Rebels is best watched, not as a completionist, but instead through someone else's curated lists - because at its heart it is a cartoon aimed at kids. So there's a bunch of filler episodes, but its my second favorite Favreau/Filoni series.

So... a little while ago someone was surprised that a gorgeous 6,000 sq. ft. mansion sold for a million plus over asking (as if that's even a thing): a house at 1271 Spruce St in Berkeley sold for 4 Mil, basically a piece of crap that had some nice additions, zero views, that we wouldn't even pay list price (1.7 IIRC)
Coincidentally, 1271 Spruce St. is also within a stone's throw (maybe slightly more distant) of Casa de Slug.
Also within a stone's throw of Casa de Slug is a house (2241 Glen Ave.) undergoing what can accurately be called total reconstruction. I expect it to go on the market when it's finished. Gawd only knows what that property's listing and sales price will be.
Given the $6M price tag of 1314 Arch St. (~6,200 sq ft)., I wonder why anyone would pay $4M for 1271 Spruce St ~2,500 sq ft). The $/sq. ft. at 1271 Spruce St. is about 65% *higher* than 1314 Arch St. And the two properties were sold about one month apart. 1314 Arch St has the better views, is on a quieter street, and probably has the better backyard.
It's a mystery to me why 1271 Spruce Street sold for as much as it did.
I bought my house last year at $875k and a house nearby with the exact same floor plan but 100 square feet smaller and on a smaller lot just sold for $1.15. I could probably sale my house right today for $1.25.
My brother and sister in law checked on pricing on some new builds across a main road from where they are now in the Portland suburbs - wasn't strictly what / where they had in mind, but came with some upside for schools etc. Someone somehow managed to get in the mix to jack up the prices from the builders so they're still on the rental train for the time being - their down payment was on target for 2.5 years ago but they can't keep up with the market.
We have a JPL/NASA employee in our club that absolutely loathes SpaceX/Elon and cringes any time they are mentioned on board. She does have a valid excuse though since SpaceX exploded a rocket 1mi from their launch pad (the one that had the facebook satellite on top) without giving a warning to the JPL team that was working on their pad. They needed to have a 4mi radius cleared to explode the rocket and ignored that. Her team was lucky that the winds were in their favor or their entire team would have been in jeopardy (they had 18 employees on the pad and only 14 of the masks that would have been needed to save their lives)
Interesting. Your friend's description suggests SpaceX exploded the rocket on purpose. But news coverage says it was an accidental failure. Maybe she has inside information.
I wonder if they didn't explode on purpose, since there was a payload, but maybe not giving enough notice of having a pressure test so other launch sites could clear out? I think SpaceX does, or used to, a pressure test X days before launch.
There is a good Sway episode about it. I think it may be good actually as he will be able to keep Elliott Mgmt (Wall Street activist investor) at bay for a bit. Musk is a blowhole, but as to providing direction for a tech co, he is preferable IMO to a bunch of Wall Street quants
My admittedly under informed take on Wall Street quants, is that most should be shot for actively trying to destroy innovation that doesn't turn a buck the first quarter.
I was in a bit of a slump mid-week but I'm currently what passes for chipper. The missus & the 17 y.o. are heading out for spring break college tours tomorrow, so I've got a quiet few days coming up.
Ugh. Every year I have a few weeks where my job becomes 24 hours a day, day after day. Like, 3 a.m. meeting, then lay down with the phone for a couple of hours, wake up at 5 a.m. and try to catch up on what I missed.
Does San Francisco Bay count as "ocean?" If so, then going west I'd be at the Alameda Naval Air Station, where not much is happening most of the time. All the way to the Pacific would have me near the Cliff House and Sutro Baths in SF, which would be pretty good.
South to the Bay would take me to Oyster Bay or Marina Park in San Leandro, which would also probably be pretty decent. All the way to the Pacific would be near Natural Bridges in Santa Cruz, which would be great.
North to an ocean-adjacent body of water would land me in or around Seattle, which sounds good. All the way to an ocean would be way up in the icy-cold Northwest Territories of Canada, near a place called Paulatuk. Probably not much fun, unless you're really interested in native Inuit culture.
East (if we're bypassing all lakes and rivers) to the Atlantic would be around Newport News or Virginia Beach. Visiting the latter would not be bad.
Sure. North I'd be at the SF Yacht Club. West I'd be on the little spot of land between Baker Beach and Marshall's Beach. East I'd be at the Exploratorium. And south I'd be in Half Moon Bay.
I do all the time. I am just across the Potomac from the National Mall so if I head east toward the ocean I'm visiting the Smithsonian Museums, National Gallery of Art. Nats Park is pretty much in line too. All within just a couple miles. Forgot to add the Kennedy Center in there too.
yup...in about 4 miles, I'd be at ocean beach. if I went north, I wouldn't get to crissy field beach (that's a bit NW), but I'd (checking map) just miss Alcatraz and end at Angel Island (altho that's heading towards a bay, not the ocean).
I'd end up at Kill Devil Hills, the site of the Wright Brothers first flight (aka, the place where brothers from Ohio decided to fly so that they could end up on North Carolina's license plate that says 'First in Flight'). KDH is fine, but the Outerbanks doesn't get nice until you go north of it.
we have friends who own a house in Corolla and while I understand why they enjoy spending large stretches of time there, I'd lose patience after a couple of days.
Absolutely not. I'd wander for a bit until I hit the Chesapeake Bay, I'd reemerge in the weird, red part of MD, cross over into Delaware farmlands (passing through several chicken farms, probably), cross the Delaware Bay, and cross 60 miles of South Jersey until my final, great descent into the Atlantic. It would be a cold, soaking journey today.
Ft. Bragg? Fayetteville, NC? America's paradise for tattoos, used Dodge Chargers, pregnant 19 year-olds, and bars where everyone is drunk and trained to kill with their hands? Man, you party hard.
It's very nice not experiencing wild market swings or drastic changes in international relations after the president tweeted some asinine talking point he saw on Fox News.

I was on Metro yesterday afternoon about the time folks were headed to opening night. I saw I guy who I've seen before at the games and he always dresses up. Yesterday he had on some kind of silk looking red pants. His shirt was red and white checked and he had a red sparkly, sequin jacket on. His shoes were white leather with stitching that looked like seams on a baseball. Finished the outfit with a red top hat. I wouldn't have the nerve to go out in public like that.
Friday Night Baseball on Apple TV+ starts tonight. I've been out of the baseball loop for a few years. I see that Hunter Pence will be part of the crew for the second game (Angels-Astros?). Also the booth for each game includes a woman, I think, one of whom is doing play-by-play, iirc). Hopefully next year, it won't warrant a mention.
[Related to that, read yesterday about a new sports bar in PDX called the Sports Bra (sic) that only shows women's sports on the TVs. If there's nothing available, the TVs will be off, to highlight the fact that there's no content available at the time.]
I bought tix for some games from a friend with season tix for Giants. Then realized that this is the first official NL DH year...ugh! [Not meaning the restart the thread from last month about the DH, where otherwise bright people brought up poor arguments in favor of the DH ;-) ]
Twins bring in a reliever in the top of the 5th inning that's throwing 100 mph. 100...in the top of the 5th and made Mitch Haniger look like a little leaguer...this is the new MLB baseball...
There are no extra tactics with no-DH, there are fewer tactics.
Every time you pinch hit for the pitcher in the late innings it's an obvious choice. Every double switch is even an obvious choice. These are not difficult tactical decisions - they are obvious and every high school coach would make them the same way as an MLB manager.
What is more difficult - not less - for a manager to decide on is whether your pitcher has one more batter left in him, or whether to stick with the lefty in a bad match-up when the next part of the order after that guy all bat left. Or whether to pinch hit based on the match-up with the pitcher.
With no DH, a lot of those actually tough decisions are taken out of the manager's hand.
It’s going to be a long season for my Pads. Between the Pads and Cal football, I am used to a lifetime sports of disappointment and underachieving. At least I’m not a Chargers fan anymore.
ESPN mic’ced up Joey Votto for a half inning, and Karl Ravech/Eduardo Perez/David Cone (actually a gem of a broadcast crew) interviewed him mid-game in ATL...it was awesome, and the dude definitely has a future in broadcasting if he chooses.
A great new feature - wonder if ESPN will try this on other telecasts...hope so.
TBS or Fox Sports (forgot which did the NL that year) did this once with Justin Turner while in the field and talked with him between pitches. That was shut down real quick when he had to tell them to give him a sec so he could get ready for the pitch.
They had the game on at Duke's seafood but with CC so I couldn't tell if he was talking during the pitch or not. But I guess postseason games have much more on the line.
He would...and there's no doubt that Votto seems like a real likable guy, and was funny...that really helped, as did having Ozzie Albies on at 1st after a basehit.
To be fair, it is a complicated system and often there were execution errors. A bit tough to rank him last, but then again we showed no signs of life on offense when Chase wasn't on the field improvising. viz..., Arizona loss.
I actually finally just read the article (only after extensively commenting about it). That Matrix Analytical guy was including the head coach in the equation so its not purely objective about the OC, and is also an indictment on Wilcox.
It's only tough for me to argue because I know close to nothing about the other playcallers in the conference. But I'm sure there are some fans of those teams who could argue that their's is the worst!
So Gene, agreed...I also think it's tough because the OC really can only control so much, right? He can't actually execute the plays. Kinda like Fox in hoops - he can't make a layup for the big man. There's plenty of evidence that the players struggled to make plays when they were definitely there to be made, with Moore's fumble at UW and Nikko's dropped TD in Eugene just some unfortunate examples.
That said, he arguably should be #12, at least if we're ranking from last year, based on the loss in Tucson and the general lack of production. Man, an OC has to be able to produce a game plan to win that game against one of the worst P5 football teams in recent memory, even with the COVID issue. The complexity of Musgrave's little "Pro-style offense" is my main concern...these are college kids, and pro-style offenses usually need professional players to properly execute. With the dearth of NFL talent on the the offensive side of the ball, as evidenced by the lack of Wilcox offensive players that end up playing on Sundays, maybe a more gimmicky type of scheme would lead to more points, and more wins. Something like Sonny's Air Raid, which the kids could learn in a matter of weeks, not years.
If this O could ever just be an average, top 8 P12 O, you're looking at 7-8 wins per year, easy...and that's one way you build a program.
Until Cal starts getting professional type players from a talent perspective, either on the OL but especially at the skill positions, it's probably fair to wonder if Musgrave's pro-style O is ever going to yield consistent success.
I generally agree, and I'm not sure what influence Wilcox has had on the offense. It sure looked like he was the one forcing that conservative style of preserving the fledgling lead, and it also looks like he's had pretty firm control over the QB situation. I was very suspicious when Glover got named QB2 basically the second he stepped on campus, particularly after Zach Johnson had arguably the best Spring out of anyone. Which leads to RE: the nightmare that was Glover @ AZ. I think the QB was the sole reason we lost that game, and I'm assuming that was 100% a Wilcox decision.
We do appear to have some talent now taking over at starting positions at WR and TE, and there's things to like about the RB committee, so I really cant wait to see what this offense looks like post Garbers (and even post-Remigio) which felt like a decade.
All said, I've been squarely neutral on Wilcox for a while, and now Musgrave, for the unfortunate reason of having lowered my expectations for the program and becoming content with mediocrity..
Would be nice if he elaborated on why Musgrave is dead last. I never got as frustrated as others about play calling specifically, but more that we were handcuffed by Chase and the receivers' inability to execute. Even the Nevada game when went away from the run, which is probably what's ingrained in many of the anti-'gravers out there. But at some point you need to have a passing game. The Oregon State game was kind of that outlier where you could see Musgrave's offense working, when the QB+WRs actually execute. I'm somewhat neutral on the 'grave, and waiting to see with the new QB and receiving corps can do.
Yeah this woman is pretty awful - every student in the same math class will solve inequality. She also charges school districts $5000/hour for consulting.
This is like 2008 and 2016 when we had to start all new at WR position with departure of stud WRs.
In 2008 we started with Sean Young and Lareylle Cunningham but they did absolutely nothing. Ended the season with Ross, Tucker and Boateng. In 2016 Chad Hansen emerged. It helped that we had veteran QBs in both situations, but this year we are uncertain at QB. There is always excitement of who is going to breakthrough.
Pretty cool story about Daniel Ellsberg, the Pentagon Papers whistleblower https://twitter.com/stevesilberman/status/1512104012987854852?s=20&t=ALU1aUvOYE31PzcQJENaog

DBD AV Club
Finished Euphoria. Need to watch a like number of hours of puppies and kittens playing to balance my brain.
Euphoria seems like a serialized version of Kids.
Yes, though more artfully delivered.
Yeah, I have read that it is a beautiful show.
It is a visually beautiful show top to bottom
Count me in the group that is not a big fan of hers. She is very pretty, but boy could her acting use some work.
finished watching the Last Kingdom. i guess i'll have to find something new to watch aside from Pretty Little Liars w/ my younger one (15).
Last night finished Rebels on Disney+ - solid Star Wars show, we've been watching 2 episodes a week. Favorite character: Hondo
i liked it but eventually gave up i think.
have you seen Bad Batch? i thought that was better, more entertaining ...
Rebels is best watched, not as a completionist, but instead through someone else's curated lists - because at its heart it is a cartoon aimed at kids. So there's a bunch of filler episodes, but its my second favorite Favreau/Filoni series.
Not yet, watching that next.
Severance s01e09 Finale
HOLY SHIT WHAT A SEASON FINALE. completed earned. I was tense the entire episode.

Bay Area Real Estate
I bought a house in south bay in 2014 for 950k. Sold in 2021 for 1.5M. (but profit went right into the next house). Today's zillow price is 2.2M.
So... a little while ago someone was surprised that a gorgeous 6,000 sq. ft. mansion sold for a million plus over asking (as if that's even a thing): a house at 1271 Spruce St in Berkeley sold for 4 Mil, basically a piece of crap that had some nice additions, zero views, that we wouldn't even pay list price (1.7 IIRC)
This market is insane.
The market is insane.
Also not that far from the goldenone pad.
We should meet up sometime.
By comparison, that mansion was a bargain.
Also, the old part of the house is pretty crappy, whereas Arch looked like a jewel.
Arch Street is a jewel inside. Shows a touch of wear on the exterior lately.
By comparison. Yes.
All markets, nationwide are insane.
I saw a 650 sq ft tear down (basically a horder's shed) on a small lot right next to the 2 freeway listed for $679k, absolutely bonkers
I just checked the price of my parents home on Zillow - it is 3x what they paid for it in 2010.
My parents is up ~4x since 98 but there was that whole real estate collapse that probably stalled the growth a bit

When I get around to watching these, like this one....well, I may have well been born back in the age of sail.
That was fucking rad.
Even after all these launches I still love watching the SpaceX launches, especially the first stage landings. Still amazed they can do that.
Hard to imagine that a Musk-related company wouldn't be following relevant rules.
Elon Musk to host town hall for employees with Twitter's CEO
Apparently many folks aren't happy with Musk's role and influence

Wait, the employees DON'T want a racist egomaniac who has already used their platform to commit crimes to have influence over the company? Weird.

Your week so far
adequate.
I was in a bit of a slump mid-week but I'm currently what passes for chipper. The missus & the 17 y.o. are heading out for spring break college tours tomorrow, so I've got a quiet few days coming up.

The good news is that it ends today.
So what you're saying is Newellbany on the DBD 24x7 starting Monday, correct?
Oh, hell yeah - I need some DBD!
Last day in Seattle for work. Yesterday it was in the low 70s so I put the top down on the rental car while driving out to Duke's to get dinner.
Good, we've still got the Axe.
Just delightful...been anxiously anticipating Top Dogs on the grill tomorrow.
Manic. Both highs and lows.
Manageably hectic
Fine
If you took a cardinal direct route (N, E, S, or W) toward the ocean from where you are, would you have a good day?
South about 800 feet to marina....Puget Sound.
probably. Sonoma/Mendocino coast
Can I go SW? That puts me at the beach (Santa Monica) a lot quicker than either W (Oxnard) or S (Long Beach)
Guess that depends on what you think of San Leandro
Does San Francisco Bay count as "ocean?" If so, then going west I'd be at the Alameda Naval Air Station, where not much is happening most of the time. All the way to the Pacific would have me near the Cliff House and Sutro Baths in SF, which would be pretty good.

And south I'd be in Half Moon Bay.
if I stopped in SF, somewhere just north of Baker Beach. If I kept going, somewhere in in Northerm Japan
Meet you just north of Baker Beach. Be sure to keep 6 feet away 😷
I'll bring the Lysol
I do all the time. I am just across the Potomac from the National Mall so if I head east toward the ocean I'm visiting the Smithsonian Museums, National Gallery of Art. Nats Park is pretty much in line too. All within just a couple miles. Forgot to add the Kennedy Center in there too.

I'd eventually hit Russia, just north of Japan.
I'd be on a boat, out in the Pacific.
Yeah. A couple times I've been invited to join friends/relatives for a week and it was fine but not all that exciting. I'm not much of a beach person.
due North - is almost always good for me, more mountains for skiing, hiking, biking.
in this case i would end up
few hours - Hudson Valley
4-5 hours - Adirondacks
6 hours - Montreal
beyond - would love to explore the Quebec wilderness .. esp the Gaspe Peninsula which is not exactly due N
"There's an ocean in every direction if you go far enough" - HSB
i forgot the "toward the ocean" part .. sorry
If you are ever in the area I'd highly recommend checking out the Noyo River area. Great seafood and a cute little neighborhood.

I bought tix for some games from a friend with season tix for Giants. Then realized that this is the first official NL DH year...ugh! [Not meaning the restart the thread from last month about the DH, where otherwise bright people brought up poor arguments in favor of the DH ;-) ]
Yay that someone is employing Katie Nolan!
Katie Nolan is a treasure.
BOOO the NL DH.
this
Nah, we don't want hitting, this is Baseball!
Twins bring in a reliever in the top of the 5th inning that's throwing 100 mph. 100...in the top of the 5th and made Mitch Haniger look like a little leaguer...this is the new MLB baseball...
it's not all about hitting. in the NBA, the "no defense" era was lame. Want scoring, but not no defense. the extra tactics of no-DH is worth it to me.
[Yay, HAG and B97! :-) ]
I totally agree. Also it is boring to watch rallies killed by the pitcher’s AB. NL DH is way, way, overdue.
Padres lose on Beer's 9th inning walk-off home run, spoiling BoMel's debut
I don't blame him for leaving, but I will not be able to get used to him there.
And Darvish's outstanding pitch
It’s going to be a long season for my Pads. Between the Pads and Cal football, I am used to a lifetime sports of disappointment and underachieving. At least I’m not a Chargers fan anymore.
haha...and it Beer's walkoff was on National Beer day.
Votto kept it going, talking during the pitch...it was awesome.

After opening day, the Baltimore Orioles are tied for first place in the AL East

How long will that last?
About 6 more hours
After that, please contact your doctor for a consultation.

Canzano ranks Musgrave dead last of PAC 12 play callers
https://johncanzano.substack.com/p/canzano-calling-out-the-best-play?s=r
To be fair, it is a complicated system and often there were execution errors. A bit tough to rank him last, but then again we showed no signs of life on offense when Chase wasn't on the field improvising. viz..., Arizona loss.
I actually finally just read the article (only after extensively commenting about it). That Matrix Analytical guy was including the head coach in the equation so its not purely objective about the OC, and is also an indictment on Wilcox.
Yup...
Tough to argue.
Interesting headline popped up in my news feed (might be old news to some):
Stanford professor branded 'Professor Karen' over email to Black UC Berkeley professor speaks out

Yeah this woman is pretty awful - every student in the same math class will solve inequality. She also charges school districts $5000/hour for consulting.
Go Bears!!!
Wilcox says Hunter, Sturdivant, and Anderson can stretch the field when queried about the lack of experience of the wideouts.
How many push-ups can Nyan Boateng do though?
I don't know. What's the story?
There's been a 14 year running discussion if Nyan Boateng or Jeremy Ross was stronger.
Here's hoping our QB has time to find them.
or that the OL can give the QB time to find them
All due respect, isn't that what I said?
reading comprehension is hard
