Quantum Computing @ Berkeley

i got invited to some small roundtable dinner-discussion in NYC last night. the idea was to have some dean (Steve Khan - Physical Sciences) hear from people in NYC who are involved in and interested in quantum computing.

quick takeaways

- Cal is involved in some Statewide quantum initiative that will eventually create jobs. they dont want to fall behind others that have also publicly made investments (IL, MD, CO, SC, and others)

- physics dept is changing Physics 10 to be about quantum information

- physics dept is going to offer a minor in quantum computing for those interested

- they are considering more non-major classes because there is an awareness that you probably dont need to know mathematics of quantum mechanics to effectively use QCs.

- there were some people in the room that were there in the classic NYC investor and finance mindset that are waiting until QCs are actually useful before investing.

Mets win home opener. lots of runs. some touted Mets rookie hit an opening day homer.

despite threatening to do so, i did not go to the game. the thought of the 1 hr subway ride back and forth when i was already very tired made it so that i never made it.

i have had a long lull in airport travel so i havent had to experience any of the TSA chaos. next trip is Apr to Miami for a wedding.

mostly a lot of driving to Boston and Burlington

heyalumnigo's avatar

SFO had no issues, either going out for a redeye in Terminal 3 or entering through Customs at 6:45 AM. I thought CA had some sort of other TSA employees, either state employees or something like that. Which is why they didn't have issues. But maybe that was a while ago.

Wiata78's avatar

Yes, I read somewhere that SFO has contractors rather than TSA government employees, so their employees were still getting paid.

CalGal2004's avatar

This is correct. Apparently there are about 20 airports in the country using TSA contractors.

I’ve gone out of SFO three times this year and it was smooth sailing through security.

No 2 is flying out of ATL at the end of April. I don't think his GF has precheck so hopefully things calm down by then. Otherwise they may have to get there like 3 hours early. Even with Precheck I think ATL is brutal.
