OSKI DISCIPLE’S TRIVA FUN, A DAILY DBD FEATURE

According to presidential historians, Bess Truman's safe word was “girdle.”

(All trivia verified by the International Trivia Foundation.)

The Trivia Fun series on DBD has concluded. It was funded by a Pell Grant and the National Endowment for the Arts.

Next time you’re in Moose Jaw Saskatchewan, Canada be sure to visit the International Trivia Foundation’s headquarters. Guided tours of the facilities leave on the hour from 9:00 to 4:00 everyday. You can also visit the ITF Museum and the Trivia Hall of Fame — both of which are on ITF grounds. Meanwhile take a virtual tour and visit the ITF’s online gift shop by visiting their website.

Below you’ll find some bonus trivia for your enjoyment and edification that only recently received ITF verification.

George Washington is to date our only Chinese-American president.

Psychologists are reportedly baffled by people claiming that they didn’t know whether to laugh or cry.

In the original script for 2001: A Space Odyssey, instead of a monolith there was a barber’s pole.

At the end of World War I Kaiser Wilhelm explained that it had all been a misunderstanding.

I would have loved a barber pole in 2001. Yellowed with age and a ton of dead gnat bodies trapped inside, with a dependable light still working in it despite no electricity and the faint whirring noise it made as it spun around.

Or a stripper pole that played Warrant's "Cherry Pie" super loud when touched.

Athletics come up short in 4-3 loss to Yankees

https://www.athleticsnation.com/2024/4/23/24138698/athletics-vs-yankees-recap

A big first inning was more than the Oakland Athletics and Paul Blackburn could overcome in a 4-3 loss to the New York Yankees Tuesday night.

Oakland wasn’t able to scratch a run across in Monday’s opener until the ninth inning. They started quickly Tuesday. Brent Rooker fell behind 0-2 against Marcus Stroman, but hung in and worked a walk. Seth Brown followed with a sinking line drive to right that Juan Soto was unable to come up with on a diving attempt. As the ball kicked away, Rooker kept right on running and scored to give Paul Blackburn a 1-0 lead.

Whoever first decided that baseball games, known for their slowly-unfolding narratives and leisurely turns, should instead operate quickly, would have been been beside themselves watching the start of Tuesday night’s MLB game between the San Francisco Giants and New York Mets.

If you’re one of those sweet folks who realizes at 6:46 p.m. that the game started at 6:45, and then grabs a beer before turning on the TV, you likely missed the top half of the first inning, when Logan Webb set down the side on just eight pitches. You might even have missed the bottom half of the inning, when Luis Severino did the same, but on 12 pitches.

Reggie Bush to have Heisman Trophy returned

https://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/40014492/reggie-bush-heisman-trophy-returned

Reggie Bush is getting his 2005 Heisman Trophy back, as the Heisman Trust announced Wednesday the formal "reinstatement" of the trophy to Bush amid what it calls "enormous changes in the college football landscape."

seems kinda strange to me .. either enforce the rules or dont. seems like they are just opening themselves up for all sorts of revisionist historical situations.

what if they allow players to bet on baseball someday? will they apologize to Pete Rose?

Expand full comment

I think the weird thing though is not so much the change in rules now but the fact that probably most of the other Heisman winners in the same area did similar things - you hear more and more stories about that now that the rules changed. Like the one the other day about Cam Newton

maybe they will give Armstrong back his 7 TdF wins when they realize EVERYONE in cycling is doping!!

i dont think he deserves it based on the level of conspiracy that he engaged in. hopefully the current era of cycling is much cleaner, yet it still clearly happens.

Expand full comment

IMO that level of cheating (doing something to gain an in game advantage) can never be excused or forgiven as it destroys the sport itself.

Violating rules ancillary to the game like the Reggie Bush thing are just totally different

Expand full comment

Are they truly totally different?

The rules as laid out in 2005 and before were meant to help level the playing field between institutions (schools) competing against other schools. It was done to restrict the money advantage some institutions had (and still have) over other, less wealthy, institutions.

Competition between institutions would be muted if not restricted to a select few if there had been no rules about recruiting and compensating athletes. The emphasis of the rules in existence in 2005 were to reward "amateurism" which was the raison d'etre of the NCAA to begin with.

NIL has blown that out of the water. The NCAA as we know it is a dead man walking (metaphorically speaking). It would not surprise me to find that the NCAA's powers will have shriveled dramatically within the next 20 years; possibly to the point of the institution itself no longer existing.

The schools with the greatest power seem intent on exploiting the CFP to make as much money as possible, without regard to the future implications to the sport itself. College football draws closer and closer to the NFL in how it looks and feels to fans. The two minute warning will be a thing in college football games this season or in 2025.

FSU and Clemson seem intent on leaving the ACC to make more $$$ in the B1G or the SEC. Whither the ACC and the Big XII? What's there to sustain the ACC and Big XII as power conferences?

This may have the effect of curtailing interest in football among the fanbase that falls outside of the B1G and the SEC. With a path to the National Championship cut off for schools outside the B1G and the SEC, where's the interest; the reason for following the sport?

I am remarkably pessimistic about the future of college football for the first time ever in my life. Schools that recently had been Power 5 institutions will seriously consider dropping football and thereby endangering intercollegiate athletics at many institutions sometime in the next 20 years. NIL has had an effect, yes. But the powers shaping college football's landscape by way of the CFP and conference realignment do not seem to be worried about the Group of 5 much less schools in the Big XII, ACC, and what was the Pac-12.

Btw I think a lot of what we are seeing re CFB is a shift in who the audience is. As the sport grew it morphed from being focused on alums to instead just being focused on the general public. The general sports viewing public doesn’t give a shit if Oregon State or Wazzu (or honestly us either) is nuked into irrelevance by the rules. They are just happy to watch Ohio State play Alabama in round 1 of a ten round playoff. Because the audience shifted like that, so did the business and alas here we are.

Expand full comment

I think 100% different.

In the case of recruiting violations, the effect on the game is indirect. The actual football game is unchanged but one team maybe has better ability to attract talent.

In the case of doping or in game cheating, the effect is direct. One athlete/team actually performs better than the same athlete/team would otherwise because the transgression. This creates a feeling among spectators that the sport itself is illusory or illegitimate, and therefore can erode fan interest significantly. Guardians of various sport leagues really need to bring the hammer down on this stuff, and cannot afford to ever change.

Camel

If I remember correctly, there was an option to ride camels and elephants at Marine World when they were at the old Redwood Shores location. Or was it the old SF zoo? I can't quite remember. Either way, I remember that the elephants were more popular so I rode the camel. The camels and elephants went in a well-worn path and they were clearly depressed/broken animals. Even as a small child - perhaps only 5 years old - thinking that it was undeniably grim and sad for the animals.
