We lost our 15yr old pup on Monday, thankfully she died comfortably in our backyard on her favorite bed in the sun with both of us at her side. She even held on long enough for my wife to rush home early from work to say goodbye, she passed within 20min of her getting home.
Very odd and quick ending, she had some GI issues Sunday night and went to the ER vet at 9pm, released at 1:30am after having stable vitals, near perfect bloodwork and a clear x-ray and ultrasound. Although a bit weak in the morning seemed much better and then quickly declined around noon, passing around 3pm.
We had her for 14yrs and she was the perfect dog loving everyone she met and always in a good mood. The house is much quieter now as our 11yr old little dog is more like a house cat. Very happy we had such a long journey with her, but it's been a rough couple of days around here. RIP sweet Edie
Missouri's law will take effect tomorrow that arms the state government to go after doctors who provide gender-affirming care + require those who want to undergo treatment will be required to screened for autism and social media addiction (ie, being transgender is a learned process and or a mental illness). People are going to die because of these fucked up laws.
It’s kind of wild because it runs counter to the usual GOP position as being business friendly. Randomly screwing with the state’s largest private employer over invented social issues is bananas in light of the party’s history
my take is that either party doesnt stand for principles anymore. it is more about "us vs them" and we will take whatever we can get and oppose them as much as possible so they cant take credit for anything positive.
I think it’s almost exclusively tribalism for GOP now. D’s have that as well, but not to the same degree. Ultimately most D positions are still grounded in reality. The GOP is I think now just living in a fantasy world of their own creation, with this DeSantis - Disney spat being perhaps the best illustration of this.
We have a Mayflower and Koi Palace and a Grand Cafe opened by the people who own Gum Kuo in Oakland nearby, but there's this weird Mainland Chinese noodle spot by the Ranch 99. No not that Ranch 99, not that Ranch 99, the NEW one (yes there are 3 within 10 minutes drive) that was really really good.
Which is the new one? It must be the one by the outlets. I think I've eaten at one of the places in the food court by the 99 there. Can't remember which place it was though.
Mrs Slug loves Shan Dong in Oakland's Chinatown, near to my workplace. I can get up from my chair, look out the wind and see the roof of the building in which it is located. As Cugel says, though, there are other good places to eat Chinese in Oakland. Not sure about the wider East Bay, though.
Tapei Cafe. Worn out tables, the specials are all written in Chinese, the owner remembers my favorites, and more often than not - it's 100% Asians dining in. The food is fantastic.
We went to meizhou dongpo in Irvine the other day and the fried rice was good. Everything tasted really good except for the crab which cost me $1100. That one dish was more of expensive than all the rest of food combined (party of 17)
Our fave is Capital on Clay Street in Chinatown. Went there the other day - still great! My wife grew up in the kitchen of her parents’ Chinese restaurant in Chicago, and it is her fave here as well. (Well that and San Tung in the Inner Sunset)
It's easy to ignore Chinese food around here because there are so many different countries' foods to choose from, but a particular favorite is A&J Restaurant in Rockville MD, which is a super-low-key family place that serves northern Chinese dishes and dim sum. A local restauranteur named Peter Chang has a couple of places near our house that are good. And I like China Jade, which is the sort of place where the menu has 2 sides - what you're used to getting in an American Chinese restaurant, and dishes more like grandma used to make.
I suspect there's a whole host of places in Virginia suburbs that are equally good or better, but I just can't be bothered to drive more than 15 minutes to get dinner.
Worked in thoroughbred horse racing and bought a house near the track. Plus, Newellbany and I worked summers up in the Adirondacks and Lake George and I loved the area…until, that is, I moved back with the former Mrs. Jimmy C…now, the 518 is dead to me. ;-)
it is possible that Flushing Chinatown is distance-wise closer, but it is a pain to cross bridge and fight traffic. this place has excellent dim sum on weekends and really good seafood and Chinese standards by night.
they also have a good rendition of salted fish and chicken fried rice, which is a personal favorite because of hanging out w/ HAG too much.
I make a bit of an effort to make sure that I've finished the year's worth of NYT crossword puzzles by December 31st (sometimes I'll have a stretch when I'm not doing them so I have to get caught up)
I finally made it up to the new Chitwood cabin near the Lair and it’s in the 70’s. The area looks like a mess because of the brutal winter, but the weather is delightful.
After an early, warm spring we're switched to a cooler period. Highs below average in the 60s and lows in the 50s. Not too bad and some needed rain from time to time.

BERKELEY – The 29th-ranked California men's tennis team faces a familiar foe on Thursday to start its Pac-12 Championship run, as the fifth-seeded Golden Bears meet fourth-seeded and 23rd-ranked Stanford in a quarterfinal at 9 a.m. PDT at Libbey Park in Ojai. The winner of the conference tournament earns the Pac-12's automatic berth into the NCAA Championship.
Cal has an overall record of 12-9, while the Cardinal is 13-9. The rivals each had a 4-4 Pac-12 record during the regular season, with Stanford edging the Bears for the higher seed in the Pac-12 Championship due to its conference win over Cal.
STANFORD – The Cal baseball team led for most of the contest thanks to the home run ball. However, in the bottom of the ninth inning, it was a two-run home run from Stanford's Braden Montgomery that tied the game up. The eighth-ranked Cardinal completed the comeback on an RBI single by Jake Sapien to win 6-5 on Tuesday night at Klein Field at the Sunken Diamond.
BERKELEY – The 26th-ranked California women's tennis team opens the Pac-12 Championship in the quarterfinal round on Thursday at 3 p.m. PDT in Ojai, where the Golden Bears face the winner of Wednesday's Oregon-Colorado match. Cal finished second in the conference standings with a 7-3 record to claim the No. 2 seed in the conference tournament, while 58th-ranked Oregon is the No. 7 seed and 63rd-ranked Colorado is seeded 10th. BERKELEY – California men's golfer Sampson Zheng was selected on Tuesday to play in the 2023 Arnold Palmer Cup matches at Laurel Valley Golf Club outside of Ligonier, Pennsylvania on June 8-10. The prestigious Ryder Cup-style competition, in its 27th year, features the top men's and women's collegiate golfers from the United States versus their international counterparts.
Zheng, who will play for the international team, finished fifth in the final international men's rankings that were released by the Palmer Cup committee on Tuesday. The top six golfers from the final ranking for both the United States and the international side were automatically selected for their respective teams. Both teams feature 12 golfers apiece, with the remainder of the rosters selected by the Palmer Cup committee. The full Palmer Cup rosters can be viewed at arnoldpalmercup.com.
Looks like Cal got their third QB. The weird thing is that he's redshirt freshman, but already got his undergraduate degree last December. Three to play 3.
Game 5 tonight at 7pm for the Dubs in what amounts to an almost must win for both teams. Fox has broken index finger tip on his shooting hand, he plans on playing with a splint.
i guess no is surprised that they are doing well w/ James and AD both back in the mix. no one wants to face them either. even more so than the Warriors.
would it be Lakers @ Warriors in next round if they were both to win? a much bigger IF w/ Warriors i would still say.
All eyes were on Mason Miller once again in his second major league start, just the twelfth of his career. Once again, he showed about what you’d expect for a 24-year-old rookie with just 33 professional innings under his belt.
Miller utilized his flaming, nasty stuff alongside his tight command to strike out 6 batters and walk just one. Two of those six just happened to be a pair of the best hitters in the world: Shohei Ohtani and Mike Trout.
For all of baseball’s magic, grace, beauty, and even drama, it often lacks the all-or-nothing late-game theatrics that other sports have.
Anyone who paired the San Francisco Giants Tuesday night game against the St. Louis Cardinals with some NBA Playoffs action was reminded of how often basketball gives us an all-or-nothing situation: make a shot and you win; miss a shot and you lose. Football does the same, with so many games coming down to a final play: score and it’s over; don’t score and it’s also over.
Giants invest $25M in two completely BLAH SP’s and 3 weeks into the season, it’s clear they trust neither of them as anything more than low leverage long relievers.
Just a real bang up job by the front office…Sabol completely bails them out.
One can look for extra meaning in individual wins over the course of a regular season, though more often than not there’s nothing to be found. Nevertheless, this wasn’t your ordinary 8-7 win for the Dodgers over the Pirates at PNC Park.
The Dodgers entered Tuesday’s game without their two hottest hitters, in Max Muncy and J.D. Martinez, the former on paternity leave, and the latter day-to-day with a small back issue. Not to mention Will Smith, who was ruled out for this road trip still recovering from a concussion.

The chinese menu and 100% asians. Therefore one of the best.
