Xylaria polymorpha, commonly known as “dead man's fingers”. As its name suggests, it has a very variable but often club-shaped fruiting body (stroma) resembling burned wood. Often this fungus is found with a multitude of separate "digits" but at times the individual parts will be fused together.
Apart from at a funerary event, have you ever seen a dead body?
Finished the last 6 episodes of Night Agent (4 yesterday and 2 today). Some surprising things that didn't happen but overall I enjoyed it. Was tempted to watch the last 2 episodes at about 1045 last night but didn't since I had a 7 AM call.
it's for sharing comments to the substack Notes function / feed apparently (inasmuch as I restacked your comment to see what would happen). NASCAR racer's best Cup Series finish was 6th at the 2022 Dayton 500, but he typically finishes in the 30s. He has been suspended and this just proves that he's a choke job.
The A’s opened up a four-game series against the Orioles Monday night at beautiful Camden Yards in Baltimore. Lefty J.P. Sears (0-0) got the start for the A’s against O’s righty Kyle Gibson (2-0).
The A’s got on the board first against Gibson when Aledmys Diaz walked. Then on the 12th pitch of his at-bat, Ramon Laureano tripled to the right field corner scoring Diaz. Laureano’s RBI broke the A’s 18 inning scoreless streak, and they jumped ahead 1-0.
If you remove the names from the back of the jerseys, and the faces from underneath the shiny helmets, the story of the Los Angeles Dodgers 9-1 win over the San Francisco Giants is quite simple. One team capitalized on their opportunities, and the other team did not.
Both teams got their initial runs on solo home runs — a leadoff drive by Mookie Betts and a fourth-inning moonshot by Wilmer Flores.
I was in attendance last night, eating a Scootie approved crab sandwich from Crazy Crab, and I heard someone calling my name - my freshman year roommate from Unit III was sitting two rows behind me and 5 seats over with his kids. I actually missed the grand slam because I was catching up.
When I checked over the weekend, prices were actually pretty good. Probably because they were midweek games. I found a ticket for like 110 only about 10 rows up just to the left of home plate. If I hadn't torn my achilles, I probably would have gone to a game this week. Just a pain to have to hobble around the ballpark.
After a slump to open the season, Max Muncy took a step back, then took it out on the Giants. Muncy hit two home runs and drove in seven in the Dodgers’ 9-1 win over the Giants on Monday night’s series opener at Oracle Park.
Muncy’s struggles this season and last have been well documented, from the elbow injury to bad swing habits to using a step-back in his swing. He entered the series with just four hits in 33 at-bats, with 16 strikeouts, including just 1-for-15 with seven strikeouts since his first home run, which came last Tuesday.

BERKELEY – The Cal baseball team wasted little time putting runs on the board and finished the night with an exclamation point, scoring seven runs in the bottom of the seventh to win 14-2 over visiting Nevada on Monday night at Stu Gordon Stadium.
Cal (13-15) scored five runs in the first two innings, more than enough run support for starter Andres Galan (2-1) who tossed his second-straight quality start.
SANTA CRUZ – Aaron Du became just the third golfer to shoot a seven-under par 63 at the Western Intercollegiate as he tied the tournament's low 18-hole record and led the California men's golf team to the top of the leaderboard after one round played at Pasatiempo Golf Club on Monday.
The Golden Bears shot a collective 16-under 334 in the first round and own a one-stroke lead on a talented 14-team field that features nine top-50 teams, including five ranked among the top 25. No. 22 Oregon (-15) and No. 8 Stanford (-11) claimed second and third place, respectively, at the first round's conclusion.
BERKELEY – The California softball team takes a break from Pac-12 Conference play this week with a Tuesday midweek game at Sacramento State followed by a three-game series at UNLV on Friday-Sunday.
First pitch between the Golden Bears and Hornets is set for 4 p.m. PT on Tuesday. The Bears and Rebels open with a 6 p.m. PT start on Friday, 3 p.m. PT first pitch on Saturday and the two teams wrap up the series in Las Vegas at noon on Sunday.
BERKELEY – Cal fans can get a sneak preview of the upcoming football season and enjoy a wide array of fun activities throughout the day during the admission-free Cal Football Spring Showcase at California Memorial Stadium on Saturday, April 15. Gates open to the public at 12:30 p.m. PT with Pac-12 Networks' live coverage and the scrimmage beginning at 2 p.m.
BERKELEY – Fresh off a jam-packed home meet in which the Golden Bears set "bests" galore, California track & field has a quick turnaround this week as it travels south to Walnut for the prestigious Mt. SAC Relays at Hilmer Lodge Stadium on Wednesday-Saturday.
Cal currently has 12 total event squads ranked in the NCAA's top 25; of those, five are ranked in the top three (men's discus, women's hammer, men's pole vault, men's hammer, men's decathlon).
As an aspiring pre-med, Anatomy was a required course, taught by Marian C Diamond. Lab work involved many cadavers, a few brains, and too many histology slides for my liking. The human body is quite a complex machine. Great class.
Worked IT for a hospital system where the IT offices were in the basement right next to the morgue. Was a regular occurrence to see the dead bodies being transported.
I was always impressed by the formality of the funeral home workers who were coming to pick the bodies. Even "out of sight" in these basement corridors, everything was always very thoughtful and respectful.
See a handful from road accidents (one on the 57 in LA pinned under an overturned semi-truck and one on the San Mateo Bridge, also pinned under a car), the Human Body exhibition in the Beijing Anthropology Museum and a couple of open casket funerals. Two years ago, one of my good friend's semi-estranged brother came back from drying out in Taiwan at a drug rehab center, went into Covid quarantine in Shanghai and passed away during quarantine - years of drug abuse took their toll. My friend was stuck in Singapore, as were her parents, so I was one of 5 mourners (me, another of Vanessa's friends in Shanghai, and the guy's ex-wife and her brother and nephew). Very odd to go to a funeral for someone who you didn't know - but my main job was a to Facetime what was happening.
In the poorer parts of India, they roll the dead up into rugs or sheets of plastic and then stack them at the corner of main highway intersections for pickup. The last one that I saw was on the way to the Taj Mahal - a rug with toes sticking out the bottom.
Only time I can think of seeing a dead body was some poor homeless guy who gave up the ghost across Jefferson from the SC campus, at the beginning of the "pedestrian mall" out to university apartments and the row.
and along the lines of a funerary event and cremation, the burning of the bodies out in the open in Benares (Varanasi) along the Ganges River is a sure path to "something" they say.
that is quite a sensory experience of sights and sounds and smells. i don't they think they are allowed to just toss things into the river anymore ..
That reminds me that I spent a few hours watching the ceremonies along the river when I was in Kathmandu. Also watching the monkeys running around the hillside.

my wife was a medical student once upon a time. so i have seen Fred, the cadaver that she worked on for an entire year in anatomy class.
it is pretty neat to see all the inner workings of the human body.
Never seen one other than at a funeral. And even then, it's only been a couple. Pretty much all the folks I've known who passed on were cremated.

i have been to some one ceremony (my aunt) where you see the dead person in a casket and then they cremate the body. i thought it was a strange combo.
