Tax filing due today, peasants

Did mine Fri afternoon. Thought I had to worry about looking for my achilles bills but I used my HSA so I couldn't put them on my taxes since I've already taken advantage of a pre-tax situation.

hit the send button on TurboTax last night. our taxes are not that complicated, w2 income plus whatever is in brokerage account so i can get by w/o a professional accountant.

what takes the longest is the reconciliation between TurboTax and my custom spreadsheet that i made 20+ years ago that mostly replicates the tax bill line-by-line.

this year i discovered a new tax - Net Investment Income Tax - that was semi significant for the first time. basically a 3.8% surcharge above some threshold on investment income.

this one startup company had medium-sized exit that we all got paid out from finally which caused the investment income to look abnormally high compared to other years. hopefully just a one-time thing i have to worry about.

Trump Media & Technology are down nearly 20% as the Company filed an S-1 to issue more shares equal to about a 20% dilution and most of existing shareholders essentially sell out of the company - quintupling the free-float of the shares. Essentially any rube who buys the shares to a company that Trump owns little to none of and has very little incentive to see survive. A fool and their money soon parted. I am grabbing popcorn to watch how fast this stock craters.

Snell still not Snell-like in second start

It’s safe to say that Blake Snell is feeling the effects of a bizarre spring. Those reps in Arizona, as trivial and inconsequential as they appear at the time, are quite the opposite. Physically unwinding the arm; mentally, acclimating to the mound—it pays to play in February and March, and Snell didn’t.

Protesters blocking all lanes of Northbound I-880 in Oakland, CHP says

https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/world/protesters-involved-in-worldwide-blockade-close-all-lanes-of-northbound-i-880-in-oakland-chp-says/ar-BB1lECJ9?ocid=entnewsntp&pc=U531&cvid=9dda412e9bdf443fa5b27b9f6ae9584c&ei=10

Protesters have blocked all lanes of Northbound I-880 in Oakland Monday morning, CHP confirms.

The protest is happening at 5th Ave., where there are said to be 15 people blocking the road.

Traffic backup on I-880 due to a protest blocking lanes.

Traffic is backing up and there is no estimated time of when the highway will reopen.

The protest is happening from the Oakland Economic Blockade Against Palestinian Genocide, alongside 56 cities around the world. Organizers say "thousands" will gather at the West Oakland BART station on Monday.

Protests have blocked traffic in other major cities Monday morning, including Chicago at O'Hare Airport.

=================================================================

COMMENT: slow southbound traffic on I-880 is visible from my workstation, while northbound traffic seems to be moving at the limit. I imagine that southbound traffic is impacted by rubberneckers, while northbound traffic is past the point of the blockade.

Expand full comment

I simply do not understand what positive effect these protests could possibly have. It's not like the war in Gaza is lacking for attention these days. And if you're not raising awareness, then all you're doing is inconveniencing people with no power to change the situation.

I am sympathetic to their position, but these protest tactics seem counterproductive to me.

Expand full comment

I share your perspective. I feel these protests are counterproductive for the simple reason they antagonize people who otherwise agree that the war in Gaza must stop.

Protests are meaningless unless it puts pressure where pressure can be effective.
