We lost our 15yr old pup on Monday, thankfully she died comfortably in our backyard on her favorite bed in the sun with both of us at her side. She even held on long enough for my wife to rush home early from work to say goodbye, she passed within 20min of her getting home.

Very odd and quick ending, she had some GI issues Sunday night and went to the ER vet at 9pm, released at 1:30am after having stable vitals, near perfect bloodwork and a clear x-ray and ultrasound. Although a bit weak in the morning seemed much better and then quickly declined around noon, passing around 3pm.

We had her for 14yrs and she was the perfect dog loving everyone she met and always in a good mood. The house is much quieter now as our 11yr old little dog is more like a house cat. Very happy we had such a long journey with her, but it's been a rough couple of days around here. RIP sweet Edie

Missouri's law will take effect tomorrow that arms the state government to go after doctors who provide gender-affirming care + require those who want to undergo treatment will be required to screened for autism and social media addiction (ie, being transgender is a learned process and or a mental illness). People are going to die because of these fucked up laws.

It’s kind of wild because it runs counter to the usual GOP position as being business friendly. Randomly screwing with the state’s largest private employer over invented social issues is bananas in light of the party’s history

Expand full comment

my take is that either party doesnt stand for principles anymore. it is more about "us vs them" and we will take whatever we can get and oppose them as much as possible so they cant take credit for anything positive.

Expand full comment

I think it’s almost exclusively tribalism for GOP now. D’s have that as well, but not to the same degree. Ultimately most D positions are still grounded in reality. The GOP is I think now just living in a fantasy world of their own creation, with this DeSantis - Disney spat being perhaps the best illustration of this.

Best Chinese food in your area

Expand full comment

We have a Mayflower and Koi Palace and a Grand Cafe opened by the people who own Gum Kuo in Oakland nearby, but there's this weird Mainland Chinese noodle spot by the Ranch 99. No not that Ranch 99, not that Ranch 99, the NEW one (yes there are 3 within 10 minutes drive) that was really really good.

Which is the new one? It must be the one by the outlets. I think I've eaten at one of the places in the food court by the 99 there. Can't remember which place it was though.

Our fave is Capital on Clay Street in Chinatown. Went there the other day - still great! My wife grew up in the kitchen of her parents’ Chinese restaurant in Chicago, and it is her fave here as well. (Well that and San Tung in the Inner Sunset)

It's easy to ignore Chinese food around here because there are so many different countries' foods to choose from, but a particular favorite is A&J Restaurant in Rockville MD, which is a super-low-key family place that serves northern Chinese dishes and dim sum. A local restauranteur named Peter Chang has a couple of places near our house that are good. And I like China Jade, which is the sort of place where the menu has 2 sides - what you're used to getting in an American Chinese restaurant, and dishes more like grandma used to make.

I suspect there's a whole host of places in Virginia suburbs that are equally good or better, but I just can't be bothered to drive more than 15 minutes to get dinner.

The eighth-ranked Cardinal completed the comeback on an RBI single by Jake Sapien to win 6-5 on Tuesday night at Klein Field at the Sunken Diamond.

All eyes were on Mason Miller once again in his second major league start, just the twelfth of his career. Once again, he showed about what you’d expect for a 24-year-old rookie with just 33 professional innings under his belt.

Miller utilized his flaming, nasty stuff alongside his tight command to strike out 6 batters and walk just one. Two of those six just happened to be a pair of the best hitters in the world: Shohei Ohtani and Mike Trout.

BLAKE SABOL

https://www.mccoveychronicles.com/2023/4/25/23698526/giants-blake-sabol-cardinals-recap-walk-off

For all of baseball’s magic, grace, beauty, and even drama, it often lacks the all-or-nothing late-game theatrics that other sports have.

Anyone who paired the San Francisco Giants Tuesday night game against the St. Louis Cardinals with some NBA Playoffs action was reminded of how often basketball gives us an all-or-nothing situation: make a shot and you win; miss a shot and you lose. Football does the same, with so many games coming down to a final play: score and it’s over; don’t score and it’s also over.

https://www.truebluela.com/2023/4/25/23698363/chris-taylor-home-run-dodgers-bullpen-comeback-pirates

One can look for extra meaning in individual wins over the course of a regular season, though more often than not there’s nothing to be found. Nevertheless, this wasn’t your ordinary 8-7 win for the Dodgers over the Pirates at PNC Park.

The Dodgers entered Tuesday’s game without their two hottest hitters, in Max Muncy and J.D. Martinez, the former on paternity leave, and the latter day-to-day with a small back issue. Not to mention Will Smith, who was ruled out for this road trip still recovering from a concussion.
