We're closing in on the end of the college admissions cycle in this house and still have 2 laggards from whom my daughter hasn't heard. Which wouldn't matter except for the fact that one of them represents my wife's current best shot at the 18 year old deciding against college in the UK (until we go and see the UK alternatives which could result in youthful horror, you never know).
I saw a tweet from the Daily Trojan yesterday that there were nearly 81k applicants to SC which just absolutely blows my mind, both at the general trend of kids applying to so many schools and then the specific trend of my alma mater in particular.
We went to the USC admissions night at my kids' school. It has become a pretty good feeder for both SC and Stanford and to a lesser extent, Cal. We also were surprised by the number of applicants, so the admissions director advised parents to start planning ahead early on with their kids to become very active socially and also academically.
Kids can't just be all academic anymore. They need to volunteer and have extra curriculars. In some respects it means kids can't just be kids. They always need to be going from one activity to another.
And this trend too will result in a sea of applicants blending together. It is tough to get kids involved in a volunteer activity that is aligned with passion and not resume, but that is probably the way to do it.
Planes, Trains and Automobiles. It is a great movie and despite some confusion, is not a Christmas movie. It’s one of only a handful of movies set during Thanksgiving.
as in most of Europe, trains are generally a very nice and convenient way to get around. they even had a nice play area for when i was traveling w/ 3 yr old and it was free to bring 3 yr old.
however a train delay out of Oslo led to a particularly memorable hiking trip since i missed the bus to on national park and found an alternate hike and lodging somewhat on the the fly.
i am not sure how many people plan to go to Rondane National Park but it was particularly stunning.
1) If Adam-West-era-Batman decided he needed a Bat Train, he would consult those designers.
2) That train just made my bucket list. Looks like they're selling tickets on August 6 for August 28 for €7.50. That feels like they're looking to cater to locals before tourists which I don't begrudge.
You can get a cellphone signal on the highest mountain in Colorado, and if you get lost hiking that mountain, you should probably answer your phone — even if you don't recognize the caller's number.
That's the message being spread by Lake County Search and Rescue, which tried to help a lost hiker on Mount Elbert by sending out search teams and repeatedly calling the hiker's phone. All to no avail. The hiker spent the night on the side of the mountain before finally reaching safety.
"One notable take-away is that the subject ignored repeated phone calls from us because they didn't recognize the number," the rescue unit said on its Facebook page.
Some states bill the cost of the S&R operation to the victim. Smart move to pretend you thought the calls were spam and just get back to the trailhead on your own.
No words would make Rodgers feel ashamed because the dude has no shame. It is regrettable that so many in our world today lack the integrity to experience the shame of being so f***ing classless.
