Montana’s highest court on Wednesday struck down four laws that the state’s Republican-led legislature passed in 2021 to restrict voting.
The Montana Supreme Court declared the laws unconstitutional, siding with a district court judge who ruled against them in 2022. The laws “violate the fundamental right to vote provided to all citizens by the Montana Constitution,” according to a summary of the majority opinion that was signed by four of the seven justices.
The laws ended same-day voter registration in most cases, eliminated student ID cards as a permitted form of voter ID and sought to curtail paid ballot-collection efforts. They also outlawed absentee ballots for people who would be 18 years old by Election Day.
D.C. Mayor Muriel E. Bowser and Ted Leonsis, owner of the Wizards and Capitals, said Wednesday they were finalizing a deal that — if approved by the D.C. Council — would keep the teams in downtown D.C. until 2050, ending the owner’s planned move to Virginia.
An announcement is planned for late Wednesday afternoon at Capital One Arena downtown.
Under the terms of the deal, D.C. would spend $515 million over three years to help Leonsis modernize the arena and the owner would sign a new lease keeping the teams in D.C. for 25 more years.
COMMENT: Just three months ago, Leonsis had announced the Cap and Wizards would move to a new arena in Alexandria pending approval by the Virginia legislature. What Leonsis didn't expect was that the new Democratic majority would put the brakes on the plan and some members of the GOP would also express skepticism about the deal and its impact on the budget. Also unexpected: Alexandria's City Council and mayoral hopefuls started lining up against it after being seen as in support. Maybe reality caught up with them and bit them in the posterior.
Good. Hoping it's a harbinger of sorts for John Fisher's play at making a real estate deal by using the Oakland A's as leverage.
I suddenly realize that major sports franchise ownerships in the DC/Maryland area has been terrible the past 2 to 3 decades. My condolences. I feel like we're getting into it in the Bay Area. John Fisher is hot garbage, Charles Johnson isn't much better, and Jed York has no compassion for the 49ers host community (Santa Clara) as he wants to capture City Council and run the city as well as the team.
At last Joe Lacob actually wants to create a franchise the community can be proud of and isn't trying to get outlandish deals favoring his bank account as well.

I'm encouraged that there was backlash from the public talent within NBC and MSNBC towards the McDaniel hiring. What ticks me off more is that network execs don't have a moral compass that would allow them to rule out someone like Ronna McDaniel, Corey Lewandowski, Jeffrey Lord, or any other number of people who enabled the Orange Turd.
Which is as good as saying, "I have no moral compass".
The "equal time" crap is just that: crap. And it gums up the machinery of a functioning democracy. Which makes people want to give up. And that's what the insurrectionists and the guys who would light the world afire want decent people to do: give up.

A full solar eclipse in Maine was a featured event in the Stephen King novella, Dolores Claiborne. Also featured in the movie by the same name, too.
weather permitting, the plan is to ski in VT during the weekend and see the eclipse from friend's house in Burlington VT.

there used to be a law until recently .. if you serve pie at a restaurant, you must offer the option of melted cheddar cheese on top.
a think slice of cheddar cheese melted on top of apple pie is an amazing thing! all the creaminess of ice cream without the sugar.
The sharper the cheddar, the better. I was introduced to cheddar cheese on top of apple pie roughly 47 years ago...in New Jersey.
