My kid invited me to go anywhere in August. I felt blessed that she wants to do anything with her old man. We chose Ireland for a week-long driving adventure. We're not looking to go anyplace specific - just beauty and vibes. I have only been in Dublin for a quick meeting, so haven't really seen any of Ireland. Does anybody have any recommendations?

we did a weeklong guided bike trip plus another week on our own. flew in/out of Shannon, i think. the bike tour was more south west, ie Ring of Kerry, Dingle, Killarney. Kenmare, and all very nice

the northwest part is more rugged and green (if such a thing is possible). places include Galway, Connemara, Donegal, Slieve League (a good hike with amazing views). we did this part driving around on our own.

the good thing is that every small town has a lively pub and people spontaneously breaking into song.

No buts, no cuts, no coconuts. California goes after CLEAR. Today I learned that Clear is a private company. I thought they were a government initiative.

There is no guarantee that CLEAR is adding any value to airport security. In fact, entities that should be in favor of enhanced security or at least meeting minimum security standards established by TSA, are opposed to that very thing by their opposition to the bill - airlines and the California Airports Council.

The opposition stinks. I think Scootie hit the nail on the head - it's straight up elitist 1% snobbery.

Pecker examined at Trump trial.

David Pecker - the publisher of the National Enquirer took the stand. While he is a former friend/business partner of Trump, he is not a hostile witness to the prosecution. He is detailing how Trump paid him to catch-and-kill scoops of his various affairs with Stormy Daniels and Karen McDougal. Defense is going for "this isn't illegal, but we're setting Michael Cohen up for a lie-on-the-stands Mark Furman moment". Prosecution is going for "this isn't illegal, but falsifying business records is illegal which is the whole point of the trial" tact.

Prosecutors have strong evidence - a key-eye witness Matthew Colangelo - who saw Trump agree with Pecker to pay to catch and kill the Stormy Daniels and Karen McDougal stories and agree to launder the expense through Michael Cohen via bogus legal fees. It's only Day 1 of the jury portion and prosecution has already laid out damning evidence against Trump before getting to their star witness - Michael Cohen.

Shogun (Hulu, S1 E9 Crimson Sky). This episode had a very brief confrontation with insanely little details. Period-appropriate language & manners. Guards who actually master swordsmen rather than covering with jump cuts. A few seconds of combat leaves fingers and heads flying, and men with a lifetime of training sacrificing themselves in unwinnable combat simply to prove a political point. Not melodramatic, just brutal and unblinking loyalty/death. This episode is an instant classic episode.

[BASE] Bears Sweep No. 5 Beavers

https://calbears.com/news/2024/4/21/baseball-bears-complete-the-sweep-over-the-beavers.aspx

BERKELEY – The California baseball team completed the sweep over No. 5 Oregon State winning 4-3 on Sunday afternoon at Stu Gordon Stadium. The Golden Bears got another clutch performance from Seth Gwynn who drove in three, including a 2-run home run in the fourth.

This is huge. I don’t know why WFC doesn’t feature baseball more. Now is the time for front page: eight straight wins, six straight in PAC 12 play. Lots of great stories: Seth Gwynn with 3 HR’s vs the Beavers, emerging star freshmen (Moutzouridis, Advincula, Newmann, etc.) and excellent draft prospects (Lomavita, Green Jr., etc) coming up big on this squad. Attendance very good at The Stu this weekend.

Expand full comment

Agree this is huge. Up until now, Cal has been winning the series they're expected to win (UConn, UCLA, Wazzou) and loosing those they're expected to loose (Oregon, Utah, Arizona, ASU). I'd have been thrilled to see them take two of three here but to sweep feels like a huge statement win. It's a "we belong in the post-season" statement. RPI Jumped from 75 to 48 this weekend.

About that map...

3 of the 4 counties with the highest average individual wage are in the Bay Area (San Francisco, San Mateo, and Santa Clara counties). The 4th county is actually a Federal District.

Expand full comment

I also call BS on the labelling. I don't think it's individual wage, I think it's household income. In North Carolina, Durham County is highlighted as having a high salary. People in Durham County do not make more money than their neighbors in Wake County, but they do have a cultural propensity to live in larger households.

It would be interesting to know the source of the data. I get that anyone can create a map like this through the website shown on the map. What isn't apparent is the data source or the data. One imagines the Bureau of Labor as a possible source, or the IRS, or...?

I also find it interesting that there are *only* three counties in the US with average incomes of $20-$29K. Using the color coding, they're not hard to find. One is in Nebraska and two are in Missouri. It's interesting that some of the bordering counties are two tiers greater in average income.
