The Athletics dropped their series opener against the San Diego Padres on Monday evening, dropping their fourth straight game at home to open the Sutter Health Park era by a 5-4 final. Not a great way to introduce yourselves to the city of Sacramento.
For all the hype (such as it was) that ownership was spending money to improve the roster, this group just isn't cutting it. Fisher is a bad joke and his front office isn't any better. The A's franchise is an embarrassment to MLB.
Honestly, if the A's hadn't moved from Oakland this would be infuriating. Now, it's plainly enough to elicit BOOOOOs.
The San Francisco Giants got a great outing from Logan Webb Monday night. But the Cincinnati Reds got a longer outing from Hunter Greene, who shut down the boys in orange until a wild Giants bullpen lost them the game in the 8th.
The Dodgers fell behind again, and this time their comeback fell short, losing to the Nationals 6-4 on Monday night. When the final pitch of this game was thrown, the Dodgers had the tying runs on base and an MVP hitter at the plate, but it wasn’t enough with Mookie Betts grounding out to end this one.
BERKELEY – The California baseball team (17-15) pounded out a season-high 18 hits on its way to a 14-8 nonconference victory over Pacific (13-21) on Monday evening at Stu Gordon Stadium. Dominic Smaldino (3-4, 3 R, HR, 4 RBI, BB) hit his first collegiate grand slam while tying career highs for hits and RBI to key the win. Jacob French (3-3, R, 3B, 3 RBI, HBP, SF), Carl Schmidt (3-5, 2 R, 3B, 2 RBI) and Jarren Advincula (3-6, 2 R, 2B, 3B, RBI, SB) also had three hits apiece, while PJ Moutzouridis (2-4, 2 R, RBI, BB) and Seth Gwynn (2-5, R, HR, 2 RBI) added two each and eight of the Golden Bears nine starters had at least one.
On one hand, you absolutely should rock pitching that has a 6.56 ERA on the season. On the other hand, giving up eight runs to a team that has the #290th highest batting average (out of 299) is not a good look.
NAPA – Junior Adora Liu shot a 1-under par 71 and the California women's golf team placed three players in the top-15 after the first round of the Silverado Showdown on Monday at Silverado Country Club & Resort.
Liu is in a tie for sixth place individually after the first 18 holes on the par-72, 6,207-yard South course. Senior Kaylyn Noh and sophomore Constance Fouillet each fired an even-par 72 to place in a tie for 14th heading into Tuesday's second round.
he 2025 Cal Football Summer Reading Challenge will launch Saturday with a book drive and special poster giveaway at the Cal Football Spring Showcase.
The 2025 Reading Challenge, in its eighth year, will be led by redshirt junior tight end Jack Endries this summer. Endries becomes the program's fourth leader since former Golden Bear Patrick Laird created the program in 2018 to combat summer learning loss while connecting Cal football players with local schools.
California track & field's Mykolas Alekna has been named the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division I Men's Athlete of the Week, as announced by the USTFCCCA on Monday afternoon.
Alekna opened his 2025 campaign at the Brutus Hamilton Invitational last weekend, posting two throws over 70 meters and finishing with a best mark of 70.09m (229-11) to surpass the previous ACC record by over 10 feet. This is the fifth time in Alekna's career that he has received the USTFCCCA award, having also been recognized twice in both 2022 and 2023. The reigning Olympic silver medalist and world record holder currently holds the NCAA lead by three feet, one inch. He has appeared on the watch list for The Bowerman, which recognizes each year's top collegiate men's and women's track & field athlete, four times this year and 19 in his career – tied for sixth-most all-time on the men's side.
The California softball team (26-10) will play five games this week, beginning with two midweek contests before hosting No. 9/10 Florida State for a three-game series at Levine-Fricke Field this weekend.
The Golden Bears open week 10 of the 2025 season with a road game at San Jose State on Tuesday, followed by a home game against Pacific on Wednesday. The three-game set with the Seminoles – the first head-to-head meeting between the programs in 10 years – begins Friday and extends through the weekend.
Fans can get an early glimpse of the 2025 California football team at the admission-free Cal Football Spring Showcase at California Memorial Stadium on Saturday. Gates open to the public at 1 p.m. PT with the showcase beginning at 2 p.m.
Fans can enter California Memorial Stadium via Gates 1, 2 and 5 on the west side of the venue and follow signage to adjacent seating areas.
4 IN A ROW FOR LAST TIME - Cal will play its fourth game in as many days for the final time during the 2025 regular season on Monday night when it hosts Pacific in a nonconference affair. The Bears were swept in a three-game ACC series by Clemson in the first three contests of the home stand. It marked the first time in just shy of a calendar year the Bears were swept in a three-game set; Arizona took all three games of a Pac-12 series in Berkeley on April 5-7, 2024.
Five California men's gymnasts received 2025 All-MPSF recognition Monday after the Golden Bears posted their highest team score of the season at the MPSF Championships.
The All-MPSF team is composed of each squad's highest-scoring gymnast (plus one additional at-large selection regardless of team) on each event, including the all-around, at the championship meet.
Ironic that Houston was the team noted for their defense, and they did lead most of the game, almost 39 minutes, but it was a couple of key defensive stops by Florida in the last minute that won the game.
Was rooting for Houston, and Kelvin Sampson, but also impressed be Florida. With a good young coach, and the inherent advantages the Gators have in terms of location, league, and recruiting, I could see them garnering several more titles in the next 10-12 years.
Sandwiches are good eats. I'm an equal opportunity carnivore. In that vein, I enjoy Reubens, Club Sandwiches, Chicken BLT (often with avocado), Ham and Swiss, or the simple tuna fish sandwich. Burgers as a form of sandwich are also much enjoyed. My favorite cheese on a burger is a blue cheese, such as Shropshire Blue. Triple Rock Pub makes a Blue Rock Burger that is very yummy, indeed.
When we have leftover bacon and croissants, I'll make a BLTA on a croissant. I used to get them at Cal without the A at the deli that was in Lower Sproul.
I like both Genova Deli in WC and Molinari and Sons in SF. At Molinari and Sons, I used to always get the Roast Beef sandwich on sourdough roll, but the last few times I've been getting the Luciano special. Prosciutto di Parma, Sweet or Hot Coppa, Fresh Mozzarella, Sun Dried Tomatoes, Onions, and Lettuce on Grilled Focaccia Bread.
Molinari and Sons is also where I go to get my Type 00 pizza dough. Cheaper than other places. Usually I don't need to make a special trip since I'll be in the city just often enough.
Togo's is my favorite among chains since I was an undergrad. We had a deal with the Togo's on Bancroft for two lunches a week. Can't go wrong with #16, #9 or the Triple Dip. Jersey Mike's is very good too.
I don't east sandwiches unless I am traveling. Generally too much bread.
That being said, the La Farm at Raleigh-Durham Airport has a Le Parisien good enough to make Frenchmen homesick. Their poulet sandwich is pretty great too.
Hold on to your butts. Trump doubles-down against China, says he'll implement another 50% tariff on Chinese goods starting at 0:01am on Wednesday. Including the 20% tariff that previously had a deminimus exemption and the previous 34% tariff, that's a 104% tariff.
On this news, I just dumped a big chunk of USD and converted it to EUR. Trump negotiates like a petulant child. He thinks the Chinese will cave because they export 5x as much as they import from the US. If he thinks the Chinese are willing to lose face over this, I think he's mistaken. And what's his end game? Get China to yet again commit to buying billions of dollars of US beef and soybeans that they never purchase like they did his last term?
WHEN YOU GOOGLE SOMEONE
The top Google search for my name is a Docter at Penn. My parents are ashamed.
I'm 95% sure that I'm the only person in the world with my name, so very easy to find.
I googled a woman I dated briefly in college. She had an uncommon last name so I reasoned that she'd be easy enough to find. I found three people with her name. One was the woman in question who is now a university professor, another was a high school volleyball player and the third was a porn actress.
"What's that, Honey? Was I looking up an old girlfriend? Absolutely not. I was looking at porn."
Two comments:
1. You should've let us guess which one you dated. Hilarity would've ensued.
2. Who is the porn actress? Asking for a friend.
Number one is fair point. As to number two, she's a porn not born actress and I feel uncomfortable giving the prof and high school girl's name.
I hope Professor Candy Juggs is doing well.
I figured it was a long shot. Can't blame a guy for trying!

Crazy close game in MBB final. Houston down by two against Florida with 12 seconds to go and the ball to try to win it.

same. i was rooting for Houston. they played good solid D but seemed to have a hard time scoring themselves as the lead slipped away.
Houston's offense looked a little like Cal's down the stretch. Ugly and reliant on individual play.

Subway is garbage.
I loved Togo's as well. #16 for me. I recently had Ike's a few times and I like the options they have.
I don't east sandwiches unless I am traveling. Generally too much bread.

I'm not familiar with the concept of "too much bread".
i generally eat less sandwiches than before as well. i still like them. a good chicken salad sandwich is one of my favorites.

There have been many moments in the past few days when I wished I kept my political engagement account on Twitter so I can unleash some pettiness.
