Historically, the Greco-Roman week began with Sunday (dies solis), and Monday (dies lunae) was the second day of the week. It is still the custom to refer to Monday as feria secunda in the liturgical calendar of the Catholic Church. Quakers also traditionally referred to Monday as "Second Day". The Portuguese and the Greek (Eastern Orthodox Church) also retain the ecclesiastical tradition (Portuguese segunda-feira, Greek Δευτέρα "deutéra" "second"). Monday is xīngqīyī (星期一) in Chinese, meaning "day one of the week".
Bad news: my car got broken into--shattered driver's window, glove compartments and center console open and gone through
Good news: I asked the people doing construction in my complex if I could borrow a vacuum, and they were kind enough to vacuum all the broken glass for me! At a moment where I was a bit daunted by the process, the kindness of strangers meant so much.
Request: I'm supposed to let the police know what's missing (and value of any items). I know my sunglasses are gone. Are there other things that are commonly kept in cars that are slipping my mind?
I had my 1974 corolla broken into in Underhill Garage in 1985(?). Not "broken" into. Window was slightly open and they got in. To find about 73 cents and two fake sheepskin seat covers.
they left a fingerprint-covered mace canister in the car. I got a call from campus 5-0 in the middle of the night. The culprits were caught in People's Park. When asked if they were local, they said, "yeah, we're visiting from Frisco". Book 'em, Dano!

older daughter who is senior in HS got into NYU Shanghai for college. she really wants to go and have a not-normal college experience, but is realistically considering all the hassles associated with actually getting there (single use visas only), quarantine rules (14 days + some more), coronavirus situation, political climate, getting crushed by Chinese students in her intended math major, etc etc ..
she has been taking Mandarin in her public school since 4th grade, so that is the least of her concerns. in fact. she wants to take the opportunity to get fluent while she can.
given that she might not be going in/out of China much is very likely that she will be there for the first 2 yrs. your 3rd yr you usually go to a different NYU global campus (possibly NYC) and come back to Shanghai for the 4th.
i am not actually that worried about her. more bummed/annoyed that she may have to decide against going for things very much out of her control.
Have her talk to our friend on here who has lived there for most of the past 15 years. He probably has the best insight of anyone you know as to the realities and challenges
someone last week recommended Abbott Elem and Starstruck.
Watched the first two eps of Abbott. Not bad. If I didn't know it was ABC, I woulda guessed. It's their Modern Family sensibility. Like all CBS comedies are 3-camera "make a middle-aged parent feel edgy" with their ribaldry.
Starstruck I plowed thru in two nights. Very Catastrophe and Lovesick. (Someone gave me credit for turning them onto Lovesick...whoever that was: watch Starstruck.) Even tho the fundamental premise is completely unbelievable.
The story of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight was always a weird one, and I thought the 1984 Sean Connery version was pretty strange. Haven't seen the new one, but from what I read, they changed the outcome of the story.
we read it in HS and i have probably read it once or twice more since. the story itself is full of strange imagery and interesting themes .. not your typical good vs evil hero story.
but i am one of those people that apparently like to read "boring books"
I recently rewatched it after reading some discussion/analysis in other places and found it more rewarding. It's that kind of film; gotta do your homework.
I think it's still a bit wonky as a narrative. The main character is so hard to read that it's hard to get invested unless you have some knowledge about the original story it's based on.
I think it's a bit wonky as storytelling, especially for a first-timer. As overall "filmmaking" I think it's pretty superlative: the look, the sound, etc. Again, it just depends on how much homework you're willing to do. It's basically an art film.
Go HEELS! No 3 and I had tickets to the Warriors/Jazz game (he chose this game back in Feb) which started at around the same time. So I brought my tablet so we could watch both. When the Warriors made their big run to take the lead, I was watching some of the play and knew Klay and JPoole hit a few big 3s, but didn't even realize they took the lead. After the game, a couple of other guys joined us in watching the last few min of the Carolina game.
I'm in Seattle for work so now I guess I gotta find a sports bar to watch the game. If anyone knows Seattle I need a suggestion. I saw there is a Seattle Carolina club but they haven't updated their alumni page for a watch today. They still have the Saturday watch location up. Though it's possible it'll be at the same place.
[WGym] Bears magical season comes to an end at the Regional Finals as Minnesota come from behind in the final rotation. However, the Bear set a school record on the Beam.
It's basically as the article says. The usual pattern is that California sees a net loss of migration within the US (because it's cheaper to live elsewhere), but more than adequately replaces that with in-migration from other countries. In the COVID era, the latter hasn't been happening.

That is nuts. It outstrips many commutes I know about, but there are still a number of lengthy commutes among field staff at EBMWU. For instance, Vacaville to Richmond. Manteca to San Lorenzo. Tracy to Oakland (not so bad). Elk Grove to Richmond. Petaluma to Oakland. Rohnert Park to Oakland. Fairfield to Walnut Creek doesn't look so bad.
"When a mated Peregrine dies during the breeding season, the most likely outcome of the nest is abandonment. In rare cases, a new mate can come in, establish a bond with the remaining individual, and adopt the chicks. It is *possible* that we are witnessing this right now."
There is apparently some question as to the paternity of the first two eggs. I read it's possible they're all the new guys (I am naming him Casanova) and Annie was being a total ho even before Grinnell died.
There's been some research suggesting that some species of birds practice, essentially, open relationships. Mating pairs will stick together to raise chicks but will both mate with others, and not particularly care about paternity. I can't find anything suggesting this applies to falcons, but promiscuity in both sexes has been observed.

How many women regularly post on DBD?
There used to be at least 5 regulars. scootie, tbb, AndBears, Classof87, CalBears81. And I'm sure I'm forgetting others.
That asshole Ken ran off CalBears81 one day, I wish she would deign to come back.
Really? I don't think I know that story. Anything worth sharing? I used to be a big fan of Calbears81 and her articles.
Ken called her racist bc she said Clarence Thomas was not qualified to sit on SCOTUS, but it went well beyond that
Crazy. Well I hope she is doing OK, and that we'll see her again someday.
You can find her on Twitter @CalBearsHistory
Yup that was it - and I wasn't a mod then, so I couldn't kick him off.
You’re a mod now?
Now that he doesn't post here she should.
Every time someone new posts I worry that they're just him under another name until they all invariably turn out to be nice and then all is well.

I'm sure he would post as his original name if he joined. But then sign his message Ken.
Or he would post like GoBears49 style.

I haven't seen it, but that doesn't sound like good film making at all. ( I am familiar with a couple of versions of the story)

What? An "art film" means it's ok to have a bad narrative? As someone who loves art-house films I find that comment very silly.

Of definitely. I think Kansas wins going away. Especially if Bacot isn't 100%. I was shocked the opening line was only around 4.5.
