our best unintended parenting move ... we once stuck our older child in a 3-day timeout for hitting the nanny and removed everything except the books (she was 4).

at the end of the 3 days she had taught herself to read because there was nothing else to do.

blueberries.

in general wild berries are a great thing. i was once on a hiking Norway and there were fresh blueberries and clean river water everywhere. it certainly helped keep the 3 yr entertained on an overly aggressive and optimistic 7 mile hike we did. i ended up carrying her a good fraction of the way, but w/o the blueberries it would have been much harder ..

Finally, some consequences for Trump and his witness tampering. Judge Merchan has now prohibited him and his defense team from knowing who upcoming witnesses are. Good luck trying to build a cross-examination strategy at the last second, bozo.

the oldest of the 5 monuments in pro-cycling, which are the most prestigious one-days races aside from the World Championships.

it is one of the few days of the year that i make Liege wafels, the fat ones w/ the caramelized pearl sugar inside.

Pogacar, former TdF winner, looks to stop current world champ, Mathieu Van der Poel, from winning 3 of 4 monuments so far this season.

Declare something to the DBD in the spirit of the “protester”/"protestor". Dictionary says either spelling is correct.

Expand full comment

What do you guys think of the protestors stopping traffic on the GG Bridge and stuff?

I think there is a very strong desire of young folks to find an injustice and resist it in a public way, which in general is probably a good thing. But this conflict is so incredibly long and complicated - it just doesn’t lend itself well to the simplistic analysis of a ten second TikTok. A much easier conflict from a moral perspective is the war in Ukraine, but the news cycle seems to have mostly moved on from it.

Yes! Ok, I was talking to younger folk at work yesterday about this. They seemed generally sympathetic to the protestors, but I asked this exact question - how does making ppl late for work, potentially losing wages for any hourly worker, help convince ppl to join you? Why not just do a regular march type peaceful protest? Their answer was “oh but now you are talking about the issue.” I let it stop there, but honestly the only thing we talked about was whether or not the protestors are assholes, not the Gaza war itself

Btw Brooke Jenkins was my law school classmate (in my writing section too) and I always liked her bc she was head to toe in Cal gear every day (ran track in undergrad), but I think she should have prosecuted ppl for blocking the bridge more. It will keep happening if ppl that do it don’t get any jail time

NYC yield event tonight .. this is where they invite the newly admitted students to a reception and show them some love in an effort to get them to accept their admission offers.

quite often the same kids that get into Cal out-of-state are also admitted to the Ivy's and Stanford, etc ...

there are quite a few kids that have already decided, in fact most of them. often the parents just want a warm fuzzy feeling that someone cares.

it used to be quite informal when i moved here in 2000. nowadays they send Cal admissions and financial aid people and there are at least 10 reminders that "they are not imposters, they really did get in and deserve to go to Cal". this is a recent thing ..

good chance for me to wear my Cal tie. i was consdering my new blue and gold Hawaiian shirt though ..
