Nice one OD, thanks for continuing to bring us chuckles.

that was the funniest thing you said all day

Something that has become much rarer these days and not directly due to a technology change

fewer and fewer good snowstorms in NY and long winters for skiing.

Common sense and decency. Political polarization is only partly to blame. Much of the decline is due to people overreacting to a changing world.

Seeing children -- ages seven to twelve -- off on their own. When I was a wee lad (and dinosaurs roamed the Earth) I used to walk to school and my friends and I wandered everywhere especially in the Summer. We even used to organize our own baseball games. Somehow our culture has since decided that children must be under constant adult supervision. Don't know when this happened nor why.

Expand full comment

Yes, totally. I was born in 79 and would wander around, organize games at schoolyard, go to card store, other ppl’s houses starting in about third grade. But now play dates are more point to point. I have no idea why!

Expand full comment

I guess, but that happened the year I was born and I and all my friends in every place I lived (I moved 7 times) had free range childhoods

How about politeness and civility? Though I guess you could blame that on social media.

Chicken-apple kofte. I've taken to roasting these little meatballs of minced chicken meat, gelatin, minced apple, mirpoix, Better Than Bouillon (chicken) and spices in the oven. Apple's fructose has too too low of a carmelization temperature, so will burn before the chicken browns if I do it in a frying pan. So I roast it on a wire rack to get an all-over brown. Bouillon is my little secret cheat - it boosts the flavor of any mass market meat to taste more like the meat. Factory meat tends to grow too fast, so this makes it more chicken-y. Gelatin (alternatively, an egg) is used because I use white meat, which lacks the springiness of fat. It makes the meatballs texture superior, offering more flex/snap rather than crumble.

I'm picturing Salma Hayek slapping me across the face with various produce.

Expand full comment

While I wouldn't enjoy Salma slapping me, honestly I'd rank it #1 just for the experience and bragging rights. I'd have a picture taken and put it on a t-shirt. I can have beets, artichokes, asparagus, eggplant, and lettuce anytime I want.

Expand full comment

I love artichokes, beets and asparagus, iceberg lettuce is okay, not an eggplant fan. A slap across the face is not the kind of physical contact I'd most want from Salma Hayek.

Ohhhh, this one's tough...

Artichokes, asparagus, beets, iceberg lettuce, Salma Hayek, eggplant.

The top three are really close, and the top two are almost interchangeable.

Shōgun S1 E8. "The Abyss of Life". (Hulu, 19/19 WB). This show is like a Japanese garden -painstakingly planned, hyper-manicured, and razor sharp execution just to make everything look so natural. This episode does not spoon fed you details. Everything is super subtle. Eye contact. Word selection. Vocabulary. It's all so precise. As each major character hits a significant inflection point in this episode. I rewound several parts just to make sure that I got all the dialogue and re-watch details. This show is top notch.

Tough choice: 1.) watch the Warriors on TV tonight, once again in a low rung play-in game or 2.) attend, in person, the Cal baseball game vs. USF at beautiful Stu Gordon Stadium at Evans Diamond. I’m leaning towards the latter. The Bears, who are riding a four game win streak (including a road sweep of the Cougs), have already reached twenty wins on the season (out of 34 games played). Pitching of late is rounding into form. Power from the plate returned with a vengeance in the 10-run outburst of the ninth inning of Saturday’s game, then continued Sunday when the Blue and Gold erupted for 17 hits. Keep it rolling. Gob Ears!
