KC Chiefs

i am surprised that with the discussion that lead to the Washington Commanders changing mascots from Redskins, that the Chiefs arent under similar scrutiny?

i appreciate that "redskins" is more obviously racist, but still ..

Expand full comment

KC has tried and failed miserably at trying to eliminate the offensive chant at games. I believe they were able to stop fans from wearing head dresses finally. I believe Chiefs aren’t facing similar scrutiny due to “Chief” being a position within the tribe?

Expand full comment

Also, the word "chief" has entered the English language and is used frequently as a descriptor for positions in the workplace.

I despise the tomahawk chop whether it's used by the Braves fans or Chiefs fans. It's cultural appropriation at its know-nothingism worst.

Expand full comment

Exactly. Is it the same thing that keeps the Atlanta Braves from scrutiny that the Cleveland Indians could not escape?

Expand full comment

Kinda makes sense to me "Braves" & "Chiefs" aren't as bad, and Redskins was the worst name - Indians was the worst image however.

I agree, Redskins was the most offensive name. Indians had the most offensive mascot. They needed to be removed decades ago.

Braves isn't much better, even if the mascot isn't cartoonish. And "Chiefs" and the arrowhead logo is just skirting the issue.

we bought a LOT of kids play room furniture from Ikea that held up well enough and was cheap and disposable enough when we were thru with it.

my main complaint is that things like beds and lamps all require their custom sized sheets and bulbs. so you cant just replace it easily. perhaps that is part of their sales strategy to get you to come into the store to buy replacement bulbs and lingonberry jam and then buy other things as you get lost in their rats-maze of a store layout.

Vasa .. from picture above.

i have seen the Vasa 2-3 times. each time has been as interesting at the last. it is amazingly well restored and it and it is not that often you get to see a well preserved 17th century ship.

i think that the reason it was so well preserved is because the salt content of the Baltic Sea is lower than average (maybe)?

Expand full comment
author

I read somewhere that the Baltic sea is too cold for wood-eating nematodes that are common in warmer waters.

Expand full comment

that sounds reasonable. the sea freezes over more easily in that part of the world because of the lower salt content too. so maybe related?

from ChatGPT >

The Baltic Sea is a brackish sea, meaning that it has a lower salt content than most oceans, and this lower salinity makes it difficult for organisms like shipworms to survive

Expand full comment

this too like you said ..

In addition, the cold water and lack of oxygen in the deeper parts of the Baltic Sea create an environment that is hostile to many organisms that would normally break down organic materials.

Home runs burn Julio Urías again as Dodgers drop another series

https://www.truebluela.com/2023/4/27/23700244/julio-urias-home-runs-dodgers-stolen-bases-allowed-pirates-recap

Julio Urías had a second straight clunker, and the Dodgers as currently constructed aren’t good enough to overcome when their ace isn’t pitching well. Los Angeles is back at .500 for the 10th time in 13 opportunities this season, dropping the series finale 6-2 to the Pirates at PNC Park in Pittsburgh on Thursday afternoon.

The game was close through five innings, with a big first inning for both teams fueled a 3-2 contest to that point. But Urías, who hadn’t allowed a hit since the first inning, walked Andrew McCutchen with one out in the sixth before allowing home runs to Connor Joe and Rodolfo Castro to break the game open.

I didn’t like those picks m at all. I feel like they could have gotten that RB and LB in the 2nd or 3rd.

Expand full comment

dead on. Just wasted the value of those 2 picks. They have a ton of picks so I guess maybe their looking at the volume to produce the quality they need? Something most peeps dont think about though...1st rounders have that money guaranteed for 4 years and the team has the all important 5 year option. How many RBs have their 5th year option picked up? Very very few in the past decade or so. Thats why QBs get picked so much in the 1st...cheap QB who hits and you have him cheap for 5 years. You can go get an RB or ILB anywhere anytime... just brutal strategy

Expand full comment

Campbell was at least 30 picks too early and might have been a 3rd rounder. The RB is nice but not a position of need and you desperately need CBs. They could get an excellent back in later rounds to complement what they have while shoring up an atrocious pass defense. Just awful

The majority feel-good series against the St. Louis Cardinals ended on a sour note for our San Francisco Giants with a 6-0 loss that snapped a 5-game rebranding, spirit-lifting win streak and soured a solid 6.2 innings pitched, 2 run, 7 strikeout day from Logan Webb.

The problem, as always, is the other team gets to have a pitcher too, and St. Louis’s Miles Mikolas was excellent, pulled with one-out in the 7th with the bases empty and no runs allowed.
