters.

Today is the final day that Trump can appeal his NY judgement. NY Times says that an appellate court is expected to rule this week. If Trump loses that appeal, AG Letitia James is expected to file restraining notices to Trump family banks and brokerages -- essentially freezing their accounts. NYT also reports that Ms. James has already posted the judgement in Westchester County, to essentially start the process of seizing the Westchester golf course and Bedford Estate.

Shōgun S1 E1-3 (Hulu, 18/19 WB). This will sweep you away. The sets, costumes, and acting are all stunning. The adaptation does not treat you like an idiot. You are figuratively thrown into the deep waters of Japan and have to paddle furiously in order to catch up with who is who and what is going on, which parallels the protagonist's struggle of being in a strange land. I am only 3 episodes in and the suspense is building to a slow boil. So far, it's fantastic.

i am enjoying this a lot too. it is interesting how the Japanese and the Europeans both think of each other as "barbarians"

interestingly, the word barbarian was invented by the Greeks for people they could not understand because the foreign language sounded like "bar bar bar bar"
