BERKELEY – With seeding in the upcoming Pac-12 Championship on the line, the 28th-ranked California men's tennis team travels to the Pacific Northwest this week to conclude the regular season. The Golden Bears (11-8, 3-3 Pac-12) face 55th-ranked Oregon (12-11, 1-5) on Friday at 1:30 p.m. PDT at the Student Tennis Center and take on 56th-ranked Washington (10-10, 1-5) on Sunday at noon. BERKELEY – Makena Smith etched her name into the record book as the California softball team rallied past Santa Clara, 9-8, in 13 innings on Wednesday at Levine-Fricke Field.
Down to their final strike in the 11th inning after giving up four runs in the top half, Smith hit a three-run homer, the 42nd of her career to tie the game and move into a tie for fifth all-time at Cal (Lindsey Ziegenhirt, 2010-13) in career home runs.
PHOENIX – Graduate student Annika Borrelli shot par or better for the third straight day at the Pac-12 Championships, leading the California women's golf team to a sixth place finish at Papago Golf Course.

BERKELEY – The No. 1 California men's rowing team will head on the road to take on No. 3 Washington at the Montlake Cut in Seattle on Saturday. The annual race between the two programs dates back to 1903 and is one of the oldest rivalries in rowing. Cal will be sending its top four boats along with a freshman eight.
The matchup between two of the top teams in men's collegiate rowing will be for the Schoch Cup, given to the winner of the varsity eight race each year. The cup is named after Delos Schoch of Washington's class of 1936. Schoch lettered three years (1934-36) as a Husky rower.

Friday and Sunday's game will be televised on the Pac-12 Network with Tyler Peterson on the call. Saturday's game will be streamed on the Cal Live Stream with Jim Darby handling play-by-play duties.
Cal (17-16, 5-13 Pac-12), which has won five of its last six games, is coming off an impressive hitting display against USF when the Bears scored a season-high 17 runs. Cal has scored nine or more runs in five of its last six contests, including 10 or more in three straight games.

That's what I said to my best friend, Daniel, immediately following my first California Athletics all-staff meeting in February.
As we ate lunch in his car, we talked about the wild journey that led us to Cal. We laughed at my genuine disbelief that we now worked in a place where we could get free burritos and dessert in exchange for simply attending a meeting. Now that's what I call a perk.
Graduate student Peanut Tuitele just wrapped up a five-year playing career this past season with the California women's basketball team and is in the process of completing her master's in education from the UC Berkeley School of Education. Perhaps that is why Tuitele is perfectly suited for the next stage of her basketball career – calling plays instead of executing them on the court.
As part of her entry into the coaching realm, she applied and was accepted into the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) "So You Want To Be A Coach" program. The program assists female collegiate basketball players who are interested in pursuing a career in coaching women's basketball by providing them with professional development and career advancement through education, skills enhancement, networking and exposure opportunities. The program also increases awareness regarding the availability of talented female basketball players who want to coach.
Madison Bumgarner was designated for assignment Thursday by the Arizona Diamondbacks, who will eat more than $34 million remaining on the veteran left-hander's contract, sources told ESPN.
Bumgarner, who signed a five-year, $85 million deal with Arizona before the 2020 season, has struggled during his four years with the Diamondbacks, posting a 5.23 ERA over 69 starts. Perhaps his worst outing with Arizona came Wednesday, when he allowed seven runs in three innings against the St. Louis Cardinals and saw his 2023 ERA balloon to 10.26.
The losing streak continues. Oakland dropped their seventh straight game today, losing 12-2 and getting swept by the Cubs. They lost every game this home stand. Owch.
It was a special day at the Coliseum as top pitching prospect Mason Miller made his major league debut. A leadoff single ruined the chance of a debut no-hitter but Miller showed why the team brought him up after only 28 2⁄3 innings in the minor leagues. He got a line out double play to escape the first, then struck out the side in the second inning in impressive fashion. His first career K? Former MVP Cody Bellinger:
The San Francisco Giants did not get off to a good start on Wednesday against the Miami Marlins. Which, bizarrely enough, constituted a good start.
Perhaps you remember my recap of Tuesday’s loss. If not, here’s the refresher: the Giants had lost five straight games. In all five of those games, they scored the first run. In four of those five games, that run came in the first inning. In the other, it came in the second inning.
So when Thairo Estrada led off the game with a single, you kind of tilted your head to the side and winced. And when Darin Ruf drew a one-out walk, you grimaced.
Noah Syndergaard did his part, but the bullpen spoiled multiple comeback opportunities, conceding insurance runs just at the right time for the Mets, as the Dodgers dropped the rubber match 5-3 Wednesday, falling to to 9-10 on the season.
The Dodgers lost four of six games on the homestand.
An early ejection to Max Scherszer over foreign substance usage gave the Dodgers plenty of chances to punish the Mets bullpen, but Jimmy Yacabonis was the unsung hero for the Mets, holding down the fort, recording eight outs to bridge the gap to David Robertson and Adam Ottavino
Orel Hershiser is one of the Dodgers TV announcers and he seemed to be siding with Scherzer. Said that rosin, which is allowed, gets sticky when it gets wet. And Scherzer goes to his mouth a lot. Granted he switched gloves like the umpire asked and I guess they found more of it after he came back out. But if it really was just rosin then the HP umpire was wrong. Also, this is the same umpire that had the staredown with MadBum earlier in the year.
According to Vegas' newspaper of record, the Oakland A's are moving to Las Vegas and they've already bought the land on the old Tropicana site right near the airport.
Bingo. The Oakland stadium plans never seemed serious.
I'm also not sure that Las Vegas is going to be all that great an MLB market (there is not much of a TV market there), but clearly they've had there eyes on that for a while.
It'll probably be lots of out of town fans there to watch their team and enjoy LV. Sorta like Raider games. Won't be much of a home field advantage, and it's not like Fisher is going to want to spend on his team.
Football is a much better sport to do this with, though. People can fly into Vegas on Saturday and go to the Raiders game on Sunday. It's a nice weekend excursion. No one is going to fly in for a Wednesday night game vs. the Royals.
Baseball is so much more regional though, and I am not sure how much folks in LV care. They got the Raiders already, which is a much bigger deal, and have a good NHL franchise. Are they really hankering that badly for the worst team in the MLB?
Oakland has no more teams. Should be an opportunity for Cal Athletics to expand the audience footprint. But so far they have not been able to capitalize on this trend.
It appears as if Cal has more of a relationship with SF than Oak? I understand SF has the FiDi. But, the original campus and the UC headquarters are in the Town. Small running backs
Thurman Thomas
Jaquizz Rodgers and Darren Sproles are both 5-6
Rodgers was the human embodiment of spite on a football field and I respect that
Is Sofele
Justin Forsett
Khalfani Muhammad -- who in my opinion was a more effective short yardage back than the hulking Vic Enwere
Dave Meggett
Ott. he seems small to me.
on the subject of big Cal running backs, Anthony Wallace.
Isi Sofele and CJ Anderson were both 5'8"
UH WHAT!?! Isi and CJ were the same size? Mind blown.
Same height does not mean same size.
Barry Sanders - does he count? he always looked short to me.
he is in my opinion the best running back of all time!

experimenting w/ zero-proof cocktails for weeknight drinking.
it is not fully zero-proof, but i use a tequila/whisky/gin substitute and still use the traditional mixers like vermouth and Campari.
ideally i would only drink the good stuff on weekends, but seems like a bit of a stretch. maybe a couple times a week would be a good goal.
the low-alcohol beers have come a long way too.

This sounds like you're taking to heart the recent zero calories zero fat ruling from the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals.
I mean, Campari's almost 60 proof. That's really stretching the definition of "zero proof."
... and that, kids, is how your father created his alcopop empire

That was my thought as well.

Fuck Fisher.
That is all.
Btw, when I went to the A’s game on Tuesday, there was still a “Rooted in Oakland” sign over the e trance to the parking lot. So absurd and lazy
