Welcome to the DBD, a W4C community board where one can talk about pretty much anything, like…
You and your fellow DBDers have just survived the crash of a small plane. Both the pilot and co-pilot were killed in the crash. It is mid-January , and you are in Northern Canada. The daily temperature is 25 below zero, and the nighttime temperature is 40 below zero. There is snow on the ground, and the countryside is wooded with several creeks criss-crossing the area. The nearest town is 30 miles away. You are all dressed in city clothes appropriate for a business meeting. Your group of survivors managed to salvage some items. Which are the most important items and which are the least?
A ball of steel wool
A small ax
A loaded .45-caliber pistol
Can of Crisco shortening
Newspapers (one per person)
Cigarette lighter (without fluid)
Extra shirt and pants for each survivor
20 x 20 ft. piece of heavy-duty canvas
A sectional air map made of plastic
One quart of 100-proof whiskey
A compass Family-size chocolate bars (one per person)
Between the 2008 and 2009 NFL seasons, Marshawn Lynch appeared on Broadway as the titular character in Anton Chekov’s Uncle Vanya. His performance was met with decidedly mixed reviews.
(All trivia verified by the International Trivia Foundation.)
speaking of eating, my wife as developed an egg intolerance and one of her favorite things is ice cream.
traditionally American ice cream did not have egg. a lot of ice cream places these days add a lot of egg to be more in the French style. however, we discovered that Jeni's does not add egg to any of their flavors and we had some the other night on 14th St in DC.
Not sure how to rank each item in terms of value because each of them is useful in some way.
100 proof whiskey is flammable.
The cigarette lighter probably could provide a spark to ignite whiskey-soaked steel wool, which can, in turn, ignite wood to build a fire.
A small ax could be used to cut down wood and make poles from long branches.
A 20 ft. x 20 ft. canvas tarp could be used to form a lean-to with poles made from branches cut by the small ax. This will provide a minimal amount of shelter or a windbreak.
I assume that the list of items has a typo. The last line should actually be two lines:
11. A compass
*and* 12. Family-size chocolate bars (one per person)
Use the compass and the sectional air map to find a route to the town. Two people will need to hike to town to get help to rescue everyone else.
The chocolate bars will provide some calories for internal warmth. Also, everyone should put on additional layers to help conserve body heat.
The Crisco shortening also represents calories that can be used to generate body heat.
The loaded gun can be used to fend off predators, like a wolf.
He is such a toxic person; I can’t imagine wanting to entwine my life with his in any way by doing business with him, being his lawyer, anything. Something bad will clearly come out of it. And yet half the country wants him to be president again! So bananas
I really don’t like sports betting, as it preys on young men in particular (who just happen to be the core demographic of sports leagues, what a coincidence), but the reason for the explosion is not some policy change by sports leagues. It’s legalization by state and local governments after heavy lobbying and promises of sweet, sweet cash. If we want something different to happen, we need to tell our legislators, not Manfred or Silver
I looked into tickets for Baltimore's opening day game against the Angels. Tickets in the section we usually sit in were going for $300+. For that price, we could fly out to Oakland and pay $20-something each for their opener.
Without the opening-day tax, tickets in that same section are $23 on Sunday so we're going to that game Instead.
Based on the video, it appears that onside kicks can only happen in the 4th quarter *and* the kicking team must declare its intention to the referee. But the spot for the kick and the new restraining lines are the same for regular kickoffs. What's not clear to me is the distance the kicked ball must travel for the kicking team to recover.
Hey, let's not forget that Stanfurd also forfeited the first Rose Bowl game (1902) to Michigan. Trailing Michigan 49-0 at the end of the 3rd quarter, the Stanfurd captain announced to the referee that their team had had enough and wouldn't play anymore.
Who were some of the best non-power pitchers in MLB history?
Rick Reuschel?
Barry Zito (seemed to survive on his nasty 12-to-6 curve, at least later in career)
who was that one guy who threw a lot of those knuckle balls?
Wakefield
Phil Niekro and RA Dickey
and Niekro's pupil Tim Wakefield
Late career Phil Niekro.
Also late career Jamie Moyer.
You could argue “entire career” Jamie Moyer…;-)
That's true.
Maddux for sure
And Glavine.
Chicks dig the long ball.

He just appeared on stage so he wouldn't get fined.
I am sure Ben Parker wrote the negative reviews

I don't know about that compass Family-sized chocolate bar. Do I have to eat it in a northern direction?
This type of puzzler always stresses me out. Since I have no survival skills, you have my permission to eat me.
that sounds like an insult. (Ala "bite me")

Yes, theirs is cream cheese based! Sorry to hear about your wife's egg intolerance, but yay for Jeni's!
that's what the seemingly nice person on Survivor says, and they ended up winning!
(i am conjecturing, having never seen the show)
extra clothes seems like a good idea, but perhaps a tool like an axe to chop trees and start fires would be good.
as much as it pains me to say .. the whiskey is probably not that useful. i would just drink it immediately and be done w/ it.

heh, some of my research uses this scenario (along with similar ones in Lunar, desert, and oceanic settings) as problem-solving tasks for groups
Bummer - this group didn’t recover a mirror.

IMO it's a new thing that leagues will need to get used to policing. Eventually things will level out.

I'm not a fan of gambling either, but I don't know that there was a good argument for keeping it illegal.
I think making it legal and on your phone is the combo that is too much for me

The NFL to address skyrocketing ticket prices, owners sexually abusing staff, and corrupt ticket sales... but first - let's change kick-off rules. RIP surprise onside kicks

If they call an onside kick does it revert to the old way of lining up? Doesn’t seem practical with the new way.
See the video on the linked webpage -

We missed out on a solid scorer from Furman, who committed to Xavier over Cal and Indiana. SMU and ‘Furd added big time HC’s this week, as well.
Love Madsen and his staff, but it’s very likely we’re really gonna struggle next year in our inaugural ACC season.
every time I read something about "Cal in the ACC", I still do a double-take. Like it's a bad dream...
It’s patently absurd.
