TODAY IN COVID

Expand full comment

Mrs Slug is feeling weak and exhausted; "feeling like I've been run over by a truck" is how she puts it. Today is Day 7 seeing as how symptoms started last Tuesday.

Kaiser advises that the worst should be over and done with by Friday. I fear that I am next.

Both of us have been vaccinated and boosted twice.

Yippee.

It was a blowout election. The press makes it sound close - it really wasn't. He won by 17 points. For comparison, Le Pen's 41% is the same as Mondale got when he got famously routed by Reagan in 1984.

Also, worth pointing out that Macron's approval rating going into the election isn't any better than Biden's now.

1-2 finish for Red Bull and a rough, 6-DNF finish for Ferrari at Imola

https://www.skysports.com/f1/news/30778/12597922/emilia-romagna-gp-max-verstappen-wins-in-imola-as-charles-leclerc-crashes-to-drop-points

Verstappen produced a faultless display from pole position on a drying track to complete a much-needed perfect weekend after winning the Sprint, and led a Red Bull one-two from team-mate Sergio Perez.

Leclerc, who dropped from second to fourth at the start, hit a barrier as he attempted to chase Perez with 10 laps remaining, eventually finishing sixth after being forced to pit for a new front wing.

Leclerc's error enabled Lando Norris to score a surprise podium for McLaren, with the incident capping a hugely disappointing home race for Ferrari, who saw Carlos Sainz retire on the first lap after a collision with Norris' team-mate Daniel Ricciardo.

Nikola Jokić refuses to let Nuggets get swept, leads them to Game 4 win over Warriors

https://www.goldenstateofmind.com/2022/4/24/23040096/warriors-nuggets-news-game-four-recap-stephen-curry-klay-thompson-nikola-jokic

The Golden State Warriors could not finish off the Denver Nuggets on Sunday, falling 126-121 on Denver’s home floor. The Nuggets led for nearly all of regulation, but a strong second-half push briefly gave the Dubs an opportunity to complete the sweep. But, ultimately, they fell just short.

Nikola Jokić finally was able to carry the Nuggets to victory. He scored 18 first-quarter points and finished with 37 points, 8 rebounds, and 6 assists. Draymond Green and Jonathan Kuminga were the only Dubs defenders who had any semblance of success slowing down the reigning MVP.

The Warriors' offense was abysmal in the first quarter. Golden State shot just 30.8% from the field and only had two trips to the free-throw line. Klay Thompson led the team with eight first-quarter points but was forced to the bench after picking up some quick fouls. Yet, the Nuggets only led 26-21 because none of their secondary scorers found a rhythm.

Expand full comment

Nuggets definitely got the benefit of the whistle in this one, but as the road team you kind of have to expect that. Good on Denver for not rolling over.

Expand full comment

Turnovers and fouls for GSW has been their Achilles heel all season, if they keep them in check even a slow start won't do them in. This was also the first time Klay got to the foul line in this series, which although is not a barometer for winning or losing, was just a surprising stat for me. Hoping they close it out on Wednesday to get some rest before facing the winner of Mem/Min which is shaping up to be a really competitive series.

Suns and Pels tied at 2-2 is also pretty surprising given how they've played when missing one of their stars. If by some miracle the Pels pull out the series win I think it would be a bigger upset than the We Believe Warriors over the Mavs.

Game #17: A’s shut out Rangers to salvage series finale

https://www.athleticsnation.com/2022/4/24/23040293/game-17-oakland-as-texas-rangers-score-result

The Oakland A’s lineup hasn’t scored a lot of runs lately, but they didn’t need many on Sunday.

The pitching staff shut out the Texas Rangers, leading the A’s to a 2-0 victory in their series finale at the Coliseum. Oakland avoided a sweep at the hands of an AL West division rival, and clinched a winning homestand.

Entering today, the A’s had only scored one run through the first two games of this series against the Rangers, and they’d only totaled 14 runs through six games at the Coliseum. That trend continued, as all they got in this contest was a two-run homer from Stephen Piscotty, but it turned out to be enough thanks to a brilliant pitching performance.

Expand full comment

I think the A's will finish at about .500 this year.

Expand full comment

I think you're right, and the fact that the A's are usually competitive on a shoestring budget is both awesome and infuriating. Just imagine if John Fisher wasn't the world's biggest piece of shit and they actually gave that front office a little bit to work with.

Giants break a lot of unwritten rules, complete sweep of Nationals 12-3

https://www.mccoveychronicles.com/2022/4/24/23040200/mlb-recap-scores-san-francisco-giants-washington-nationals-joc-pederson-logan-webb

After dropping three of four to the New York Mets in their last series, the San Francisco Giants roared back in this three-game series against the Washington Nationals, winning all three games by a combined score of 24-6. Along the way, there were angry comments from Nationals players and their manager, Dave Martinez, as the Giants refused to let their foot off the gas even as they retained leads deep into games. This year, the Giants’ philosophy has been “score until they make you stop,” which makes perfect sense for a major league sport—nobody told the Germans to stop scoring when they were up 3-0 on Brazil in the 2014 World Cup semifinals—but somehow this has become controversial. The Giants have shown no willingness to give in, though.

The game today began somewhat strangely; after two pitches, Lucius Fox (former Giants international signing who went to the Rays in the Matt Moore trade) threw up on the field and was taken out for illness—after the game, Martinez mentioned he’d been dealing with a stomach flu, so hopefully he heals up quickly. Joc Pederson saw that, however, and decided he wanted to get out of the infield as soon as possible, so hit a monster home run as the leadoff batter.

Dodgers flip script with 10-2 win over the Padres

https://www.truebluela.com/2022/4/24/23040058/dodgers-padres-recap-bellinger-freeman-kershaw-sunday-win

The Dodgers had not faced many left-handed pitchers so far this season but when they did, they were hitting a collective .194/.282/.255 and their .537 OPS was tied with Arizona for 28th in the majors.

With left-hander Sean Manaea as their opposing pitcher on Sunday, it did not appear that their woes would end today but the Dodgers were able to knock out Manaea in the fifth inning and cruise to an easy like Sunday afternoon 10-2 win over the Padres at Petco Park.

Clayton Kershaw won his third game of the season and while he was not dominant, he did collect three strikeouts in his five innings of work. That left him four short of taking the Dodger franchise lead. That will have to wait for another day, possibly this coming Saturday at Dodger Stadium against the Detroit Tigers.
